How to use a contour gauge

Updated: 22 October 2026

The usual failure is not the brand on the handle. You press the gauge, walk to the saw, and the pins have shifted, so the pencil line is a different shape from the pipe or the jamb. How to use a contour gauge comes down to a square press, a held outline, and tracing before that outline is lost. The steps below are for a gauge you already own. Prices stay on the [contour gauge comparison](/hub/measuring-and-marking-tools/contour-gauge). The sequence comes from Ideal Home, wolfcraft's English laminate booklet, and the limits printed on the amazon.co.uk listings captured on 19 October 2026. Set the pins and press square

Line the pins up so they form a straight row before they touch the obstacle. A pin that already sticks out will hit first and bend. Push the body of the gauge, not the tips. Ideal Home's account is the same idea: line the pins up, press, lock, trace, then cut. Keep the body square to the face you are copying. A tilt lengthens the outline, and the board you cut from that line will not sit. If the moulding is deeper than the pins, stop. MECHEER states a maximum depth of 6 cm. DODOWIN's 10 inch bullets state about 10 cm. Forcing the tips into a deeper rebate bends them. Press until the pins have all met the surface, then stop pushing.

Lock or hold, then trace at once

Close the lock while the gauge is still against the obstacle, then lift. If your gauge has no lock, keep your hand on the body and trace before you let go. Amazon Basics states a non-locking friction fit, and UK reviews say the shape is easy to capture and harder to transfer. Saker's note says to pencil the outline as soon as the gauge leaves the shape, because a bag or a stack of offcuts nudges the pins. MECHEER's bullets say not to pull the lock to the end of its travel. If the pins move under a light finger after you have closed the clamp, tracing copies the wrong shape. The difference between a clamp and friction is on contour gauge with lock. Lay the pin ends on the board and pencil along them. Cut on the waste side, then test the offcut before you commit the visible plank. This tool copies an outline. It does not set a 45 degree joint.

The line can still be the wrong line

Two errors survive a careful press. Tilt stretches the copy. Mirroring is the other: the gauge has two long edges, and flipping it to mark the underside can swap the shape. Trace the edge that still matches the obstacle. Mark an offcut, offer it up, and only then mark the piece you will see. Pins that stop halfway down an architrave copy the front bead and ignore the back. Measure the projection with a ruler before you trust a listing that leaves depth unstated. The movement gap on a floating floor is a further allowance you add after the outline. The 10 mm figure is on contour gauge for laminate flooring.

When the pins will not move

Do not hammer a stuck pin. TOPWAY reviews describe teeth that bend instead of sliding. The single JOREST says tightness is factory-set and that you do not adjust it. If those pins will not slide, the fix is not more force. Retire the tool when teeth are permanently bent, when a lock no longer clamps, or when a securing screw has snapped, which one SULIVES review reports after two uses. Press paper into the profile when the pins are bent. Call a joiner or a gas-safe engineer when the cut meets a joist, a stair, a gas pipe or listed or stone work. If the tool is simply too short, width and depth are in the contour gauge buying guide.

Common questions

When do I close the lock?
Close it while the gauge is still pressed square against the obstacle, then lift. wolfcraft's pipe steps are unlock, push, lock with the lever, then transfer. If there is no lock, trace before you relax your hand. Closing a lock after the gauge has left the wall only clamps whatever shape the pins fell into on the way.
What if the shape changes on the way to the saw?
The pins were nudged, or the lock did not hold. Saker's note says a bag or a pile of offcuts is enough to move them. Go back to the obstacle and press again. Do not correct a slipped outline by eye and then cut the visible board. One Tracer review says the bars still moved with the lock on, so check with a finger before you trust the clamp.
What if the pins will not slide?
Loosen a tension screw if the gauge has one, as on AI Gear or TOPWAY. Do not force a tooth that bends instead of moving. The single JOREST is factory-set, so there is no screw to undo. If the pins stay stuck or stay bent, retire the gauge and use a paper template for that one shape.
Is the gauge measuring the angle in degrees?
No. It copies an outline. JOREST's 10 inch title mentions measuring an angle, and the technical table has no degree scale. A skirting mitre is a separate bevel. Read the pin ends as a shape, not as a number of degrees.
When should I stop and use a paper template or call someone?
Use paper when the pins are bent, too thick for the beads, or shorter than the moulding. Call a professional when the cut involves a joist, a stair, a gas pipe, a waste that must move, or listed or stone work. A contour gauge only transfers a shape. It does not make a structural or gas-related cut safe.
