Fridge thermometer: fridge, freezer, and room

Updated: October 2026

The dial on the fridge door is not a measured air temperature. A fridge thermometer is for air around the food. A freezer needs its own check, around −18 °C. A greenhouse needs the temperature among the plants, including the overnight low if you are heating tender stock. This page stays with air and appliances, using GOV.UK, the Food Standards Agency, and the Royal Horticultural Society, plus listings from 15 October 2026. The grid is the [thermometer comparison](/hub/climate-measuring/thermometer). We did not lab-test the dials. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

The temperatures you are actually checking

For a home fridge, GOV.UK says 0 °C to 5 °C, checked with a fridge thermometer about once a week, and a freezer around −18 °C. Food businesses in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland must keep chilled food at 8 °C or below. That duty is described as recommended in Scotland. Do not treat 8 °C as the target for your kitchen fridge. Cooking is a different number. The Food Standards Agency uses 70 °C for 2 minutes in the centre, with a clean probe. Safer Food, Better Business says an infrared thermometer can read a cold surface and cannot check that centre. Clinical types are separated in the thermometer buying guide.

The fridge and freezer dials in this set

The fridge tool here is the INRIGOROUS pair, two stainless dials at £6.99 with 4.3 from 2,592 ratings. The bullets give −30 °C to 30 °C. The attribute upper rating is 86 °F, so the top of the scale is not consistent. A hook and a stand are included. There is no memory, so the coldest hour is not stored. Power is a contradiction to leave standing. The attribute table says battery powered, the bullets say you do not replace a battery, and one review says the cell is not accessible. A listed 0.5-second response is an odd figure on an analogue dial. Reviews use the dial when the fridge’s own control has no degrees. The two dials in a pack can sit about 3 degrees apart. Zones named in reviews have no instruction sheet, and a cold fridge can still sit in a red zone that suits a freezer. A needle came loose after about two months in a freezer. If food then freezes because you chased the dial, the dial was the faulty one.

A wall dial for a room or a greenhouse

The PaYuanRaoTi listing is four wall thermometers at £6.59, with 3.5 from eight ratings. There is no stated range. The bullets say a battery-free bimetal coil for a greenhouse, shed, or room. This is not a maximum-minimum thermometer. A spot reading cannot tell you the coldest hour unless you were there. Units arrived broken. Readings stayed near 20–23 °C in a greenhouse, a fridge, and a freezer, including against a forecast of 16–17 °C, with no adjustment. One review describes a red-liquid tube rather than the listed dial. Buy the pack only as a spare you will compare with a thermometer that already moves. The Royal Horticultural Society says a maximum-minimum thermometer belongs in the middle of the greenhouse, near the plants, because a thermostat by the heater can be out by a few degrees. Many tender plants need about 5 °C in winter. An afternoon glance does not capture the night.

What not to use, and a check you can repeat

A no-touch room mode is a spot reading. It will not remember 3 a.m. in the greenhouse, and it will not see the centre of a chicken. The only centre-of-food tool in this set is the Kevanry talking probe, at £9.99 with 4.4 from 22 ratings, a stated range of −50 °C to 300 °C, and a bullet of ±0.8 °C. It speaks the number and resets to Fahrenheit in reviews. Leave it out of the fridge air check. Once a week, read the INRIGOROUS dial after it has settled. You want 0 °C to 5 °C in the fridge and around −18 °C in the freezer. If the pair disagree by about 3 degrees, do not average them. Ice where there should be chill means the dial that said warm may be the faulty one. In a greenhouse, use a maximum-minimum thermometer among the plants, not a spot reading at 4 p.m.

Common questions

What temperature should a fridge and a freezer be in the UK?
GOV.UK’s home chilling guide says a fridge between 0 °C and 5 °C, checked about once a week, and a freezer around −18 °C. Cooking to 70 °C for 2 minutes in the centre is a different job and needs a probe. A forehead gun does not store a fridge minimum, and it cannot see the centre of food.
Is 8 °C legal for a home fridge?
The 8 °C line is a food-business rule in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. GOV.UK describes it as recommended in Scotland, not the same legal duty. For your own kitchen, use 0 °C to 5 °C. A home fridge at 8 °C is warmer than that advice.
Does the INRIGOROUS pair need batteries, and does it remember the coldest hour?
The listing contradicts itself on power. The attribute says battery powered, the bullets say no replacement, and one review says the cell is not accessible. It has no memory field, so it does not remember the coldest hour. You only know the temperature while you are looking at the needle. The 0.5-second response time on the attribute table is not a reason to call this a fast digital thermometer.
Will a wall dial tell me the overnight low in a greenhouse?
No. The PaYuanRaoTi four-pack is a spot dial, with eight ratings and no stated range. Reviews describe readings stuck near 20–23 °C. A maximum-minimum thermometer is what the RHS tells you to place among the plants. A glance at 4 p.m. does not tell you what happened at 3 a.m.
Can a no-touch room mode check that food is cooked?
No. Infrared reads a surface. Safer Food, Better Business says that kind of thermometer cannot confirm the centre of cooked food. You need a clean probe in the middle, for example to 70 °C for 2 minutes. In this set that probe is the Kevanry, with 22 ratings and a stated ceiling of 300 °C. A room mode and a fridge dial are not substitutes.
