Best thermometer UK: a shortlist with conditions

Updated: October 2026

Best thermometer UK usually means a fever tool, and the NHS page that ranks for that kind of search recommends a method, not a model: a digital thermometer in the armpit for a child under five. This page is a shortlist from one amazon.co.uk set of 12, captured on 15 October 2026, with a condition for who should buy and who should skip. A high star rating on a stick, a gun, and an ear thermometer is three different answers. The full grid is the [thermometer comparison](/hub/climate-measuring/thermometer). There is no single best thermometer in this set

The largest rating files are not one type. The Berrcom stick has 4.4 from 31,605 ratings at £5.99. The femometer DET-306 forehead gun has 4.5 from 20,571 ratings at £14.99. The Braun ThermoScan 3 has 4.4 from 19,111 ratings at £21.17. Sorting those three by stars would hide the site each one measures. Products Compared did not lab-test them. The job framework is the thermometer buying guide. A colour screen is the brand’s own scale, not a fever decision. NICE guideline NG143, for clinicians, does not list non-contact guns for a child from birth to five. The adult NHS fever page says not to use an infrared thermometer, because some units do not meet UK regulations.

If the child is under five

The home method on the NHS baby-temperature page is a digital stick in the armpit, arm held in, for the time in the instructions. In this set that is a stick, not the ThermoScan 3 and not a forehead gun. On the Braun PRT2000 you select an age, then green, yellow, or red appears. Reviews say the display stays dark during that step. Skip it if you cannot see the age button. The femometer DMT-2032 includes a C cell and a case. The bullets say 10 seconds and the attribute table says 60. Follow the leaflet rather than the Amazon cell. The Berrcom’s rating count does not cancel flat cells on arrival, with no pull-tab, or one unit that took about 3 minutes and did not beep. It is a spare only after a fresh cell. The call list is on how to take a temperature.
femometer femometer DET-306

femometer femometer DET-306

If you want speed at night

A gun or an ear thermometer is a different site from the armpit. Use one when the child will not stay still, and keep the stick if the number will change what you do. The Braun ThermoScan 3 is in-ear, listed at 1 second, range 34 °C to 40 °C, with 21 hygiene caps. Reviews say the display does not light. One written set in the same ear is 36.1 °C, then 37.4 °C, then 36.7 °C. The age attribute says Adult while the bullets say babies. Skip it for a newborn if you cannot seat the tip, and skip it in the dark without a torch. The femometer DET-306 lists forehead, object, and room, up to 10 memories, and a three-colour screen. One of the first 50 reviews called it inaccurate and switched to an in-ear thermometer, with no degree figure. Skip it if you already do not trust forehead scans. The ANMEATE at £15.99 has a written 38.5 °C on a sweaty forehead against a normal ear reading. The hetaida at £16.99 has battery-door complaints, including trapped cells. The IndoTeam at £7.99 often arrived without batteries. The OxiPro TH1 at £19.99 lists ear and forehead, and ear mode needs the cap off.

Listings to skip for a fever check

Three rows do not belong in a fever shortlist. The Kevanry probe has 4.4 from 22 ratings and a stated span to 300 °C. That file is too thin for a kitchen pick, and it is not a baby thermometer. The PaYuanRaoTi wall pack has 3.5 from eight ratings, with broken units and readings stuck near 20–23 °C. The INRIGOROUS pair is a fridge and freezer dial. The OxiPro title’s Which? and award wording, and its ±0.15 °C bullet, are seller text. A bare CE cell is not the MHRA’s four-digit mark.

Common questions

What is the best thermometer in this UK set?
There is not one. For a child under five the NHS method is a digital stick in the armpit: the Braun PRT2000, the femometer DMT-2032, or the Berrcom, each with the limits above. The largest no-touch file is the femometer DET-306. The largest ear file is the Braun ThermoScan 3. We did not measure which unit is closest to a reference thermometer.
Which listing suits a child under five?
Start with a stick in the armpit, held for the leaflet time. The Braun PRT2000 at £10 adds an age colour if you can see the screen. The femometer DMT-2032 at £6.99 includes a cell, and the listing disagrees on 10 versus 60 seconds. The Berrcom is cheaper and the reviews are full of flat cells. An ear thermometer is the wrong first buy when the canal is small.
Why is the cheapest stick not automatically the best value?
The Berrcom is £5.99 with 31,605 ratings, which looks like value if you only divide price by stars. The reviews are dominated by cells that arrived low or dead, with no pull-tab. A unit you cannot switch on tonight is not the useful one. The femometer stick is £1 more and states that a C cell is included. Value here means a working cell and a time you can follow.
Should I trust the OxiPro ±0.15 °C line or the award in the title?
Treat both as seller text. The bullet states ±0.15 °C and prints a TÜV Süd report number. The title says Which? and a health-pharma award for 2026. We did not read a Which? score, and we did not repeat that accuracy test. Several of the first 50 reviews say the unit had not been used yet. The useful fact on the card is the four modes, including that ear mode needs the cap off.
What should I buy if the job is a fridge, not a fever?
Leave the clinical shortlist. The INRIGOROUS pair is the fridge and freezer dial, £6.99, with a bullet range of −30 °C to 30 °C. It does not store the coldest hour, and the two dials can disagree. A forehead gun’s room mode is not that check. The home target is 0 °C to 5 °C in the fridge and about −18 °C in the freezer.
