How to use a folding rule

Updated: 22 October 2026

The number you transfer onto a saw mark will be wrong if one joint is still folded. Knowing how to use a folding rule is a straightness check, then a square look at the mark, then an inside size that does not pretend a brass slide is in the box. None of the folding rules in this amazon.co.uk set states that slide. The listings are on the [measuring stick comparison](/hub/measuring-and-marking-tools/measuring-stick). We used those listings and the UK review notes saved on 21 October 2026, and Schedule 1I. This is not a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Open it until it is actually straight

Open every joint in the span you are about to trust. A half-open link makes the path longer than the straight line, so the mark drifts. Lay the opened rule on the bench and look along it. The hinges should be seated, not hovering. If you can rock the middle, do not mark yet. The Amtech P5185 is the practical stop in this set. The bullets say the hinged sections lock into a straight edge. In the 50 UK reviews, people say the plastic is soft, bends, and will not sit flat. If yours does that, a second look will not average the curve away. A wooden rule can have the same fault from a half-open joint. Close it, open it until it locks, and only then read.

Read the mark square on

Count the small marks between the centimetre figures, with your eye square to the mark. A side view shifts the line by parallax, and on a 2 m rule that can move a saw cut. Touch the pencil while you are still looking square. Class III does not change the count. On Presch it is a stated tolerance of 1.4 mm at 2 m before joint allowance, at 20 °C, and it does not apply to wolfcraft, QWORK, SOL, or Amtech. Which length and class to buy is on the folding rule buying guide. wolfcraft does not state inches. If you wanted them, fetch a scale that shows them. QWORK states 1/16 inch as well as metric. Read one edge only.

Inside measurements without a brass slide

None of the six products states a sliding brass end. wolfcraft sells an internal-dimension adapter, model p_5223, separately. The included line on the wolfcraft 5227000 is one rule. Butt one square end into the opening, see the mark, then add only an offset you measured on that same rule. Do not borrow a 1 inch or 2 inch allowance from another article. Write the sum down before you move the rule. If the end is worn or covered by a cap you forgot, the shelf will not enter.

When the rule is finished

Retire the rule when it will not lie straight, when a section has snapped, or when the numbers you need have gone. In the 38 UK reviews on QWORK, more than one section broke within days or weeks. On wolfcraft, do not guess a centimetre figure if the paint has flaked. Call a fitter when the length will be sold, a kitchen run is in dispute, or a fall will be inspected. Do not raise the aluminium Firecore staff near overhead lines. HSE GS6 covers that risk. Do not invent a clearance.

Common questions

Do I open every joint before I trust the number?
Yes, for every joint that lies between the two points you are reading. A half-open hinge makes the path longer than the straight line, so the mark drifts even when the printing is sharp. Seat each joint, then look along the rule. If the middle rocks, do not mark yet. This applies to wood and to the Amtech plastic rule alike.
How do I read millimetres without parallax?
Put your eye square to the mark, not along the face of a thick link. Centimetre figures are the numbered steps, and the small marks between them are the millimetres. Touch the pencil while you are still square to the line you mean. Class III, where it is stated, is a tolerance on the rule. It does not change the way you count those marks.
How do I measure inside a cupboard if there is no brass slide?
Butt a square end against one side, see which mark meets the other side, and add only an offset you have measured on that same rule. None of these listings states a sliding brass end. wolfcraft's internal-dimension adapter is a separate product, and the rule's included line is one rule. Do not copy an inch allowance from a different article.
Can I draw a line with the Amtech rule?
Only if that particular stick lies flat. The bullets say the hinges lock straight. The UK reviews say the plastic bends and will not sit flat, so it is a poor straightedge. If yours curves in the middle, do not use it to draw the line. Use a rule that stays straight, or mark from a known straight edge.
What do I do if a QWORK section has snapped?
Stop using the full stated length. UK reviews include a section that broke within days or weeks. A leftover piece can mark a short distance if the remaining joints lock, and you should call that distance what it is, not 6 ft 6 in. Faded numbers are the same kind of stop: if the figure has gone, do not invent it.
When should I stop and call a fitter?
Call a fitter or the supplier when the length is being sold, when a fitted run is in dispute, or when an inspector will check a fall. A folding rule, even one that states class III, is not that certificate. Also stop if the stick will not lie straight. Near overhead lines, a metal levelling staff is the wrong thing to raise, and GS6 is the guidance to follow.
