Sliding bevel comparison 2026

The best sliding bevels, compared.

Top pick: Bahco 9574-300, 300 mm Best value: Hilka 9 inch adjustable bevel – A 9 inch bevel at about £7.49, with 4.5 from 311 reviews. The OX also scores 82 and is not the value pick. Updated October 2026.

A sliding bevel, also called a T-bevel, copies an angle and holds it so you can mark timber or set a saw. UK buyers use one for stairs, skirting that is not square, and odd corners. A combination square still owns 90° and 45°. Quality is the lock: the blade must not move after you tighten it, which is the complaint that repeats in these amazon.co.uk listings. Lengths here run from a 200 mm OX to a 300 mm. No British Standard for the tool turned up in these sources. What to check before the table is in the [sliding bevel buying guide](/hub/measuring-and-marking-tools/sliding-bevel/sub/sliding-bevel-buying-guide). DIY says a wing nut that only closes the jaws is a weak stock, and says the beam must not move. The 9574-300 puts the wing screw at the end of the stock, and UK reviews praise that for skirt mitres. Swanson bullets put the bolt at the bottom, and several of the seven UK reviews say that unit still does not lock.

A sliding bevel, also called a T-bevel, copies an angle and holds it so you can mark timber or set a saw. UK buyers use one for stairs, skirting that is not square, and odd corners.

The best sliding bevels in detail

Bahco 9574-300, 300 mm

Rank 1

Bahco 9574-300, 300 mm

∼£36

Our view

Bahco 9574-300 is £35.94 and 190 g, the dearest listing in this set and the longest blade here at 300 mm. The bullets put the wing screw at the end of the stock, where it also works as a hanging hole. amazon.co.uk shows 4.7 from 343 reviews. UK reviews use that end lock for internal skirt mitres and alcoves, where a centre nut is in the way, and some say it locks all day on roof cuts. Two say the thread broke on first tightening. One says the orange plastic slides about 5 mm, and the wing nut is called cheap. The number-of-items field says 10, while the bullets say one bevel, so the 10 is listing noise. It is the end-lock choice for internal corners if you will return a stripped thread.

Pros

  • 300 mm and an end lock
  • 4.7 from 343 reviews
  • UK reviews name internal mitres and roof cuts
  • Highest price in this set buys the longest blade here

Cons

  • Thread snapped, in two UK reviews
  • Wing nut called cheap
  • Orange plastic not fixed, in one review
  • £35.94

Best for: You need a 300 mm bevel whose lock is at the end, for internal corners, and you will return a stripped thread.

Less suitable: You want a cheap centre-nut bevel. This is the dearest listing in this set, and the thread is a known complaint.

Common questions

Why is the Bahco screw at the end?

The bullets say the wing screw is at the end and also works as a hanging hole. UK reviews use that for internal skirt mitres and alcoves, where a centre nut is in the way.

Does the thread hold?

Some UK reviews say it locks all day on roof cuts. Two say the thread broke on first tightening. One says the orange plastic slides about 5 mm.

Is this a 10-piece kit?

The number-of-items field says 10. The bullets and the included-components line say one bevel. The 10 is listing noise.

PRESCH sliding bevel, 19/27 cm

Rank 2

PRESCH sliding bevel, 19/27 cm

∼£23

Our view

PRESCH 10209 is £22.99 and 290 g, with an aluminium stock, stainless rulers at 19 cm and 27 cm, a knob, and a pin. The included-components line says a sliding bevel including two rulers. amazon.co.uk shows 4.6 from 1,014 reviews, the largest count and the highest score in this set on the star-and-count method, not a lab test. UK reviews praise the pin and the extra ruler, and one says the nut stays out of the corner. They also include a ruler that still moves when the knob is tight, and blades called flimsy. One reviewer went back to a cheap wooden wing nut because it stayed put more easily, while other UK reviews call the same tool solid. Choose it for the two rulers and the review base if you can accept that the knob is still argued over.

Pros

  • 4.6 from 1,014 reviews, the largest count here
  • Second ruler and a pin are in the listing
  • One UK review says the nut stays out of the corner
  • £22.99

Cons

  • Knob slip, in one UK review
  • Blades called flimsy, in one UK review
  • 290 g, heavier than the wooden bevels

Best for: You want the aluminium bevel with two rulers and the largest review count in this set.

Less suitable: You want a wing nut you can lean on. One UK reviewer went back to a wooden one for that.

Common questions

What is in the PRESCH box?

