ABUS smoke alarm buying guide

Updated: 20 October 2026

You have four ABUS smoke alarms open on amazon.co.uk and they do not do the same job. One has cells you change, one is a sealed unit with a long and unhappy review file, one is a flatter sealed alarm with a short review file, and one only talks to your phone if you already own a hub. This ABUS smoke alarm buying guide puts the battery, the room and the interlink limit ahead of the stars, so you can leave with a shortlist of one. Shelf prices on 19 October 2026 were about £11.28, about £20.23, about £23.65 and about £52.17. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. The cards live on the [ABUS smoke alarm comparison](/hub/fire-protection/abus-smoke-alarm).

What you are actually choosing

These listings are battery optical smoke alarms for a hall, a landing or a bedroom. They are not heat alarms, they are not carbon monoxide alarms, and they are not an interlinked system. If you put any of them in a kitchen, steam and cooking smoke are the wrong test of the sensor, and a kitchen in a Scottish or Northern Irish let is meant to have a heat alarm instead. The Prefira Slim is the sealed Prefira with a Q-Label claim and an adhesive pad plus a magnet. An English let can use a stand-alone battery alarm on each living storey. A Scottish home, a rented home in Wales, and a private let in Northern Ireland need a system these four alarms do not complete. That legal split is on the landlord smoke alarm rules page.

Sealed, replaceable, or a phone alert

A sealed cell matches the GOV.UK preference for battery alarms in English lets, and it matches the Fire Kills line that a long-life sealed alarm is the usual better option for most people. In this set that shape is the RWM150 or the Prefira Slim. The RWM150 listing claims up to 10 years from a permanently installed 3 V lithium cell. The first 50 amazon.co.uk reviews are dominated by that cell failing early. You cannot swap the cell. A chirp means a new alarm. The Slim also claims a sealed life of up to 10 years, but 26 reviews cannot prove a decade. A replaceable cell is the Prefira 5 and the Prefira Smart. ABUS describes two AAA cells and a life of up to five years for the Prefira 5. The Smart adds Matter over Thread. Push alerts need a Thread Border Router that is not in the box. The phone message does not make any other smoke alarm in the house sound. If you do not already run Thread, skip the Smart.

Marks that are not UK law

Every listing in this set cites EN 14604, which is the product standard for smoke alarms. ABUS dates Prefira certification to EN 14604:2005/AC:2008. That mark tells you the alarm was built to a smoke-alarm standard. It does not tell you that one unit on a landing satisfies the fire-detection rules for your nation, and it is not a Kitemark. The Q-Label is a claim on the Prefira Slim, and ABUS says the related testing is certified by KRIWAN. It is not a UK legal requirement, and it is not evidence that the sealed cell has lasted 10 years in British homes. VdS 3131 is on the RWM150 listing, next to the German Stiftung Warentest grade of 1.9 from issue 01/2021. They do not cancel 3.7 stars from 1,421 amazon.co.uk reviews.

A shortlist without a winner

Second, sealed or replaceable. If you will not change cells, the Slim is the sealed Prefira, and the RWM150 is the sealed model you only keep after reading the battery reviews on the RWM150 or Prefira page. If you will change cells, the Prefira 5 is the alarm at about £11.28. Third, the ceiling. Screws only, in the Prefira 5 bullets, versus adhesive and magnet on the Slim and the Smart. The RWM150 listing does not itemise the fixings.

Common questions

What does the Q-Label change for a UK buyer?
On the Prefira Slim it is an extra product mark, with ABUS pointing at KRIWAN for the certification behind that claim. It does not change English, Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish law, and it is not a Kitemark.
Is the cheapest ABUS alarm the sealed 10-year one?
No. The cheapest listing in this set is the Prefira 5 at about £11.28, and its batteries are replaceable with a life of up to five years. The sealed claims sit on the RWM150 at about £20.23 and the Prefira Slim at about £23.65. Cheap and sealed are different rows here, so do not assume the lowest price has the cell you never change.
Do I need a hub for every ABUS smoke alarm?
No. Only the Prefira Smart uses Matter over Thread, and only that listing asks for a Thread Border Router. The Prefira 5, the Prefira Slim and the RWM150 have no smart-home claim in this comparison. Buying the Smart without the router leaves you with a replaceable-battery alarm at about £52.17 and no phone alerts.
Why is the RWM150 cheaper than the Slim but rated lower?
The RWM150 is about £20.23 and 3.7 from 1,421 reviews. The Slim is about £23.65 and 4.2 from 26 reviews. The larger file is full of early sealed-cell failures. The smaller file has not had time to show a decade of ownership. A lower price next to a lower star line is the battery pattern, not a quieter alarm or a bigger room rating.
Will four separate alarms count as interlinked?
No. Interlink means one alarm sets the others off. Fitting four of these, even four Prefira Smart units, does not create that link. The Smart can message a phone if a Thread Border Router is present. The phone message is not the landing alarm sounding because the hall alarm did. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland care about that difference.
