Climate measuring

Updated: October 2026Hub page

Climate measuring covers air quality monitor, hygrometer, mould test, thermometer, weather station with 3 outdoor sensors and window thermometer, and the other product types on the cards below. Each comparison says what that product is for, and which checks still apply when the listings change.

Once you have the product type, the comparison is where the current listings live. Shelf prices and makers stay there.

Common questions about climate measuring

What does an air quality monitor on this hub measure?
It is a small meter for PM2.5, carbon dioxide, a VOC or formaldehyde claim, and usually temperature and humidity. Prefer a stated NDIR or infrared CO2 sensor for ventilation, and a laser PM2.5 reading for smoke or dust. It is not a carbon monoxide alarm, a radon measurement, or a mould repair. Eleven amazon.co.uk listings run from about £16.99 to about £159.99. Nothing on that page was lab-tested.
What does a hygrometer tell you?
A hygrometer reports relative humidity: water vapour as a percentage of what the air could hold at that temperature. It does not remove moisture, and it does not replace extract ventilation. Twelve amazon.co.uk listings run from about £4.79 to about £160.99. On that page the top pick and the best value are the same listing, the TempPro TP157.
Is an infrared thermometer a fever thermometer?
An infrared thermometer reads heat from a surface. Forehead windows in that set sit around 32 °C to 43 °C. Gun tops are 400 °C, 550 °C, 600 °C or 1500 °C. A star rating does not turn a 600 °C gun into a baby thermometer. For illness, use the thermometer comparison: sticks, forehead units, ear models, and fridge dials.
What is a professional weather station in this set?
It is an outdoor array that measures wind and rain as well as temperature and humidity, with an indoor console that shows pressure. The ten stations cost about £94.99 to £309. They are hobby instruments. None is an official Met Office site. A mains lead needs a BS 1363 plug, and uploading consoles in the set need 2.4 GHz.
How is a weather station different from three outdoor sensors?
A weather station name covers a forecast console, with temperature, humidity, a clock and a pressure icon, and an array that adds rain and wind. A cloud icon is not a rain gauge. A weather station with 3 outdoor sensors is a console plus three battery transmitters for temperature and humidity. You use it for a greenhouse, a shed and a shaded wall. It does not measure wind or rain.
What should you check on a Wi-Fi thermometer or Wi-Fi weather station?
A Wi-Fi thermometer sends room temperature and humidity to a phone. Where a listing states a band, it is 2.4 GHz only. It does not keep a baby safe, and a humidity percentage does not diagnose damp. A Wi-Fi weather station also measures the garden. UK Ecowitt stock in that set is 868 MHz, and a forecast icon is still not a rain gauge. A mains adapter must suit 230 V and a BS 1363 plug.
Why can a window thermometer disagree with the forecast?
A window thermometer is a gauge on the glass so you can read the outdoor side from indoors. Sunlit plastic is not air temperature. The Met Office measures shaded air in a Stevenson screen at 1.25 m. Shade on the glass is the check. A room number, rather than the glass, belongs on the thermometer comparison.