The included-components line says a sliding bevel including 2 rulers. The bullets also describe a metal pin and a knob.

Does the knob hold?

Many UK reviews praise the build. One says the ruler still moves when the knob is tight. Another prefers a cheap wooden wing nut because it stays put more easily.

Are the blades stiff enough for site work?

One UK review calls the blades flimsy and the tool DIY rather than site-strong. Other UK reviews call the same tool solid.

Eophmi 230 mm bevel

Rank 3

Eophmi 230 mm bevel

Our view

Eophmi MEK756 is £6.99 and 120 g. The bullets say 230 mm, a 22.8 cm blade, a 16.5 cm handle, and a centre knob, and they also print 0–7 feet next to that short blade. amazon.co.uk shows 4.6 from 19 reviews. Seven UK reviews are on the listing. One says the lock works nicely, and one likes the brass and wood look. Another says the handle feels cheaper than the photos, and one says it is all right for DIY and not the first choice for regular use. The feet line is a listing quirk, so do not treat it as length. Buy it if you want a 230 mm hardwood bevel at this price and you will judge the lock when it arrives.

Pros

  • 4.6 from 19 on the listing
  • One review says the lock works
  • One review likes the brass and wood look

Cons

  • Handle feels cheaper than the photos, in one review
  • 0–7 feet printed on a short blade
  • Seven UK review texts, not 19 full texts

Best for: You want a 230 mm hardwood bevel at £6.99 and can judge the lock on arrival.

Less suitable: You want daily trade use. One UK review says to look elsewhere for regular work.

It is printed next to a blade the bullets call 22.8 cm and a handle they call 16.5 cm. It is not a 7-foot blade.

Hilka 9 inch adjustable bevel

Rank 4

Hilka 9 inch adjustable bevel

Our view

Hilka 76810790 is £7.49, titled as a 9 inch adjustable bevel, and the weight field is 170 g. amazon.co.uk shows 4.5 from 311 reviews, the large count behind best value in this set. UK reviews describe brass and varnished wood and a mechanism that locks tightly. One review says a brass plate on the bottom fell off, and one calls the tool cheap and cheerful. Buyers name woodwork, hand-cut angles, and decking-step handrails. The specification block also contains HDMI, RAM, and processor lines, which are computer-category noise and not the tool. Choose it when you want a 9 inch bevel around £7.50 with that review base. The clean fields still do not print a lock type or a millimetre blade length.

Pros

  • £7.49 with 4.5 from 311 reviews
  • Several UK reviews say it locks and feels sturdy
  • Used on decking-step handrails, in one review

Cons

  • Spec block is polluted with computer fields
  • One brass plate fell off
  • One review calls it cheap and cheerful

Best for: You want a 9 inch bevel around £7.50 with a large UK review count, and you will ignore the computer fields.

Less suitable: You need a printed lock type or a millimetre blade length. Neither is in the clean fields.

Does it lock?

The specification fields do not name the lock. UK reviews say the mechanism locks tightly. One review says a brass plate on the bottom fell off.

What did buyers use it for?

UK reviews name woodwork, hand-cut angles, and decking-step handrails. A case is asked in a question heading and not answered.

OX Trade sliding bevel, 200 mm

Rank 5

OX Trade sliding bevel, 200 mm

Our view

OX Trade OX-T507420 is £7.50, titled 200 mm, with plastic and stainless steel, a locking nut, and two vials. The weight field is 90 g. amazon.co.uk shows 4.5 from 290 reviews, and the rank line is 1 in Angle Gauges. UK reviews include stair spindles. They also include a blade that still moves, degree marks too small to set a chosen angle, and a horizontal vial that centres only when the blade is several degrees off level. Scratched arrivals are in the UK reviews. The dimensions field says 90 by 40 cm, which does not match the 200 mm title, so keep the title length. It is the light vial tool if you will check the bubble and the lock before you cut.

Pros

  • £7.50 and 4.5 from 290 reviews
  • 200 mm is in the title
  • UK reviews use it on stair spindles
  • Rank line 1 in Angle Gauges

Cons

  • Lock slip in UK reviews
  • One horizontal vial reported out
  • Scratched arrivals
  • 90 cm dimension field does not match 200 mm

Best for: You want a light 200 mm OX with vials and you will check the bubble and the lock before you cut.

Less suitable: You need the vial as a site level, or a lock that reviewers say stays put.

Common questions

Do the OX vials work as a level?

The bullets say two vials. One UK review says the horizontal bubble centres only when the blade is several degrees off level.

