Spirit level for DIY or trade

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are hanging kitchen wall units, or loading a level into a van. A spirit level for DIY or trade has to match the knocks it will take. At home, a light set that passes a flip test is enough for shelves, a kitchen and a shed base. On site you want a sole you cannot flex and a stated 0.5 mm/m. On steel, you want a magnet whose sole still sits flat. The [spirit level set comparison](/hub/measuring-and-marking-tools/spirit-level-set) lists the nine amazon.co.uk sets in pounds. A light set for shelves, a kitchen and a shed base

Silverline is about £25.40 for three aluminium lengths, with no accuracy on the listing, so prove the vial on the wall. URASISTO is about £35.99 for three pieces and about £56.99 for five, stated at 0.0005 inch/ft rather than 0.5 mm/m. OX Trade, about £39.99 and 1.5 kg, is the 600 mm and 1,200 mm pair with a milled base and 0.5 mm/m, on four reviews. Turn that 1,200 mm level end for end on a run of wall units. If the bubble agrees, the set is doing the home job. Unused lengths are on the which lengths page.

A sole you cannot flex when the level lives in a van

Bricklaying, door linings and studs need a sole that stays straight after a drop. If you can flex an open profile by hand, BuildWiz treats it as too soft, because a closed box resists twist better. That check is done in the shop, not in a laboratory. OX Pro, about £82.99, is a 66 mm by 30 mm box at 2.89 kg, fine-milled top and bottom, with silicone handles, PVC absorbers, 0.5 mm/m and a lifetime vial warranty. Firecore, about £69.99 and 2.11 kg, states a box beam, ribs, rubberised caps and handles, and ±0.5 mm/m, though the caps are not a drop rating.

Magnets for steel studs, not for inspecting a scaffold

You need a magnetic spirit level when steel studs, a lintel or a frame must hold it while both hands work. Timber shelves do not need one. A magnetic title does not put a magnet on every length, and the sole still has to sit flat. TOUGH MASTER names three magnetic levels, plus scaffold and metal framework. Firecore and URASISTO state a magnetic torpedo, not the longer pieces. OX Pro, OX Trade, Silverline, Milwaukee and AB Tools do not state magnets. A scaffold magnet holds the tool. It does not inspect ties, boards or guard rails. Profile and vials are on the spirit level set buying guide.

When a spirit level is the wrong tool

A true vial cannot prove a drainage fall, set out work you cannot check, or replace edge protection at height, so call a professional for those jobs. Do not stand on a level or lever a board with it, because that bends the sole. If the flip test fails, stop and do not bend the profile back. A new level that arrives bent is a satisfactory-quality point under section 9 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Indoors, keep a light set and flip-test it before you drill. If the level will live in a van or stick to steel, buy a box that states 0.5 mm/m, with magnets only where the listing names them. The nine sets are compared on the best spirit level sets page.

Common questions

Is a cheap set enough for shelves and a kitchen?
Yes, if it stays indoors and passes a flip test before you drill. Silverline at about £25.40 and URASISTO at about £35.99 or £56.99 are the light sets here. Silverline states no accuracy, and URASISTO states 0.0005 inch/ft rather than 0.5 mm/m. OX Trade at about £39.99 states 0.5 mm/m and a milled base, on four reviews.
What should change if the level will live in a van?
The sole and the stated accuracy should change. A van level is dropped and lent out, so you want a box you cannot flex and a stated 0.5 mm/m. Here that is OX Pro at about £82.99 and 2.89 kg, or Firecore at about £69.99 and 2.11 kg. Rubber caps are not a drop rating.
When do I need magnets?
You need magnets for steel studs, a lintel or a metal frame, when the level has to stay put while you fix. Timber shelves do not. TOUGH MASTER states three magnetic levels. Firecore and URASISTO limit that wording to the torpedo, and the other sets do not state magnets.
Does a shockproof cap mean the level can be dropped?
No. Caps on Firecore and absorbers on OX Pro are features on the listing, not a drop height. One TOUGH MASTER review said a long level survived a fall off a roof. That is one review, not a drop test, and other reviews say the vials disagreed.
What if UK reviews already mention a bent level?
Check the long piece before you mark. UK reviews mention bent long levels on AB Tools, and a Firecore set that disagreed with another instrument. That is a warning, not a counted failure rate. Stop if the sole is bent or the flip test fails, and do not force the profile straight.
Is a scaffold magnet a reason to inspect a scaffold?
No. A magnet holds the level on tube or a frame. It does not check ties, boards or guard rails. A title that names scaffold, as TOUGH MASTER does, does not make an inspection tool. If you are not competent to inspect a scaffold, leave it to someone who is.
