Measuring and marking tools

Updated: October 2026Hub page

Measuring and marking tools are what you use to set out a room, a fence, a shelf or a cut in a UK workshop. The cards cover spirit levels and lasers, tapes, rules and wheels, calipers and micrometers, and the squares, gauges and pencils that put a line on timber or a wall.

Choose the card that matches the job. A bubble on a short sole, a hose that runs around a corner, a wheel on a path and a jaw on a small part are different tools. The listing details stay on each comparison, so this page can stay put when a listing changes.

Common questions about measuring and marking tools

What does this hub cover?
Measuring and marking tools on this hub are the instruments you use to find a length, a level or a line in a UK home or workshop. The comparisons split spirit levels, lasers and hose levels, tapes, folding rules and measuring wheels, calipers and micrometers, and the squares, gauges and pencils that mark timber or a wall. Each card is one product type. Open that comparison for the current amazon.co.uk listings. There is no laboratory test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
How do you choose a spirit level?
Match the sole to the span. A short level reports only the length under the vial, so a picture or a socket is a different job from a door or a stud. A set gives you more than one length. A magnetic level is for steel and iron. A post level straps to a fence post. A laser throws a line, and a hose level carries a water surface around a corner. Read the length, the stated tolerance and whether you can reverse the tool on the comparison.
When is a tape the wrong measure?
A 5 m tape is the usual pocket measure for a room. A folding rule or a measuring stick stays stiff, which helps when you need a straight edge as well as a scale. A measuring wheel is for a path, a fence run or rough ground, where a tape sags or snags. None of these replaces a caliper on a small part. Pick the card for the distance and the surface, then read the units and the hook or the counter on that page.
What is the difference between a caliper and a micrometer?
A caliper spans inside, outside and often depth on one tool, as a digital display, a vernier scale or a dial. An outside micrometer is for an external size over a short range, and it needs a zero check. A depth gauge is for how far a hole or a step goes, not for the width of a part. If the listing does not state the range or the resolution, that gap stays on the comparison.
Which tool marks a line?
A carpenter's pencil marks timber you will cut. A chalk line snaps a long straight mark. A marking gauge runs a line parallel to an edge. A combination square and a speed square set a right angle and a length on the blade. A sliding bevel copies an angle that is not square, such as a stair or a skirting. A contour gauge copies a shape. Use the card that matches the mark, not the word square on its own.
Should you buy metric or dual scales?
UK site work is usually metric, in millimetres. Some listings still print inches, or both. A dual tape is usable if you know which edge you are reading. A speed square or a dial caliper sold in inches is awkward when the drawing is in millimetres. The comparison says which scales the listing prints. Do not assume a metric scale from the product type alone.
How were these comparisons made?
Each comparison uses amazon.co.uk listings: the printed specification, the shelf price in GBP and the stored review notes. Peter F. is the editor for DIY & tools. There is no laboratory test and no invented tolerance. A star rating is not treated as proof that a vial or a jaw is true. If a length, a class or a scale is missing from the listing, the page leaves that gap.
Where should you start?
Start with the job. A shelf or a door needs a spirit level of the right length. A room needs a tape. A small part needs a caliper or a micrometer. A long mark on a floor needs a chalk line. An angle that is not 90 degrees needs a bevel or an angle finder. Open that card, then the buying guide under it if you want the trade-off before the table.