Does the nut hold the angle?

The bullets say a reinforced locking nut. UK reviews include a blade that still moves, and degree marks that are too small to set a chosen angle.

Why does the size field say 90 cm?

The raw dimensions field says 90 by 40 cm. The title says 200 mm. The 90 cm figure is the listing field, not a second measurement.

Dapetz 9 inch sliding bevel

Rank 6

Dapetz 9 inch sliding bevel

Our view

Dapetz DP06817 is £8.59 and 160 g. The bullets say 9 inches or 230 mm, an 18 cm handle, a 27 cm folded length, and a central wing nut. amazon.co.uk shows 4.5 from 40 reviews. Seven UK reviews are short praise and name no fault, so they do not describe the lock under load. The rank line sits in Clamps, which is the wrong shelf for a bevel. A question heading asks about a case, and the listing does not answer it; the bullets describe one bevel. It suits you if a 230 mm wing-nut bevel at this price and those short comments are enough, and you do not need a detailed account of how the nut behaves once the blade is set.

Pros

  • 230 mm and a wing nut are in the bullets
  • Short UK reviews call it fine for DIY and carpentry
  • 4.5 from 40 on the listing

Cons

  • The UK reviews do not describe the lock under load
  • Rank line sits in Clamps, which is the wrong shelf
  • Case not confirmed

Best for: You want a 230 mm wing-nut bevel at £8.59 and the short UK comments are enough.

Less suitable: You want a detailed lock test. These seven reviews do not give one.

Shinwa 62596 sliding bevel

Rank 7

Shinwa 62596 sliding bevel

∼£19

Our view

Shinwa 62596 is £18.90. The material field is stainless steel and the graduation field is 250 mm. The weight field says 20 g, which is the Amazon listing figure and not a weighed result beside a tool of that size. amazon.co.uk shows 4.2 from 70 reviews. UK reviews praise the machining and use it on MDF, ply, and a machine bed. They argue about the brass screw: one praises an oversized nut, another needed a screwdriver, and a third mentions a burr on the blade. Two say the slim body is easy to lose, and one calls it a poor tool to carry for fascia on a roof. It is a bench bevel if you will not treat 20 g as the real weight.

Pros

  • Stainless 62596 at £18.90
  • Several UK reviews praise the machining
  • Suited to a bench or a machine bed, in reviews

Cons

  • 20 g listing weight is not credible next to the size
  • Hard to lock by hand, in one review
  • Easy to lose, and poor for moving roof work, in reviews

Best for: You want a slim stainless bevel for bench layout and you will not treat 20 g as the real weight.

Less suitable: You carry tools up a roof. UK reviews say this one is easy to lose and awkward there.

Common questions

Does the Shinwa weigh 20 g?

The Amazon field says 20 g. That is the listing figure. It is not a weighed result here, and it sits next to a 250 mm stainless tool. A retailer page for the 62596 says 202 g. Do not average the two.

Where do UK reviewers use it?

Reviews name MDF and ply, and a machine bed. One says it is a poor tool to carry for fascia on a roof. Two say the slim body is easy to lose.

Does the brass screw lock by hand?

One review praises an oversized nut. Another says the brass screw needed a screwdriver. A third mentions a burr on the blade.

Tonmifr sliding bevel, 240 mm

Rank 8

Tonmifr sliding bevel, 240 mm

∼£18

Our view

Tonmifr T-002 is £17.99 and 340 g, heavier than the wooden bevels in this set. The title says 240 mm. The bullets add metric and imperial marks, detents at 20, 30, 45, 60, and 90 degrees, an extension arm, a tungsten-carbide pen, and a magnetic steel scriber. amazon.co.uk shows 4.2 from 57 reviews. UK reviews praise the aluminium body and split on the cam lever: some call it quick, and one finds the cam large next to a wing nut. One review says the box is ordinary cardboard. The ±0.01 mm line is a bullet, not a lab result, and the detents are stops rather than a full degree scale. It fits if you want those stops and a carbide point as well as a bevel.

Pros

  • 240 mm with named detents
  • Scribers for wood and for harder surfaces, in the bullets
  • Several UK reviews call the aluminium body solid

Cons

  • Cam called bulky, in one review
  • Heavier than the wooden bevels, 340 g
  • ±0.01 mm is only a bullet

Best for: You want detents and a carbide point as well as a bevel, at £17.99.

Less suitable: You want the smallest lock. One UK review says the cam is large next to a wing nut.

