What to look for in an air quality monitor

Updated: October 2026

You already know which room is the problem: a shut bedroom, a smoky kitchen, or a corner that smells damp. An air quality monitor only helps if the sensor matches that job. A longer feature title does not repair a missing sensor, and a 5.0 from two amazon.co.uk reviews is not the same fact as a 4.4 from 748. This page sets the criteria for the 11 listings in our [air quality monitor comparison](/hub/climate-measuring/air-quality-monitor), with shelf prices from about £16.99 to about £159.99 on 15 October 2026. Products Compared did not run a lab test.

Name the job before the feature count

Start with the question you will ask the screen, not the number of functions in the title. Particles are the job when you fry, burn a candle or open a stove door. Carbon dioxide is the job when a bedroom or home office has been shut. Humidity watches a room you already suspect is damp, and the number does not repair the leak. The meter that does not list the sensor cannot answer the question. A laser PM2.5 meter can stay calm while carbon dioxide climbs. The Temtop S1 does not list CO2, so it suits the pan and not a shut room. One top pick and one best-value pick are on the best air quality monitor in this set.

Read the CO2 sensor type

If the job is fresh air, read the sensor words before the price. In this set only the BREATHE Airmonitor Plus Gen 2, about £99.99, states NDIR CO2, paired with a laser particle sensor. HSE says the most appropriate portable monitors for workplace CO2 checks are NDIR. Approved Document F Volume 2 says that where CO2 monitors are used in specified new non-domestic rooms they should be NDIR and mains powered. That note is for those rooms, not a rule for an existing flat. The other wordings are not interchangeable. Bekasa, about £16.99, states electrochemical CO2 and averages 3.1 from 199 reviews. MOESAPU, about £79.99, states infrared CO2 from 0 to 9999 ppm and has 4.0 from one review. Infrared on that page is not the NDIR sentence on the BREATHE listing. Nobito, DisRun, GoHelmate and the Temtop M100 2nd claim CO2 without stating the type. Five of Nobito’s thirteen functions are a clock, not pollutants.

Power, sampling and the review count

A bright screen left on all day is a mains device in practice. BREATHE states up to 6 hours, then USB-C. Nobito states 6–7 hours. MOESAPU states over 10 hours on 1500 mAh. The Temtop S1 and S1-up state ECO mode at up to 60 days and A mode at up to 20 days. UK reviewers say that ECO interval misses a short spike, so use live mode or leave the cable in for a five-minute fry-up. A 4.4 from 748 on the S1 outranks a 5.0 from one, two or seven reviews. The Amazon saved listing has no star line.

What this meter is not

A consumer air quality monitor is not a carbon monoxide alarm, a UK radon test or a damp repair. England’s landlord duty, from 1 October 2022, is a proper alarm in rented living accommodation with a fixed combustion appliance other than a gas cooker. If you suspect carbon monoxide, contact a Gas Safe registered engineer. UKHSA’s radon action level is an annual average of 200 Bq/m³, and none of these meters is that test. If the wall is damp, the moisture has to be fixed. A maker’s green light is not the Defra Daily Air Quality Index, and a one-minute cooking spike is not a 24-hour mean. A stove is a particle job with a separate alarm, on the air quality monitor for a wood burner page. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Common questions

What should you check before you buy an air quality monitor?
Name the job first: particles, a fresh-air check, humidity, or a phone routine. Then read whether the listing states that sensor, how it is powered, and how many amazon.co.uk reviews sit behind the stars. A feature count in the title does not replace a named sensor. Prices in this set run from about £16.99 to about £159.99. A green lamp on the box art is the maker’s scale.
Is an electrochemical CO2 sensor the same as NDIR?
No. In this set Bekasa states electrochemical CO2, MOESAPU states infrared CO2, and BREATHE states NDIR. HSE points to NDIR for portable workplace CO2 checks. Treat the three wordings as different claims. An unstated CO2 line, which is what Nobito, DisRun, GoHelmate and the Temtop M100 2nd give you, is a weaker claim again, because you cannot tell which method you are buying from the bullets.
Why do some meters only last a few hours away from USB?
Continuous colour screens in this set often state about 6–10 hours, then USB. BREATHE states up to 6 hours, Nobito 6–7 hours, and MOESAPU over 10 hours on a 1500 mAh battery. The Temtop S1’s 60-day ECO figure is a slower sampling interval, not a bright live screen all day. Use live mode, or leave the meter plugged in, while you cook.
Does the Amazon Smart Air Quality Monitor measure CO2?
The listing’s five factors are PM2.5, volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, humidity and temperature. CO2 is not one of them. It can drive an Alexa routine for a purifier or a dehumidifier. That routine does not tell you whether a shut bedroom needs fresh air. The saved listing also has no star line, so there is no rating to quote. Formaldehyde is not named separately from VOC.
Is a 5.0 from two reviews better evidence than a 4.4 from 748?
The 4.4 from 748 reviews, on the Temtop S1, is the stronger evidence. Nobito’s 5.0 rests on two reviews, GoHelmate’s on one, and DisRun’s on seven. A small sample can be all fives because almost nobody has reported a fault yet. Read the count beside the stars. A perfect average on a new listing does not outrank a large file with a slightly lower average.
