How to check a spirit level

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a spirit level set on the bench, and the next mark is a kitchen run or a shelf that has to look straight. A figure printed on the box does not tell you that this vial still agrees with itself. This is how to check a spirit level set before use: a spirit level flip test on the horizontal vial, then a plumb vial test, on every length. The [spirit level set comparison](/hub/measuring-and-marking-tools/spirit-level-set) sets out what the amazon.co.uk listings claim. If the bubble changes place when you turn the level around, return it rather than fitting units that all lean the same way.

Why you flip the level, not the bench

The worktop does not have to be perfectly level. You compare the spirit level with itself, not with a bench you already trust. Note the bubble, turn the same measuring edge on the same marks, and read again. A match means the tool agrees with itself. A mismatch means the vial changed, compared with that first reading. One reading hides a spirit level out of true, and on a kitchen every unit you set to that faulty bubble leans the same way. Look square down at the vial, or an angled glance will shift it. You should not stand on the level.

Check the horizontal vial

Put the level the right way up on a firm surface. Mark both ends and a point in line with the horizontal vial. Read the bubble from straight above. Turn it end for end and put the same edge back on those marks. Do not flip it upside down or slide it to a fresh patch of bench. Read again from the same viewpoint. The bubble should sit in the same place. If it differs, repeat both readings in case you missed the marks. The plumb vial is separate, so this pass does not clear it.

Check the plumb vial

Use a door frame or a flat wall, and the vial you read when the level stands on end. Mark the position, including a point in line with that vial. Note the bubble while you look straight at the glass. Bring the same edge back to the same marks the other way around. On a 1,200 mm level against a door lining, a bubble that was centred and then sits hard against a line has failed, even if the horizontal vial on that piece was fine. If the shift remains, stop using that piece for plumb.

Test every piece, then keep or return it

One vial does not clear the set. Some amazon.co.uk reviews of TOUGH MASTER sets found pieces level but not plumb, or the reverse, and only the smallest passed both. That is a review signal, not a lab result. Check every length on both vials. Length for a shelf or a run is on the which lengths page. A bent sole, or a level that rocks, has already failed. Do not mark from it. Leave a sealed vial alone and return the level if you cannot adjust it by an approved method. Site use is on the DIY or trade page. Replacements start on the buying guide. Common questions

Does the test surface have to be perfectly level?
No. You compare the spirit level with itself, so the bench or wall can be slightly out. It still has to be firm, and the sole must not rock, or the two passes disagree for a reason that is not the vial. Mark the ends and a point in line with the vial, then read, turn, and read again. Matching bubbles mean the surface has not failed the tool.
How do I check the plumb vial?
Hold the level on a door frame or a flat wall and use the plumb vial. Mark a point in line with the vial and note the bubble from straight on. Turn the level so the same edge comes back the other way. Side to side, swapping ends, and a 180 degree turn about the axis are one test. If the bubble leaves the centre and sits on a line, do not set a lining from that piece.
Do I have to test every level in the set?
Yes. One length can be true for level and not for plumb, and another can fail the other way. Some TOUGH MASTER reviews described that split, and they are buyer comments rather than a lab test of your box. Flip each length, on both vials, before you fit anything. A short level that passes does not clear a long one you have not turned around.
Can I adjust a spirit level vial?
Not on these sets. None of the listings describes a calibration screw, and a sealed vial should stay sealed. Loosening the glass will not make the level true. If the test fails and the instructions give no approved adjustment, return the level. Cardboard under a low corner is not a fix. Stop when the level disagrees with itself.
What if the sole is bent, or the level fails?
If you can see a bend, or the level rocks, do not mark from it, and do not stand on it to press it flat. A matching vial cannot correct a sole that misses the work. A new level that fails, or arrives bent, is a reason to reject it under section 9 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Use the seller's returns, and test again after a knock.
