How to fit an ABUS smoke alarm

Updated: 20 October 2026

The alarm is on the kitchen table and the ceiling is still bare. You need a place it can hear smoke from the rooms people actually sleep and sit in, a fixing that matches the box you bought, and a test you will still do in March. This is how to fit an ABUS smoke alarm from the four listings in our [ABUS smoke alarm comparison](/hub/fire-protection/abus-smoke-alarm): the Prefira 5, the Prefira Slim, the Prefira Smart and the RWM150. Products Compared did not fit these on a ceiling for a lab score. If you have not chosen the battery type yet, start with the [ABUS smoke alarm buying guide](/hub/fire-protection/abus-smoke-alarm/sub/abus-smoke-alarm-buying-guide). Where it goes

Put it on the ceiling of the hall or the landing, not on a picture rail and not above the cooker. Keep about 30 cm clear of walls and of light fittings. Cornwall states at least 30 cm from a wall or a light, and Scottish Fire and Rescue uses the same clearance. Do not put these optical alarms in a kitchen or a bathroom. Steam sets them off, and a kitchen that needs an alarm needs a heat alarm instead. That heat alarm, and the question of whether your nation requires it, is on the landlord smoke alarm rules page. If the home is in Scotland, or it is a rented home in Wales, or a private let in Northern Ireland, fitting one of these boxes on the landing does not finish the job. Those homes need interlink, and some of them need mains power.

How these ABUS alarms fix to the ceiling

The fixing is printed on the listing, and the four listings do not match. The Prefira 5 bullets include screws and wall plugs. They do not include an adhesive pad. If you cannot drill, that model is the wrong box, however attractive the shelf price was. The Prefira Slim and the Prefira Smart include an adhesive pad and a magnetic mount as well as screws. The RWM150 listing does not itemise screws, a pad or a magnet in the captured bullets. Do not buy the RWM150 on the assumption the amazon text promised a stick-on mount. Follow what is actually in the bag, and stop if the ceiling is above a stair where a ladder feels unsafe.

How often to test and when to replace

Press the test button at least once a month. That is the Fire Kills interval, and it is the one to treat as the minimum. On the Prefira Slim and the RWM150 the cell is sealed. A chirp on those models means the unit is at the end of its life, not that you hunt for a drawer of batteries. Replace the whole alarm around 10 years even if it still seems quiet. Fire Kills uses that horizon. The RWM150’s amazon reviews are full of sealed cells that chirped much earlier than that, from about 10 months to about four years. If yours does that, replace it.

When to stop and get help

Stop if the ceiling is too high for a household step, if you cannot tell what the plaster will hold, or if the job is really a mains system under BS 5839-6. New English houses are guided towards a Grade D2, Category LD3 mains layout, which these battery alarms are not. If the alarm sounds and you cannot see a cause you understand, such as visible toast or steam, get everyone out and call 999. A chirp every 40 seconds on a sealed RWM150 is a failing cell, not a fire. If you are unsure which beep you are hearing, leave and call 999.

Common questions

Should the first alarm go in the hallway or the bedroom?
Fit the hall or landing first, on the ceiling, because that is the route between the rooms you use in the day and the rooms you sleep in. Add a bedroom alarm if you want one closer to the bed. A bedroom unit on its own, with a silent hall, is the weaker layout.
Can it go in the kitchen?
No. These are optical smoke alarms, and kitchens throw up steam and cooking smoke. Fire Kills says not to fit a smoke alarm in the kitchen or the bathroom. Where a kitchen needs detection, the device is a heat alarm, and in several UK nations that heat alarm also has to be linked to the smoke alarms. None of these four ABUS boxes is that heat alarm.
Do I drill, or can I use the adhesive pad?
The Prefira Slim and the Prefira Smart include a pad and a magnetic mount as well as screws. The Prefira 5 listing shows screws and wall plugs, not a pad. The RWM150 bullets do not list the fixing, so use what is in that box rather than a magnet you saw mentioned in a review. A pad needs a clean, sound painted surface. Flaking paint is a reason to screw, or to stop.
Is the test monthly or weekly?
At least monthly, which is the Fire Kills minimum and close to the four-week interval ABUS gives for the RWM150. Weekly is what Cornwall and Scottish Fire and Rescue ask for, and it is the better habit if you will keep it. Use the test button. Do not remove a battery to prove the alarm can go quiet.
What if a sealed alarm chirps?
On the Prefira Slim and the RWM150 you cannot fit a new cell. The chirp means replace the alarm. RWM150 owners report that happening from under a year to about four years, inside the 10-year claim. On the Prefira 5 and the Prefira Smart the cells are replaceable. Fit the new cells, press test, and only then decide the alarm itself has failed.
