5m or 8m tape measure

Updated: October 2026

A 5m or 8m tape measure is a choice of reach and bulk, not a quality ladder. Five metres covers many indoor jobs if you move the hook. Eight metres crosses a longer wall in one pull and usually means a wider case. Prices are on the [tape measure comparison](/hub/measuring-and-marking-tools/tape-measure). BuildWiz keeps a 5 m tape in the pocket and an 8 m tape for rooms. THS Concepts, a UK surveying practice, prefers the 5 m and a laser for long spans. The Tape Store calls 5 m its most popular UK length. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

When a 5 m tape is the one you carry

Choose 5 m when the tape lives in a pocket and the job has an edge you can re-hook: a door, a base unit, a worktop. The Tape Store treats 5 m as the everyday UK length. Class maths stay on the tape measure buying guide. The light rows are the Rolson 50535 at £2.38, 19 mm and 181 g; the Amazon Basics 5 m at £3.50 and about 200 g; and the PowerLock 0-33-553 at £9.51 and 209 g. The G4GADGET is £4.99 and 150 g. A 5 m FatMax is different: 0-33-719 is 390 g and 0-33-720 is 380 g, both 32 mm. That is width, not a lighter pocket.

When an 8 m tape earns the pocket space

Choose 8 m when one pull has to cross a longer wall and you are working alone. Moving a 5 m hook twice, past a radiator or a run of units, is where the additions go wrong. In this set the FatMax 0-33-726 is £18.78, 32 mm, with 3.3 m standout in the title and 4.6 from 4,743 reviews. The metric-only 0-33-728 is £20.04, with no standout in the file. The OX Trade twin is £9.99 for two 8 m tapes, 25 mm, Class 2, and no standout figure, if you accept a pack listed at 780 g. Who those picks are for, beyond length, is on the best tape measure UK page. A longer case does not stand out further by itself.

Weight is not just the extra 3 m

Three extra metres are not a fixed handful of grams. Tapes near 5 m and 19 mm cluster around 180–210 g: Rolson 181 g, pink Amazon Basics 180 g, Amazon Basics 5 m 200 g, PowerLock 209 g. The 32 mm 5 m FatMax tapes are 380 g and 390 g. Width moves the weight more than the extra length. The 8 m FatMax 0-33-726 and the metric 0-33-728 are both listed at 272 g, lighter than the 5 m FatMax rows. That is what the amazon.co.uk attributes say, and it is not smoothed into a guess. The OX twin at 780 g is the pack. The Amazon Basics 10 m is £8.80 and about 481 g, with no standout. Ten metres is the next step only when an 8 m pull still runs out.

A conditional pick

If you carry one tape for furniture and the odd longer wall, take the 8 m FatMax 0-33-726 and treat the 272 g listing as unverified. If the tape must live in a pocket, take a 19 mm 5 m model: the PowerLock at £9.51, or the Amazon Basics at £3.50. If you do both jobs often, own both. The OX twin puts two 8 m Class 2 tapes in a van for £9.99. At 481 g the 10 m Amazon Basics is the heaviest tape here. The page on how to use a tape measure shows how to add two 5 m pulls.

Common questions

Is 5 m enough to measure a room?
It is enough if you can move the hook and add the pulls. That covers doors, furniture and many rooms. It is awkward on a long wall where you cannot walk the second hook cleanly. The Tape Store calls 5 m the most popular length it sells in the UK. We are not stating a room size in metres as a fact.
When is 8 m worth the size?
It is worth the size when one pull has to cross a longer wall and you are working alone. In this set that points at the FatMax 0-33-726 at £18.78, with a 3.3 m standout in the title, or the OX twin at £9.99 for two 8 m Class 2 tapes with no standout stated. It is not worth the size if the tape must stay in a jeans pocket.
How much heavier is an 8 m tape?
Not by a fixed amount. The 19 mm tapes near 5 m are about 180–210 g. The 32 mm 5 m FatMax tapes are 380 g and 390 g. The 8 m FatMax listings say 272 g, which is lighter than those 5 m FatMax rows and is kept as printed. The OX pair is listed at 780 g for the pack. We did not weigh them.
Should I own both?
Own both if you pocket-measure doors and furniture and also pull longer walls. A light 5 m tape and one 8 m tape match the split in the UK guides above. One tape is enough if your work is only one of those jobs. The OX twin gives you two 8 m tapes and still leaves you without a 19 mm pocket tape.
Is 10 m the next step after 8 m?
Only if 8 m still runs out on jobs you repeat. The Amazon Basics 10 m is £8.80 and about 481 g, with a MID claim and no standout. It is the heaviest single tape in this set. A surveying practice in the sources prefers a laser for long spans. That tool is not in this comparison.
Does a longer tape stand out further?
Not by itself. Standout is how far the blade holds up, which tracks width more than the length in the case. A 5 m FatMax can claim 3.3 m of standout. An 8 m tape with no standout figure, such as the OX twin, does not become stiffer because it is longer. We did not measure standout.