Common questions

What extra parts are in the Tonmifr box?

The bullets list a 240 mm ruler, a tungsten-carbide pen, a built-in magnetic steel scriber, and a manual. One UK review says the box is ordinary cardboard.

How does it lock?

UK reviews describe a cam lever. Some call it quick. One compares it with a wing nut and finds the cam large.

Are the degree stops a protractor?

The bullets name stops at 20, 30, 45, 60, and 90 degrees. They are detents, not a full degree scale you can set to any number.

Vorythm sliding bevel

Rank 9

Vorythm sliding bevel

Our view

Vorythm B0H339NLXK is listed at £5.99 and 120 g on amazon.co.uk, the lowest price in this set. The bullets name a stainless blade, a hardwood handle, and a centre knob, and the title says a 360 degree lock. The star line is 4.2 from 3 reviews. The listing holds one UK review, and the text is only "Good quality". No blade length is on that listing, so you cannot compare reach with the 200 mm or 230 mm tools beside it. A centre knob can sit in the way of an internal corner, and three reviews do not show whether this unit stays locked after you tighten it. It is the cheapest listing if you will check the lock on arrival and can accept that the length is missing.

Pros

  • Lowest price in this set, £5.99
  • Bullets name a hardwood handle and a stainless blade

Cons

  • Only one UK review text
  • No blade length on the listing

Best for: You want the cheapest listing in this set and can accept three reviews.

Less suitable: You need a known blade length or a lock that several UK reviewers have described.

hioseyre 230 mm bevel

Rank 10

hioseyre 230 mm bevel

Our view

hioseyre B0F6BLHCXY is £6.89 and 130 g. The graduation field says 230 mm, and the bullets say a 22.8 cm blade, a 16.5 cm handle, hardwood, stainless steel, and a centre knob. The same bullets print a 0–7 feet scale, which is not a 7-foot rule on a blade that short. amazon.co.uk shows 4.1 from 26 reviews, and five UK reviews are on the listing. One calls it decent for DIY and not for trade. Another names sharp edges and damaged wood. The brass decoration on the handle is a finish detail, not a lock. Use it for occasional DIY if you will ignore the feet scale and check the edges before it goes in a pocket.

Pros

  • 230 mm is printed
  • One review calls it robust for DIY

Cons

  • 0–7 feet on a 22.8 cm blade
  • Sharp edges and damaged wood, in one review
  • One review says not for trade

Best for: You want a 230 mm hardwood bevel at £6.89 for occasional DIY.

Less suitable: You need a scale you can trust in feet, or a finish without sharp edges.

Swanson SVV150, 9 inch

Rank 11

Swanson SVV150, 9 inch

∼£13

Our view

Swanson SVV150 is £12.70 and 170 g. The bullets say a 9 inch etched stainless blade, an anodised aluminium frame, a rubber insert, and a bolt at the bottom so both sides of the T-bevel stay usable. amazon.co.uk shows 4.0 from 512 reviews. Seven of the reviews are marked United Kingdom, and four of them say the blade still moves or the screw will not tighten. One UK review says one face is metric and imperial and the other face is imperial only. One trade review praises the brand and the screw position for site carpentry. Most of the 512 reviews are not marked United Kingdom. Buy the bottom-bolt layout if you will reject a unit whose blade still moves.

Pros

  • Bottom bolt is the stated design
  • Etched stainless blade
  • £12.70
  • One UK trade review praises the brand and the screw position

Cons

  • Four of seven UK reviews say it does not lock
  • Scale layout is not the same on both faces, in one review
  • Most of the 512 reviews are not marked United Kingdom

Best for: You want the Swanson bottom-bolt layout at £12.70 and you will reject a unit whose blade still moves.

Less suitable: You need a lock the UK reviews in this file agree on. They do not.

Jyinelx 9 inch bevel

Rank 12

Jyinelx 9 inch bevel

Our view

Jyinelx B0FDG1TJNV is £6.49 and 130 g, with 9 inches in the title and a centre knob in the bullets. amazon.co.uk shows 3.8 from 19 reviews, the lowest star line in this set. One UK review says the blade holds its angle. Another says the brass plates fell off, and one buyer returned a unit that fell to bits. The title and the graduation field say 9 inches, while the dimensions field says 22.9 by 22.9 cm, so the printed size is the title figure. You are in the cheap 9 inch group, and a return is already in the UK reviews if the brass comes away. It is a weak pick if you want several reviewers to agree that the lock is secure.

