Carpenter's pencil buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are marking a stud, a brick course or a plasterboard cut, and the school pencil in the pouch has rolled off the board or snapped. A carpenter's pencil buying guide starts with the mark you have to reach. Stored amazon.co.uk prices for these eleven listings run from about £4.99 to about £25.42. Peter F. read those listings and public UK sources on 22 October 2026, without a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. A flat, oval or triangular body marks an open face and will not enter a narrow hole. Set that order on our [carpenter's pencil comparison](/hub/measuring-and-marking-tools/carpenter-s-pencil).

Start with the hole, not the brand

The body has to touch the surface, or the brand does not matter. A flat or oval builders pencil marks timber, brick or plasterboard on an open face, and it will not pass into a narrow hole. Hultafors, writing for the UK, puts a wooden pencil on that open face and a deep-hole marker where the body cannot enter. Tracer's claim, repeated by Bradfords, is about 100 mm in a 3 mm hole or 145 mm in a 6 mm hole. That is the maker's figure. Here the AMK1 is about £11.71, the MECHEER has a 45 mm nose at about £7.49, and the Olivvia is about £4.99, with one stored review saying it has no sharpener. Skip a deep-hole pencil for a wide line on a UK site. Hole sizes are on the deep-hole or flat carpenter's pencil page.

Read the grade that is actually printed

The letter on the packet is a label, not proof that one core is harder than another. ISO 9180:1988 orders black leads from 9H to 6B and states that hardness has no scientific definition in the standard. Faber-Castell's UK FAQ adds that makers do not match exactly, so one brand's 4H is not a lab result against another's HB. The Tracer ACP1 (B0CC33FQN7, about £5.95) prints 4H. The XTSUN (B0H53V6RLV, about £4.99), the MECHEER (B0CN5DDDCZ, about £7.49) and the Nicpro (B0CLR6HB3P, about £19.99) print HB. Tracer's deep-hole kits print 2B, and the Trademaster TriGrip (B0DXQ766MG, about £9.99) says only hard lead. The Pro at about £24.95 is still a deep-hole kit, so a higher price is not a harder grade. An unlabelled core is a weaker buy than a named grade. The detail sits on the carpenter pencil lead grades page.

Match the line to the job

Diameter changes the mark more than the brand does. These listings name 1.3 mm, 2.8 mm and 5.2 mm leads. Axminster notes that a pencil line has thickness, and fine bench work wants a knife line instead. The Tracer Precision at about £10.99 is the 1.3 mm lead, useful on a hinge, and a poor choice on brick where the line vanishes. The Tracer Tough at about £25.42 is the 5.2 mm lead, and it is too wide for that hinge. Most long-nose pencils here are about 2.8 mm, including the AMK1, the Pencil 2.0 at about £16.79 and the Pro. Nicpro adds coloured leads, and one reviewer saw red through Zinsser Coverstain and wiped it off before painting. Use the finest lead you can still see, and step up only on rough stock.

Check the sharpener before you pay

A flat core will not fit a school sharpener. Several Tracer ACP1 reviews say that sharpener tears the wood. At about £5.95 you may still need a knife, so the gadget is not the saving. A holster sharpener suits a round 2.8 mm lead and will not dress a flat core. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 9, a chipped sharpener is a fault in the goods, and a tip you snapped by levering the lead is not. If you whittle, Health and Safety Executive hand-knife guidance says cut away from your body.

Common questions

Is a £4.99 pack enough if you lose pencils?
It is enough for an open-face mark you expect to lose. The XTSUN at about £4.99 prints HB, but its five stored reviews are labelled Germany, not UK opinion. The Olivvia is also about £4.99, and one review says it has no sharpener. The ACP1 at about £5.95 adds a printed 4H, and neither cheap pack is a holster you will keep.
When is a 5.2 mm lead too bold?
A 5.2 mm lead is too bold for a hinge or a joint you would cut to a knife line. Axminster's point is that a pencil line already has thickness, so a bold core enlarges the error. The Tough at about £25.42 is that wide lead, and it suits rough stock. For a wall you will paint, the Precision at about £10.99 with a 1.3 mm lead is the closer match.
Does a pack sharpener replace a knife?
It does not replace a knife on a flat pencil. The core misses a school sharpener, and the pack tool tends to leave a round point rather than a chisel edge. Several ACP1 reviews say the sharpener tears the wood, so the £5.95 pencil may still need a blade. A holster sharpener is for a round deep-hole lead. If a blade feels unsafe, do not whittle.
Which listings have no printed grade?
The Trademaster at about £9.99 says hard lead and prints no 4H, HB or 2B. Other listings that omit those letters are unlabelled too. Named grades are the ACP1 at 4H, the XTSUN, MECHEER and Nicpro at HB, and the Tracer deep-hole kits at 2B. An unlabelled core is not a hidden harder grade. Read the bullet before you trust it on planed timber.
Is there a British Standard for these pencils?
No British Standard in our sources approves these pencils, and the listings show no UKCA mark. ISO 9180:1988 sorts lead grades and says hardness is not scientifically defined. The Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 9, still requires the description to match and the goods to be satisfactory. A sharpener that arrives broken is a fault in the goods. A tip snapped by levering the lead is down to the user.
