Post level vs spirit level

Updated: 22 October 2026

You already own a straight spirit level. The question is whether that beam can plumb a fence post, or whether a post level vs spirit level choice means buying a second tool. It can plumb the post if you have a spare hand and you check two adjacent faces. It cannot strap itself to the corner while you hold the timber and the brace. The post level is the small right-angle or folding body that does that one job. This page chooses a shape. The [post spirit level buying guide](/hub/measuring-and-marking-tools/post-spirit-level/sub/post-spirit-level-buying-guide) ranks strap, vials, and accuracy wording, and the [post spirit level comparison](/hub/measuring-and-marking-tools/post-spirit-level) holds the four stored prices. How to read the vials is [how to use a post level](/hub/measuring-and-marking-tools/post-spirit-level/sub/post-spirit-level-how-to-use). What each tool is for

A straight spirit level is a beam. You put an edge on the work, you read the centre vial for horizontal and the end vials for vertical, and you can turn it end for end to see whether the vial agrees with itself. Johnson Level’s general spirit-level page is that tool: the edge, the vials, and the reverse check. Nothing on that page straps the beam to a post. A post level is a short corner. Johnson’s post-level page describes a 90° plastic body, held by a band, so one tool sits on both faces. The bodies in this comparison are that shape: about 125 mm for the TIMCO corner and about 188 mm on the long side of the folding pack. They are not 600 mm or 1200 mm beams. Three vials on a post level are two plumb directions plus a level vial. Three vials do not make the short tool more accurate than a long level with a stated millimetre-per-metre grade. Accuracy is a tolerance with a length. A vial count is a count of directions you can see at once. If you only remember one difference, remember hands. The post level can stay put. The straight level needs you to hold it, unless it is a magnetic beam on bare steel, and even then it is still one face at a time.

When the long level wins

The long level wins when the length is the point. A fence panel around 1.8 m can bow between two posts that are each plumb. A 125 mm post level on the post will not show that bow, because it never touches the middle of the panel. The same is true of a rail. You want the beam along the rail, not a corner block at one end pretending to represent the run. Johnson’s reverse check belongs to this shape: mark the position, turn the level end for end, and the bubble should match, even if the surface itself is not level. That is how you catch a vial that has drifted, and it is easier on a straight beam than on a tiny folding frame. A post level’s printed figure, when it has one, is often a bare millimetre with no per metre. Do not borrow ±0.5 mm/m from a straight-level grade and stick it on these corner tools. The long level also wins when you already trust it and the job is a single post you can spare a hand for. You check one adjacent face, then the next, and you accept that you cannot brace and read in the same instant unless someone else is holding the post.

When the post level wins

The post level wins when you are alone and the post is still moving. The band holds the corner, both plumb vials face you, and your hands stay on the brace while the concrete is soft. A straight level can do the geometry. It cannot do the hands. Use the post level for the post, and keep the straight level for anything longer than the post’s corner. Pipe is a related case. A wrap or a folding body can sit on a pipe the way a flat beam cannot, though a magnetic box level with a V-groove is a different object and is not this tool. If you do not own the corner tool yet, buy it for the strap and for two stated plumb directions, not because a listing says three vials and therefore claims a tighter grade. Folding in 15° steps helps when the corner is not a clean right angle. It does not help you see a bowed panel. On timber and concrete the band is the reason the post level works at all. A magnet-only body is closer to a weak straight magnet than to a post tool, because it will not stay on the materials a UK fence is often made from.

What this is not

A magnetic spirit level from a UK tool page is usually a straight beam with magnets in the base and sometimes a V-groove for pipe. BuildWiz describes that object: box levels and torpedo levels, ferrous metal only. Shoppers mix the names because both say magnetic. They are not the same purchase. A magnetic box level still needs a hand or a flat face, and it still reads one plane unless you move it. A post level wraps the corner. Buying the box level because it is magnetic does not give you a strap-on post reader. A laser is a third category. It can throw a datum along a long run, and it is not one of the four listings here. If the post in your hands is the only question, the corner tool is the direct answer. A line over many metres belongs with a laser comparison, not with this shape choice. When the decision really is a post level, the best post spirit level page names which stored listing has the reviews, and which low price is only a price.

Common questions

Can I plumb a fence post with the spirit level I already own?
Yes, if you can hold it. Put the straight level on one face, centre the plumb vial, then move it to the adjacent face and do the same. You need a free hand, or a second person, because the level does not strap on. It works. It is slower while the concrete is soft, and it is easy to check one face and forget the other. A post level is the same geometry with the tool left in place.
What does the post level do that the long level does not?
It sits on the corner and stays there. A band or a magnet holds a short right-angle body so both plumb vials can be read with your hands on the post. The long level spans a length and can show bow. The post level frees your hands on a post that is still loose. It does not become a better level merely because the listing counts three vials.
Can a post level check a fence panel?
Not in any useful way. The post levels in this set are about 125 mm to 188 mm. A panel around 1.8 m can bow between two plumb posts, and a block on the post never touches that bow. Use the straight spirit level along the rail or the panel. Keep the post level on the post, where its shape matches the corner.
Is a magnetic spirit level the same as a magnetic post level?
No. A magnetic spirit level is typically a straight beam with magnets, sometimes with a V-groove for pipe. A magnetic post level is a corner or folding body meant to wrap a post. Both words say magnetic, and both still fail on timber and concrete unless there is a strap. If the listing is a box or a torpedo, you have not bought the wrap-around tool.
Do I need both?
You need both if you set posts and you also fit rails or panels. The post level holds the plumb reading while you brace. The straight level checks the run afterwards and shows a bow the short tool cannot see. If you only hang shelves, the post level adds nothing. If you only stand one post and someone else can hold a beam on it, you can manage without the corner tool.
Where does a laser fit, if at all?
A laser is another category. It can give you a datum along a long run, which neither a 125 mm post level nor a single hand-held beam does as easily on uneven ground. It does not strap to a post and tell you the concrete is still soft enough to nudge. Choose the laser when the line over many metres is the problem. Do not treat it as a third badge inside this comparison.
Is a post level more accurate because it has three vials?
No. Three vials mean two plumb directions and one level direction, so you can see both faces without moving the tool. Accuracy is a stated tolerance over a stated length, such as millimetres per metre. A corner tool that prints a bare ±0.5 mm has not given you that. More vials are more directions, not a tighter grade than your straight level.
