Measuring wheel for rough ground

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are measuring a paddock, a gravel drive, or a rutted track, and a small wheel is already skipping. A measuring wheel for rough ground is a different class from the 15 cm wheel that was fine on the patio. Bounce and slip change the count in opposite directions, and a 32 cm site wheel is still not a land wheel. Peter F. used the amazon.co.uk listings from 19 October 2026 and notes from York Survey, Trumeter, and Wikipedia. We did not test these wheels on a field. The grid is the [measuring wheel comparison](/hub/measuring-and-marking-tools/measuring-wheel). A purchase through our links may earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Rough ground changes the count

On a flat path the tyre stays down and the counter adds a steady roll. On rough ground it leaves the surface, skids, or drops into a hole. Air time under-reads, because the counter pauses while you move forward. Following every dip over-reads against a straight tape. Slip under-reads too. A seller line of ±0.5% does not describe gravel. We did not test it. Bosch’s UK page states ±1 dm per 100 m for the GWM 32, which is not a promise on ploughed ground. If the number will set a price, tape the broken stretch and wheel the even run. When the line itself is the question, see measuring wheel vs tape measure.

Three classes of wheel

A 140–150 mm wheel is for smoother work. Here that is the Amtech at 140 mm and the Zozen at 15 cm. A wheel near 32 cm, about a 1 m circumference, is the site class for grass, paths, and ordinary gravel. The mechanical TOPWAY states 318 mm, the orange Zozen states 32 cm, and the Bosch GWM 32 states 318.5 mm. Site grass is that job. Ploughed ground and deep mud are not. A land wheel is not in this basket. York Survey lists a Trumeter with a mud scraper and a stated ±1%, at £345 ex VAT. Size and counter, before you shop, are the measuring wheel buying guide.

What these listings are good for outside

For ordinary grass and a path, use a stated 32 cm or 318 mm wheel, not the Amtech. The mechanical TOPWAY at £19.99 is the cheap 318 mm option, with a slight build in the reviews and 64 ratings. The orange Zozen at £35.99 gives 32 cm, a bag, and 20 flags. Flags mark a layout. They do not stop bounce. Do not assume a 32 cm tyre from a fold if the listing never states the diameter. The GWM 32 at £78.72 is the named 318.5 mm rim with a case, for a gravel drive you can walk slowly, after you have checked the reset. It is not a land wheel. The digital TOPWAY draws reviews of bounce on loose surfaces and screens that die.

Walk the worst stretch slowly

Walk slowly enough that the tyre stays in contact. Seat the handle first. The Amtech collapses when the lock meets a bump. Lift the tyre to read the counter so it cannot add a turn. If the tyre packs with soil, stop and clear it. When a stretch hops, tape that stretch and start the wheel again on even ground. Do not add a guessed percentage. Pick up wire flags, including the 20 in the orange Zozen kit. If the whole field is ruts and mud, buy a land wheel, at York’s £345 ex VAT for the Trumeter example, rather than another 32 cm wheel from this set.

Common questions

Can I use a measuring wheel on grass?
Yes, on a lawn, a pitch, or a path, with a wheel near 32 cm rather than 15 cm. Long tussocky grass hides dips and can lift the tyre, which under-reads. Walk slowly and check a taped length on the same grass. A 140 mm wheel will not describe a paddock.
Is a 15 cm wheel all right on gravel?
It is a poor match. Gravel lets a small tyre skid and bounce, so the count can drift either way. A stated 318 mm or 32 cm wheel is the class here for a gravel drive you can walk. Deep loose stone is closer to a land wheel, and a site wheel still wants a tape check.
Will the reading be long or short if the wheel bounces?
Air time under-reads, because the counter pauses while you move. Dips over-read against a straight-line distance. Slip under-reads. One walk can mix all three, so you cannot add a fixed percentage. Slow down until the tyre stays down, and tape any stretch where it will not. A 0.1 m display will not reveal the problem. The taped check will.
Do I need a land wheel for a field?
You need one when the field is rutted, ploughed, or muddy enough that a 32 cm wheel leaves the ground. York’s Trumeter is the example: a scraper, a stated ±1%, and £345 ex VAT. A mown paddock can stay with a 32 cm wheel from this set. A land wheel for a lawn is unnecessary. A 15 cm wheel for a ploughed field is the mistake in the other direction.
Is the Bosch GWM 32 enough for a gravel drive?
It is the strongest candidate in this set: a 318.5 mm rim, a case, and Bosch’s ±1 dm per 100 m, at £78.72 with 4.6 from 256 ratings. Walk slowly and check the reset, because UK reviews include a counter that would not return to zero. It is not enough for plough or deep mud. A gravel drive you can walk is a site-wheel job. A field you sink into is not.
What about a railway or a ploughed field?
Do not measure a live railway. A Stanley review says the rubber left the rim on uneven railway ground. A ploughed field is a land-wheel job, not a task for the Amtech or a 32 cm site wheel. If someone will rely on the figure, use a surveyor.
