Chalk line buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a floor or a stud wall to mark, and the amazon.co.uk titles all sound like the same reel. A chalk line buying guide starts with the bottle, because a dry cord will not leave a line on the day it arrives. Peter F. compared eleven chalk reels on amazon.co.uk, using listing text and UK review counts, with no lab test. Prices are GBP shelf prices. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. The [chalk line comparison](/hub/measuring-and-marking-tools/chalk-line) holds the rows. Buy in this order: powder, length, bold or fine cord, gear ratio, then the case and the reviews written after a fill.

What you are buying

A chalk line here is a self-chalking reel. Powder sits in a chamber, the cord runs through it, and a short lift snaps a straight mark onto timber, board, concrete, or a floor. It is a hand tool. Nothing in this set needs a battery or a 13 A plug. A builders' string line is a different tool: it has no chalk chamber, and you use it to sight a course of brick, not to leave pigment behind. On this shelf, around 20 October 2026, an entry reel sits under £9, a mid-price reel from £9 to £15, and the upper listings in this set from £17 to £22. Stanley's FatMax 0-47-681 was £14.99 that day, outside this set, so it is only a price marker. A long cord is useless if it will not rewind once the chamber has powder in it.

Length and line

Use about 15 m when the longest mark is a room. The Rolson 52537 listing prints 15 m and costs about £4.08, with blue chalk in the bullets. The OX Pro reel, OX-P630702, prints 50 ft, which is 15.25 m, at about £11.34. Step up to 30 m, or a 100 ft title, when one pull has to cross a deck, a long floor, or a wall you do not want to join in the middle. Most other titles here print 30 m or 100 ft. Named picks are on the best chalk line page. Thickness is a separate choice. OX Trade OX-T630602 and the OX Contractor reel print a 1.75 mm bold cotton-nylon cord. OX Pro prints a 0.5 mm Kevlar line for a cut mark or panelling, though reviewers say that thin cord can be hard to see and hard to grab. Milwaukee 48-22-3986 is titled as a 100 ft bold line. Amazon buckets such as “2mm_and_above” are listing labels, not a diameter we measured. On concrete, a bold cord is the safer default, because a hairline disappears in the texture.

Gear ratio

The number on the case is spool turns per turn of the crank. At 1:1 the spool turns once. At 3:1 it turns three times, and at 6:1 six times, so a higher ratio winds a long line in faster. It is not a quality grade. In this set, 6:1 is printed on OX Trade, the Milwaukee bold reel, PRESCH, and the HAUTMEC titles that state a ratio. OX Pro is 3:1. OX Contractor OX-T630502 is 1:1. The Contractor title also talks about a faster rewind, which fights the meaning of 1:1. Read the ratio, not the adjective. Tolsen 42012 says the rewind is up to three times faster than a basic reel and does not print a ratio, so you cannot line it up against 6:1. A full chamber can make a high ratio feel stiff: PRESCH reviewers mention a tight crank after filling, at about £21.99.

Powder in the box

Check the title before the star rating. OX Trade includes 118 ml of blue chalk at about £12.00. The OX Pro style name includes a blue refill. PRESCH includes 150 g of red. Tolsen and Rolson list powder. OX Contractor states that powder is not included, at about £8.35, so the lower price is a reel-only price. Two HAUTMEC listings dsaved reviews that say no chalk arrived. Milwaukee’s material field mentions red chalk, but a bottle is not in the specification fields. A first reel for a Saturday job wants blue or white powder in the same parcel. A reel you load every week can be bought bare if you already keep a tub that matches the work. Red in the PRESCH box is a different decision from “more visible”, because trade sources treat red as a permanent mark. If the listing contradicts itself, trust the sentence that says what is in the parcel. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 is the match-the-description rule when a value pack arrives without the powder the title promised.

What to skip

Skip a string line if you need a mark that stays after you walk away, and skip a chalk reel if you only need to sight brickwork. Skip any Amazon field the title disagrees with. HAUTMEC HT0108-CL bullets say ABS while the material field says alloy steel, at about £11.99, so the case is not settled by the grid. Aluminium is not automatically tougher: HAUTMEC HT0356 claims an aluminium box at about £8.99, with 3.7 from 10 reviews, and one text says the cord is only 8 m. Milwaukee reviewers who expected metal found plastic. There is no British Standard number to hunt for. Kennedy’s marking-chalk sheet says there is no DIN or other standard for this use, so a missing BS mark is not a hidden fault. Confirm the bottle is named, match 15 m to a room and 30 m or 100 ft to one long pull, and read 6:1 as rewind speed. Then read the reviews that mention a jam, a leak, or a snapped cord after the chamber was filled.

Common questions

Does a chalk line come with chalk?
Only when the listing says so. OX Trade includes 118 ml of blue, the OX Pro style name includes a blue refill, PRESCH includes 150 g of red, and Tolsen and Rolson list powder. OX Contractor states that powder is not included. Milwaukee does not put a bottle in the specification fields. If the title is silent, buy a tub before the first snap.
Is 15 m enough for a room?
For a room, yes. A 15 m reel such as the Rolson at about £4.08 covers a typical layout if you are not pulling one line the length of a deck. The OX Pro reel is about 15.25 m and is the short fine-line option. Choose 30 m or a 100 ft title when one pull has to stay in a single length.
What does 6:1 mean on a chalk reel?
The spool turns six times for each turn of the crank, so a long cord winds in faster than on a 1:1 reel. OX Trade, Milwaukee, PRESCH, and several HAUTMEC titles print 6:1. The ratio is rewind speed. It does not say the case is stronger or the line is straighter.
Is 1:1 faster than 6:1?
No. At 1:1 the spool turns once per crank turn, so you wind more slowly than at 6:1. The OX Contractor title is 1:1 and also uses “faster rewind” language, which you should ignore. A 6:1 reel can still feel stiff once the chamber is full, so the higher number is not a promise of a light handle.
Bold or fine for concrete?
Use a bold cord on concrete and block. OX Trade and OX Contractor print 1.75 mm. A 0.5 mm line, as on the OX Pro reel, is for a fine indoor mark, and reviews say it can be hard to see. Amazon line-size fields are not a measured diameter, so use the millimetre figure in the title when the listing gives one.
What should I ignore in the specification grid?
Ignore a material or a line size that the title contradicts. HAUTMEC HT0108-CL says ABS in the bullets and alloy steel in the material field. Buckets such as “2mm_and_above” are not a diameter. Read the in-the-box line, the length, and the reviews that describe the reel after it was filled.
