Water level hose buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are marking a fence, a fascia, or the next room, and a straight spirit level stops at the corner. A water level hose buying guide starts with the length that still lies in a gentle curve, then with whether you need a millimetre scale. The seven amazon.co.uk listings in our [hose level comparison](/hub/measuring-and-marking-tools/hose-level) are the set. This page orders the choice and does not name a winner. Peter F. used listings gathered on 20 October 2026 and did not run a lab test. Prices are the GBP figures in that file. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

How long the hose needs to be

Reach comes first. A hose that finishes tight cannot show a settled waterline, because the column needs a gentle curve at the far point. DIY Doctor’s UK note for fence posts talks about 15–21 m of tube and slack around the obstacle. A straight line from post to post under-reads the path once you pass a pier or a bay. Titled lengths here are 10 m (as-Schwabe at £10.56, Faithfull FAIWL10HM at £21.99), 15 m (as-Schwabe at £13.11, Cellfast at £13.99), 20 m (Cellfast at £14.01, kwb at £18.99) and 25 m (Cellfast at £17.12, when 20 m would arrive stretched). A 10 m Schwabe title beside a 21 cm item-length field needs both figures kept in view. Filling is on the how to use a water level page.

Sight tubes and a scale

A plain hose can transfer one height. You and a helper wait until the water is still and mark the same part of the curve. That is enough when fence posts should share one datum. It is a weak fit for a fall you must read in millimetres, because the water stays level and the drop is a sum you apply afterwards. The Cellfast 20 m listing is the only file here that states both the tubes and the bore: plexiglas tubes 21 cm by 12 mm, a 0–10 cm millimetre scale, and a hose of 10 mm outside and 8 mm inside. The Cellfast 15 m and 25 m bullets name a millimetre scale and do not state the range. Schwabe and the kwb 0647-20 do not name tubes or a scale.

Caps, bore, and a hose that stays round

The level only reads when both ends are open to the same air. Caps let you walk without spilling, and they fail you when they will not come off. UK reviews needed pliers and wine corks on the Cellfast 20 m kit, call the 15 m caps very tight or missing, and describe stiff caps, a leaking top pipe, and a thumb on the 25 m set. The Cellfast 20 m file states 8 mm inside, 10 mm outside, and a 1 mm wall. The kwb bullet calls 8 mm the inner diameter. Both Schwabe listings state 8 mm outside and a 1.5 mm wall, without an inside diameter, so this page will not calculate one. The 15 m Cellfast file does not state a bore. The 25 m outside-diameter field says 1 centimetre, and the wall field says 1 with no unit.

What the prices in this set are telling you

The band runs from £10.56 to £21.99. The as-Schwabe 10 m hose is the entry price, with a 10 m title and a 21 cm item-length field. The 15 m Schwabe at £13.11 shares 4.4 from 515 and the same three UK review texts. That is one parent block, not two samples. The Cellfast 20 m at £14.01 prints tube size and bore, on 4.2 from 508 reviews. The 15 m Cellfast at £13.99 names a scale and does not state the range. The kwb at £18.99 shows 5.0 from five reviews and no review text. The Cellfast 25 m at £17.12 buys length. The Faithfull at £21.99 is 3.7. UK reviews say the hose falls off. Faithfull’s site states 1 mm at 10 m, which is not in the amazon.co.uk file.

Common questions

How long a hose do I need for a house, a fence, or a gutter run?
Measure the path the hose will walk, including the way around a corner, and leave slack so the tube is not tight. In this set, 10 m covers a short fascia or one room, 15–20 m covers a modest run of posts, and 25 m is the long garden hose. DIY Doctor’s fence example uses about 15–21 m.
Is a plain PVC hose enough, or do I need sight tubes?
A plain hose is enough when both ends should show the same height and you will mark the waterline by eye. Sight tubes earn their place when you must read a difference, such as a gutter fall after the level mark. The Cellfast 20 m file is the only one here that states a 0–10 cm scale.
What diameter should the hose be?
Use the figure the listing prints. The Cellfast 20 m states 8 mm inside and 10 mm outside. The kwb bullet calls 8 mm the inner diameter. Both Schwabe hoses state 8 mm outside and a 1.5 mm wall, without an inside diameter. The Cellfast 15 m file does not state a bore.
Why do end caps matter if the ends must be open to read?
Caps keep the water in while you walk. You uncover the ends before you read. On these Cellfast listings, UK reviews describe caps that need pliers, caps that pop off, missing stoppers, and caps so stiff that a thumb is used instead.
Are the two as-Schwabe star lines two separate sets of reviews?
They are one parent block. B008YSFOC4 and B008YSFOCO both show 4.4 from 515, with the same three UK review texts. The 15 m hose is £13.11. The 10 m hose is £10.56, with a 21 cm item-length field beside the 10 m title. Counting 515 twice would double a sample the file does not split.
