Magnetic spirit level for steel and pipe

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are lining a steel stud, conduit, or a black-iron pipe, and the level slides as soon as you let go. A magnetic spirit level for steel and pipe stays put only when the metal is ferrous and the base can seat on that shape. On a flat mild-steel stud the magnets do the holding. On a round pipe they still need a surface that pulls, and a V-groove only stops the body rolling off. Copper, plastic, aluminium, and most austenitic stainless will not give you that hold. Peter F. updated this on 22 October 2026 from the amazon.co.uk listings stored for this [magnetic spirit level](/hub/measuring-and-marking-tools/spirit-level-magnet) comparison, with no laboratory test. The magnet needs ferrous metal

A magnetic spirit level holds where a hand magnet holds. The British Stainless Steel Association describes typical austenitic stainless, including 304 and 316, as giving a negligible response to a hand magnet. Ferritic, martensitic, duplex, and most precipitation-hardening grades do pull. If a fridge magnet does not pull on that piece, the level's magnet will not either. Cold work is the limit. Bending, shearing, or welding can leave a local pull at a corner or a weld, even on austenitic steel, and that tug is not a hold along a handrail. A stainless sink often slides, so test the face you will use, not a nearby weld. Compared with a plain bubble level, the magnet is only a clamp.

Copper, plastic, and aluminium will not hold

Iron and steel attract a magnet, and aluminium and copper do not, which BBC Bitesize states plainly. A copper pipe, a plastic waste, or an aluminium frame will not stick the level. A slow fall inside a copper tube is eddy-current braking, not a grip you can mark from. In a UK house the supply is often copper or plastic, so the magnet does nothing useful there. Black iron, cast iron, and galvanised steel conduit can hold if the surface is ferrous and paint has not lifted the base clear. A V-groove only stops a roll on a round pipe. On copper you still hold the level while the bubble settles. One stored Duratech review describes a pipe fitter using that level on pipe and Unistrut. It does not prove your pipe is ferrous. If a fridge magnet slides off, support the level yourself.

Which of these listings name a groove

Three stored amazon.co.uk listings name a groove. Duratech prints a top V-groove for pipes and conduits, Prexiso prints a V-groove with two milled magnetic faces, and the WORKPRO 115 mm highlight says the base is grooved. A 115 mm body seats a small pipe, and it will miss a bow an 800 mm level would show. Length sits on the magnetic spirit level buying guide. Huepar and Grettz name steel pipes as a magnet hold, and their bullets do not name a groove. A flat hold is not a notch that stops a roll. The FatMax 0-43-609 bullets on amazon.co.uk do not name a groove, so magnetic base there is not a pipe groove, though Stanley's UK page prints a V-shaped groove. We do not overwrite the amazon wording. Prexiso is a manual laser at a stored £34.99, not a self-levelling site laser.

No kilogram figure, and keep the edge off an implant

None of these listings prints a pull in kilograms. A strong-magnet line, including the rare-earth claim on the Grettz, is not a figure you can rank. Overhead on a painted steel beam, set the base and keep one hand ready, because paint or a curve can beat the magnet. If the level creeps, you support it, as you would on copper. GOV.UK guidance says small fixed magnets can affect a pacemaker, a defibrillator, or a cochlear implant inside about 3 cm, so keep the edge off the implant. No stored pull figure lets you set another distance. HSG281 is an employer duty when an implant has been declared, not a clearance on the level. A day on strong magnets sits with your clinician or your employer. A screen follows the same metal rule. Ferrous steel does the holding, and a groove only seats the body.

Common questions

Will a magnetic spirit level stick to a stainless sink or handrail?
Often it will not. Typical austenitic stainless, including 304 and 316, usually gives a negligible pull to a hand magnet, according to the British Stainless Steel Association, while ferritic and martensitic grades usually do pull. Cold work can tug at a weld, and that tug is not a reliable hold along the rail. If a fridge magnet slides on the face you will use, you hold the level yourself.
Will it stick to copper or plastic pipe?
Copper, plastic, and aluminium are not ferrous. BBC Bitesize states that aluminium and copper are not magnetic, so the level will not stick to those pipes. A V-groove can stop a roll, though you still hold the tool while you read the bubble. Black iron, cast iron, and galvanised conduit can hold when a fridge magnet sticks. A slow fall in a copper tube is braking, not a stick.
What is a V-groove for if the magnet is already there?
The magnet clamps the level to ferrous metal. The V-groove only seats the body on a round pipe so it does not roll. On a flat stud you may not need it, but on round steel conduit you want both. On copper the groove still only stops a roll, and it is not a stronger magnet.
Which stored listings name a groove?
Duratech, Prexiso, and the WORKPRO 115 mm highlight name a groove in the stored listings. Huepar, Grettz, and the FatMax amazon.co.uk bullets do not, though Stanley's UK page for 0-43-609 prints a V-shaped groove. Klein, CK, and Ridgid are outside this comparison.
Does magnetic base on the FatMax listing mean a pipe groove?
The amazon.co.uk bullets stored here do not name a groove, so magnetic base only tells you the level is magnetic. Stanley's UK page for FatMax 0-43-609 does print a V-shaped groove, and that sentence does not replace the amazon wording. If you need the groove named before you order, Duratech, Prexiso, or the WORKPRO 115 mm highlight is the clearer match. The stored FatMax price was £14.99.
What if I have a pacemaker?
Keep the magnetic edge off the implant. GOV.UK guidance says small fixed magnets can affect a pacemaker, a defibrillator, or a cochlear implant inside about 3 cm. These listings give no pull in kilograms, so you cannot stretch that distance from a product figure. HSE HSG281 is an employer duty when an implant is declared, not a label on the level. A day on strong magnets belongs with your clinician or your employer.