Pros

  • One UK review says it holds its angle
  • £6.49

Cons

  • Brass plates fell off, in UK reviews
  • One return because it fell to bits
  • Lowest star line in this set, 3.8 from 19

Best for: You are comparing the cheap 9 inch group and will return a unit whose brass comes off.

Less suitable: You want a lock several reviewers have called secure. The UK reviews include a return.

How we compared

Twelve amazon.co.uk listings are on this page. The score on each card starts from the star line on a 0–80 scale, so 4.6 becomes 74, then adds 5, 10 or 15 when the review count is 50 or higher. PRESCH at 4.6 from 1,014 reviews scores 89. That figure is not a lab error and not a British Standard result. The top pick is PRESCH 10209, the highest score. Best value is the Hilka 9 inch bevel at about £7.49, 4.5 from 311 reviews, score 82. The OX Trade tool also scores 82 and is not the value pick. The weights below are the buying checks, in the order used for this comparison. They do not alter the star-line score.

Sliding bevel buying guide

A sliding bevel copies an angle and holds it. Read the lock before the brand, then where that lock sits, then the blade length. Prices below are the amazon.co.uk figures stored for these twelve listings. The scores start from the star line on a 0–80 scale and add a small amount when the review count is higher. These bevels were not lab-tested.

What is a sliding bevel?

A sliding bevel, or T-bevel, copies an angle and holds it so you can mark timber or set a saw. UK buyers use one for stairs, skirting that is not square, and odd corners. A combination square still owns 90° and 45°. Quality is the lock. DIY Doctor says a wing nut that only closes the jaws is a weak stock, and Common Woodworking says the beam must not move. Finger-test the blade after you tighten it.

Best for

  • A first skirting or shelf job, if the lock on that unit holds
  • Internal corners, where the lock sits at the end of the stock
  • Bench layout, when the tool will not be carried up a roof

Not ideal for

  • A buyer who needs a measured angle error or a named British Standard
  • Using the tool as a protractor, or the OX vials as a site level
  • A new stair or new guarding, which belongs with building control

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Using it as a protractor

Find My Tool describes a sliding bevel as a template you transfer, not a degree scale. The Tonmifr stops at 20, 30, 45, 60 and 90 degrees are detents. The OX degree marks are called too small to set a chosen angle, in UK reviews. A 90° or 45° corner still belongs on a combination square.

  2. 2

    Trusting a broken listing field

hioseyre and Eophmi print 0–7 feet on a blade of about 22.8 cm. The OX dimensions field says 90 by 40 cm against a 200 mm title. Shinwa's Amazon field says 20 g beside a 250 mm stainless tool. Hilka's HDMI and processor lines are computer-category noise. Keep the title length and ignore those fields.

  3. 3

    Resetting the only bevel

Common Woodworking notes two bevels so one setting can stay put. If you reset the only tool, the copied angle is gone. Cut a scrap before finished skirting. A matched stair pitch does not meet Approved Document K. Height and the 100 mm sphere are separate checks.

What to weigh up

Lock

High

The blade must not move after you tighten it. DIY Doctor says a wing nut that only closes the jaws is a weak stock, and Common Woodworking says the beam must not move. UK reviews report a soft lock on the OX B0D2P8VF8Z, PRESCH B0CW9QRV1Q, Swanson B0083SGSNE and Shinwa B0016V7J9M. Four of seven UK reviews on the Swanson say the blade still moves or the screw will not tighten. Two Bahco reviews describe a thread that failed on first tightening.

Lock position and length

High

A centre nut fouls an internal corner. The Bahco 9574-300, about £35.94, puts the wing screw at the end of the stock, and UK reviews praise that for skirt mitres and alcoves. Swanson bullets put the bolt at the bottom so both sides stay usable; the UK reviews do not agree that it locks. MyToolShed's shop guide puts about 150–200 mm on fine work, about 200–250 mm as a general size, and about 250–300 mm on larger timber. This set runs from the OX at 200 mm to the Bahco at 300 mm.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

First skirting job

A first DIY skirting or shelf job sits in the under-£9 group if that unit's lock holds. The Hilka 9 inch bevel is best value at about £7.49, with 4.5 from 311 reviews. UK reviews say the mechanism locks tightly. The clean fields do not name the lock type, and one brass plate fell off.

Internal corners

A fitter who meets internal corners is the Bahco end-lock case. The 9574-300 is about £35.94, 300 mm, with the wing screw at the end of the stock. UK reviews use that for skirt mitres. Two reviews say the thread broke on first tightening, so return a stripped thread.

