Digital caliper buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have already decided you want a screen rather than a vernier scale, and the amazon.co.uk shelf looks like one product. It is not. On 19 October 2026 a plastic Acual at £5.89 stated 0.2 mm, while a stainless Kynup 170-2 at £21.99 stated ±0.02 mm. This digital caliper buying guide puts the decision in order: the length you measure, the accuracy line you can live with, whether the beam flexes, then the battery and any splash claim. Peter F. read twelve amazon.co.uk listings and did not calibrate any tool. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Start with the length you actually measure

Most UK jobs for a digital caliper are shorter than 150 mm. MQS calls 150 mm the popular workshop length, and six inches is about 152 mm, which is why so many listings print both. A hinge or a printed bracket usually fits. A longer beam adds weight, not a better reading. Bryze at £27.99 is the only row that claims more reach. The title says 200 mm, and the same bullet also prints 0–6 inch / 0–200 mm, so treat it as an unresolved label until the live page states one range. A Mitutoyo Absolute 150 mm was £112.28 on 20 October 2026. That price is the exit from this shelf.

Read the accuracy line before the star rating

The twelve listings fall into two clusters, and the stars do not mark the boundary. From £5.89 to £6.99, Acual, Generic, EVRU, and Adoric state about ±0.2 mm, with 0.1 mm resolution. From £16.99 to £21.99 the other rows mostly claim a 0.01 mm step and about ±0.02 mm or ±0.03 mm. Cutwel calls that a typical workshop claim. It is still a claim, not a UKAS certificate. Adoric and Kynup 170-2 are both 4.5 stars, with different stated errors. If the bullet and the specification disagree, as on HARDELL and Preciva, keep both numbers. Do not treat 0.01 inch and 0.2 mm as one tolerance: 0.01 inch is 0.254 mm. How a claim differs from a certificate is on the digital caliper accuracy page.

A stiff beam beats a finer digit

If the beam bends, a fine step can still be wrong. Stainless steel holds a reading better than plastic or thin carbon fibre. EVRU’s bullets say to choose stainless for stiffness, and UK reviews on that £6.79 row say flex changes the size. Acual is openly plastic, model name Plastique, at 70 g. The Generic row at £6.45 says stainless in the title and carbon fibre in the specification. Weight is a clue, not a test: Adoric 68 g, Preciva 290 g, Kynup 170-2 399 g. Preciva’s bullets say hardened stainless steel and ABS, while the material field only says Black. A battery-free scale is the vernier versus digital caliper choice.

Power and splash are the last filters

A low cell makes the numbers wander. A UK note on Kynup 170-2 says a low battery made the reading much worse. Adoric, HARDELL, and Kynup KY-21S name LR44. Ueznirn names a CR2032. Acual wakes when the slider moves, which can flatten a cell in a drawer. HARDELL and KY-21S claim a full off button. Auto-off is not that switch. PUIBERS puts USB-C in the title at £37.99, while the English bullets never mention a port. IP54, under IEC 60529, means limited dust and splashing water, not coolant. Ueznirn and Kynup 170-2 print the code. Ueznirn also says waterproof. Keep the code. A swallowed button cell is an A&E emergency. For a fit, choose a stainless row that prints 0.01 mm and, where you can, one accuracy figure.

Common questions

Is 150 mm enough?
For most DIY, hobby machining, and 3D-print checks, yes. MQS calls 150 mm the popular workshop length, and almost every row in this set is that size or a 6 inch equivalent of about 152 mm. Buy longer only when a part you already own will not fit between the jaws. Bryze’s 200 mm title also prints 0–6 inch in the same bullet, so it is not a clean longer option until the live page picks one range.
What accuracy should a DIY caliper claim?
If the job is a hinge, a shelf, or a rough blank, a stated ±0.2 mm is often enough, which is the sub-£7 cluster here, from £5.89 to £6.99. If the job is a sliding fit, Cutwel’s typical workshop claim is about ±0.02 mm with 0.01 mm resolution, the territory of the £16.99–£21.99 rows. That figure is still the seller’s line, not a test we ran, and household work rarely needs the £100-plus metrology shelf.
Stainless, carbon fibre, or plastic?
Choose stainless steel, or a clearly metal beam, when the reading has to stay still. Carbon fibre in this set, notably EVRU at £6.79, draws UK reviews about flex, and the listing itself points you to stainless if you want stiffness. Plastic is Acual, openly, for light jobs where a scratch matters more than a hundredth of a millimetre. The Generic title says stainless while the specification says carbon fibre, so that row does not answer the question.
Do I need IP54?
Only if the tool will see dust and splashes, and only on a listing that prints the code. In this set that is Ueznirn at £18.34 and Kynup 170-2 at £21.99. IP54 is not waterproof and not an IP67 washdown rating. A dry bench, a case, and a habit of wiping the jaws matter more for most home users than a code the budget rows never print.
Should I care about the battery?
Yes, because a dying cell moves the digits. LR44 and CR2032 are the cells this set actually names. A full off button, claimed on HARDELL and Kynup KY-21S, is what stops a nudged slider from draining the tool in a drawer. Auto-off helps, and it is not the same as an off switch. PUIBERS’ USB-C claim is in the title only, so the English bullets still describe a battery.
