How to set up a Wi-Fi weather station

Updated: October 2026

The first week’s numbers are often the site, not a broken sensor. This page is how to set up a Wi-Fi weather station in order: site the rain, keep the wind off the roof until you can work safely, pair on the table, then join 2.4 GHz. The Products Compared editorial team used public UK siting guidance and amazon.co.uk reviews from 15 October 2026. There was no laboratory test. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. The [Wi-Fi weather station comparison](/hub/climate-measuring/wifi-weather-station) is the hardware.

Put the rain and the temperature where they can breathe

The Royal Meteorological Society puts a tipping-bucket rim ideally 30 cm above short grass, truly level, with obstacles at least twice their height away. A spirit level is the check. Temperature wants that same open air, not a sunlit wall. The Ecowitt WS3901 uses a haptic rain sensor, not a bucket. Ecowitt says some periods can deviate, and the heater will not melt a cap of snow. A UK review of the Ambient WS-1965 says the rain figure defaults to an hourly rate until you set the day total.

Give the wind height, and stop at the roof

Observers use 10 metres as the wind standard. A garden mast at 2 metres will read less, and you should not multiply the number up. The Royal Meteorological Society says not to apply that correction. Record the height you used. Roof and chimney fixings, and any ladder you cannot foot, belong to a roofer. A new outdoor spur belongs to an electrician. Open-field claims of 100 m are open air. One GW3002 user needed the gateway about 13 m from the array.

Pair the sensor, then join 2.4 GHz

Put the console and the outdoor unit on the kitchen table, fit the cells the listing says are missing, and wait until outdoor temperature appears. Most boxes do not include batteries. The Chatthen includes six AAA cells, and that indoor unit still wants mains. Then move the array to a window and check that the number survives the wall. Wi-Fi is the second join, and it is 2.4 GHz. A 5 GHz-only network will not appear, and the station is not dead. UK reviews of the Raddy, the ACCUR8 A8-DWS5100, the WS3901, and the Chatthen run into that limit.

What to check in the first week

Level the tipping bucket again after you tighten the mast, and read the rain as a daily total beside a jam-jar for seven wet days. Do not scale a low gust toward a 10 metre standard. If the pole was not in the box, that matches UK reviews of the WS2910. Stop at the roof, an unfooted ladder, or a new spur. Public upload is on the Met Office WOW page. What the box should contain is on the buying guide. A band mismatch is on the Ecowitt vs Ambient page.

Common questions

Where should the rain gauge sit in a UK garden?
Follow the Royal Meteorological Society note: tipping-bucket rim ideally 30 cm above short grass, truly level, obstacles at least twice their height above the rim away. A 2 m shed wants about 4 m of clear ground. Under a tree, beside a wall, or on a sloping deck will bias the total. Temperature belongs in that same moving air, not on a south-facing board. A haptic array has no bucket to level. Keep it out of the drip line of a roof.
Should the array be paired indoors first?
Yes. On the kitchen table you can see the outdoor temperature arrive before any bracket is involved. Fit the cells, because most listings in this set do not include them. When the console shows the outdoor number, take the array outside the window and confirm the link still holds. A failure at that point is radio range or a band mismatch, not a Wi-Fi fault. The open-field claim of 100 m is not a promise through brick.
Why will the console not see the router?
These consoles join 2.4 GHz. A 5 GHz-only SSID is invisible to them, and UK reviews of the Raddy, the ACCUR8 A8-DWS5100, the WS3901, and the Chatthen say so. The ACCUR8 instructions told the reviewer to use 2.4 GHz. Create a 2.4 GHz network and try again before you reset the outdoor sensor. A screen that already shows outdoor readings does not need Wi-Fi for those local numbers.
What if the pole was not in the box?
That is normal for several of these listings. UK reviews of the WS2910 and the WS-2000 say the pole was a separate buy. Measure what the collar needs. A WS3901 review says the diameter has to be checked, and the listing does not print it. A garden post you can reach is the right first mast.
When should a roofer or an electrician take over?
A roofer takes chimney bands, roof anchors, and any ladder you cannot foot. An electrician takes a new outdoor socket or a spur. You can set a ground post and pair a battery console without either trade. Call a professional as well if the number is for a formal drainage or planning argument. A hobby station is not an official observation. Do not scale a low wind reading up to 10 metres to make that argument.