Bench layout

A bench woodworker who will not carry the tool up a roof is the Shinwa review pattern. The 62596 is about £18.90, stainless, with a 250 mm graduation field and 4.2 from 70 reviews. UK reviews use it on MDF, ply and a machine bed. The 20 g listing weight is not the tool.

Common questions about sliding bevels

Which sliding bevel is the top pick in 2026?
The top pick is the PRESCH 10209, at about £22.99. The card score is 89, from 4.6 and 1,014 amazon.co.uk reviews: 74 from the star line on a 0–80 scale, plus 15 for the review count. The listing includes 19 cm and 27 cm rulers, a knob and a pin. UK reviews praise the extra ruler. They also include a ruler that still moves when the knob is tight, and blades called flimsy. The score is not a lab test.
How much does a sliding bevel cost on amazon.co.uk?
Shelf prices in this set run from about £5.99 to £35.94. Entry, about £5.99 to £8.59, is Vorythm, Jyinelx, hioseyre, Eophmi, Hilka, OX and Dapetz. Mid, about £12.70 to £22.99, is Swanson at £12.70, Tonmifr at £17.99, Shinwa at £18.90 and PRESCH at £22.99. The top of this set is the Bahco 9574-300 at £35.94. A shop page for Bahco 9574-200, a different model, showed £24.61 including VAT. Stanley is not an ASIN here.
What should you check before you buy a sliding bevel?
Check the lock first. The blade must not move after you tighten it. Then check where the lock sits, because a centre nut fouls an internal corner. Then check blade length: about 150–200 mm for fine work, about 200–250 mm as a general size, and about 250–300 mm for larger timber, as a shop guide. Stock, vials, a second ruler or a scriber come after that. A soft lock is not fixed by an extra.
Does a sliding bevel replace a square?
No. A sliding bevel copies an existing angle. It is not a protractor, and it does not own 90° or 45°. A combination square still owns the square corner and the 45° mitre. That job is in the combination square comparison. The Tonmifr detents are stops at named angles, not a scale you can set to any number.
What blade length do you need?
MyToolShed's shop guide puts about 150–200 mm on fine work, about 200–250 mm as a general size, and about 250–300 mm on larger timber. PRESCH is sold as 19 cm and 27 cm rulers. Hilka, Swanson and Jyinelx are titled 9 inch. Vorythm has no blade length on the listing. Do not read a 0–7 feet line on a 22.8 cm blade as a long rule.
Does a sliding bevel here meet a British Standard?
No BS number for a sliding bevel turned up in these sources. Card scores are the amazon.co.uk star line on a 0–80 scale, plus a small amount for a higher review count. They are not a measured angle error. The Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 9, judges satisfactory quality against the description and the price. Which? states 30 days to reject, then repair or replacement. There is no plug, so BS 1363 is not the issue.
Can a sliding bevel check a stair?
It copies the pitch onto spindles and handrail ends. It does not check the gaps in Approved Document K. Paragraph 1.34 puts the handrail top at 900–1,000 mm from the pitch line. Paragraph 1.39 says guarding must stop a 100 mm sphere where children under five may use the building. Paragraph 1.9 uses the same sphere test for open risers in a dwelling. Call building control for a new stair or new guarding. A matched pitch is not those checks.
What if the blade will not stay locked?
Return a tool whose blade moves or whose thread has stripped. UK reviews report a soft lock on the OX, the PRESCH, the Swanson and the Shinwa, and two Bahco reviews describe a thread that failed. The Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 9, includes durability against the description and the price. Which? states 30 days to reject, then repair or replacement. Fold a pointed blade into the stock before the bag. No listing here promises a sheath.

Our verdict

The top pick is the PRESCH 10209 at about £22.99. It scores 89, from 4.6 and 1,014 amazon.co.uk reviews on the star-and-count method, with 19 cm and 27 cm rulers, a knob and a pin. UK reviews praise the extra ruler, and they also include a ruler that still moves when the knob is tight and blades called flimsy. Best value is the Hilka 9 inch bevel at about £7.49. It scores 82, from 4.5 and 311 reviews. UK reviews describe a mechanism that locks tightly, brass and varnished wood, and one brass plate that fell off. HDMI lines in the spec block are computer-category noise. The OX Trade tool also scores 82 and is not the value pick, because UK reviews include a blade that still moves and a horizontal vial that is out.
