Digital caliper accuracy

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have just closed the jaws on a printed pin or a jewellery finding, and the screen has settled on 12.34. It is tempting to treat that last digit as the size of the mistake. On the twelve amazon.co.uk listings in our [digital caliper](/hub/measuring-and-marking-tools/digital-caliper) comparison, digital caliper accuracy is not that digit. The step on the screen is the resolution, the tolerance in the listing is a separate claim, and a UKAS certificate is a third document that none of these twelve rows includes. Peter F. read those listings on 20 October 2026 and did not calibrate the tools. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Resolution is not the error

Resolution is the smallest change the display will show. Accuracy is the band the seller prints around the true size. A 0.01 mm step can still be wrong by more than one step. Cutwel’s about ±0.02 mm is a rule of thumb for the type, not a test of any ASIN here. Acual states 0.2 mm and 0.1 mm. Adoric states ±0.2 mm in both places, beside 0.1 mm / 0.01 inch, and 0.01 inch is 0.254 mm. Preciva, HARDELL, and both Kynup models advertise a 0.01 mm step. That figure is the resolution, not a certificate. Ueznirn states ±0.02 mm and prints no resolution.

The claim, and the listings that print two of them

A stated accuracy is a sentence on the amazon.co.uk page, not a UKAS report and not a measurement we made. Where the bullets and the specification disagree, keep both lines. HARDELL’s bullets print 0.03 mm and the specification prints ±0.02 mm. Preciva splits the same way. Bryze repeats that pair and also pairs 0–6 inch with 0–200 mm. Six inches is 152.4 mm, not 200 mm. Quoting only ±0.02 mm chooses the line the bullets contradict. A UK review found the Preciva jaws 0.06 mm apart. Ueznirn, Kynup KY-21S, and Kynup 170-2 print ±0.02 mm in both places. They remain a claim, and an outside-jaw figure does not automatically belong to the rod.

Outside zero does not prove depth

BS EN ISO 13385-1:2019 covers the design of these callipers. MSC separates contact error, E, on the outside faces from scale shift, S, on the inside faces, the depth rod, and the step. Closing the outside jaws and pressing zero does not certify the other faces. How to use a digital caliper is the button. This page is the limit of that button. There is no constant force, so a hard squeeze and a light squeeze differ. Reset the origin after a battery change, then confirm zero. A depth reading can still carry the shift on that face. The ±0.02 mm line on the Kynup 170-2 assumes you are on the face it describes. It is the top pick because the stainless lines match, not because a laboratory crowned it.

A check is not a calibration

Close the jaws, confirm zero, and measure one feature three times with the same grip. The National Physical Laboratory uses gauge blocks along the range. None of these twelve arrived with that check, and a kitchen rule is not a UKAS certificate. You want that calibration when an auditor, a safety-critical fit, or a report will rely on the number. For ordinary DIY, quote the listing’s claim and its conflicts. A UK review said the Kynup 170-2 reading collapsed on a low cell. Change the cell and reset zero before you blame the jaws. When an outside diameter must be tighter than a caliper’s usual band, use an outside micrometer. The other checks are in the digital caliper buying guide.

Common questions

Is ±0.02 mm a test result?
No. Where a listing in this set prints ±0.02 mm, that figure is the seller’s claim. Cutwel describes about ±0.02 mm as typical for a digital caliper, which is a rule of thumb for the type, not a laboratory result for Ueznirn, Kynup, or anyone else here. We did not calibrate these tools. A UKAS certificate would be a separate document, and none of the twelve listings includes one.
Does zeroing the outside jaws check the depth rod?
No. Under BS EN ISO 13385-1:2019, as MSC explains it for buyers, contact error on the outside faces is a different error from the scale shift on the inside faces, the depth rod, and the step. Closing the outside jaws and pressing zero sets one origin. It does not measure the depth rod against a known depth. If you need the rod for a hole, check that face on its own, or accept that the reading is unchecked.
How can I sanity-check a digital caliper at home?
Close the jaws and confirm zero. Measure one feature three times with the same grip, away from the jaw tips, and see whether the reading repeats. If you have a length you already trust, compare the caliper with it. That can show a gross fault, a bent beam, or a zero that will not hold. It does not replace gauge blocks along the range, and it does not produce a traceable calibration.
Do I need UKAS calibration?
You need a UKAS calibration when someone else will rely on the number: an audit, a safety-critical fit, or a figure in a report. For household checks and ordinary DIY, the printed claim is the limit you can stand behind, provided you quote the conflicts rather than the friendliest line. A UKAS laboratory can calibrate a caliper you already own. Buying one of these twelve listings does not include that service.
Why did the reading change when the battery was low?
A weak cell can move the reading before the screen goes blank. A UK review of the Kynup 170-2 said accuracy collapsed when the battery was low, which is one report rather than a test of every brand. Reset the origin after you fit a new cell, then close the jaws and confirm zero. If the display fades or jumps, change the cell before you adjust the part.
