Barometers comparison 2026

The best barometers, compared.

Top pick: William Widdop wooden barometer with gold metal bezel Best value: Esschert Design crystal barometer with cast-iron stand, TH31 – About £28.14 with 4.6 from 1,492 reviews, if a water level is the reading you want. Updated October 2026.

A household barometer in the UK is usually an aneroid dial that shows atmospheric pressure. A water weather glass is the decorative alternative, and you read a level. People buy one for a hallway, a study, or a gift, to see whether pressure is rising or falling. A word such as is a printed position on the dial. The Met Office reports mean sea-level pressure in hectopascals (hPa), the same numbers as millibars. A new mercury barometer is the wrong buy. Restricts placing mercury measuring devices, including barometers, on the market. Two or three ratings are a weak sample. The [best barometers](/hub/climate-measuring/barometers/sub/barometers-best) page matches each listing to a hallway dial, a cheap three-in-one, a weather glass, or a brass gift. A household barometer shows atmospheric pressure so you can see whether it is rising or falling. That means an aneroid dial, or a water weather glass. A sealed storm glass is a different object, and digital weather stations with a pressure chip sit in other categories. An aneroid uses a capsule and a needle.

The best barometers in detail

William Widdop wooden barometer with gold metal bezel

Rank 1

William Widdop wooden barometer with gold metal…

∼£36

Our view

The William Widdop W8019 is a mechanical wall barometer in a dark-wood frame with a gold-coloured metal bezel. The listing says indoor use, wall mounting, and no batteries. Amazon.co.uk shows 5.0 out of 5, but that score rests on three reviews, and the page is ranked 1 in Barometers. Pressure scale, thermometer and hygrometer are not stated, so you cannot tell from the listing whether this is a pressure-only dial. The size lines also conflict: one says 25 cm by 25 cm and another says 18.5 cm. Weight is 424 g, the shape is rectangular, and the origin is China. At about £35.99 it sits with the mid-priced three-in-one dials, yet the page gives you less measured detail than those listings.

Pros

  • Mechanical wall barometer, and batteries are not included
  • Dark wood frame with a gold-coloured metal bezel
  • 5.0 out of 5 on amazon.co.uk, and ranked 1 in Barometers

Cons

  • The 5.0 score is from only three reviews
  • Pressure scale, thermometer and hygrometer are not stated
  • Two size lines disagree: 25 cm by 25 cm and 18.5 cm

Best for: You want a simple indoor wooden wall barometer and you are content to judge the unmarked scale in person.

Less suitable: You need a stated pressure range, a thermometer or hygrometer, or a score based on more than three reviews.

Common questions

Does the William Widdop barometer need batteries?

No. Batteries are not included and the operation mode is mechanical. The listing gives indoor use and a wall mount.

Can it be wall-mounted?

Yes. Mounting type is wall mount, and the use line says indoor. Weight is 424 g. The two size lines, 25 cm by 25 cm and 18.5 cm, do not agree.

How many reviews are behind the 5.0 score?

The listing line is 5.0 out of 5 from 3 reviews. That is a weak sample. Pressure scale, thermometer, and hygrometer are not stated on the page.

Voyoo metal-framed analogue barometer with thermometer and hygrometer

Rank 2

Voyoo metal-framed analogue barometer with…

∼£15

Our view

The Voyoo CP145890 is the lowest-priced dial in this set, at about £14.99, and the listing describes a mechanical three-in-one with a barometer, a thermometer and a hygrometer, and no batteries. The bullets claim a thermometer from −30 to 50 °C and a hygrometer from 0 to 100% relative humidity, and they say you can use it indoors or outdoors. Amazon.co.uk shows 5.0 out of 5 from two reviews. The page was first listed on 12 January 2026, the weight is 160 g, and the parcel measures 18.5 × 18 × 5.3 cm. Diameter, pressure scale, mounting and a reference pointer are not stated. Ranked 3 in Barometers, it is a light metal-framed dial, and the perfect score sits on a very small review sample.

Pros

  • Barometer, thermometer and hygrometer, with no batteries
  • Listing claims −30 to 50 °C and 0–100% relative humidity
  • About £14.99, and the title says indoor or outdoor

Cons

  • 5.0 out of 5 from only two reviews, first listed on 12 January 2026
  • Diameter, pressure scale and mounting are not stated
  • At 160 g it is a light case with very little UK feedback

Best for: You want a cheap battery-free three-in-one dial and you can accept a new listing with two reviews.

Less suitable: You need a stated pressure scale, a known diameter, or a score from more than a handful of UK reviews.

Common questions

Does this dial need batteries?

The bullets say the mechanical movement needs no batteries. The listing describes a barometer, a thermometer, and a hygrometer on one face.

What is the diameter?

The listing does not give a diameter. Parcel size is 18.5 × 18 × 5.3 cm and weight is 160 g. Pressure scale and mounting are not stated either.

Does the listing say outdoor?

Yes. The title and bullets say indoor and outdoor. Treat that claim cautiously on a 160 g dial: the side dials read the air around the case. The page was first listed on 12 January 2026, with 5.0 from two reviews.

Esschert Design crystal barometer with cast-iron stand, TH31

Rank 3

Esschert Design crystal barometer with cast-iron…

∼£28

Our view

The Esschert Design TH31 is a water weather glass, so you read the water level in a glass vessel on a cast-iron stand rather than a numbered dial, and you add the water yourself. Reviews describe a syringe and colouring in the box. The listing gives cast iron and glass, a weight of 918 g, and dimensions of about 12 × 13.9 × 27.7 cm. There is no thermometer, no hygrometer and no reference pointer. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.6 out of 5 from 1,492 reviews, far more feedback than any dial here, at about £28.14. The spec line says indoor, while reviewers often hang it outside and then mention wind, dirt and algae. A power-source line says battery powered, which conflicts with batteries not included and with a water-filled glass.

Pros

  • 4.6 out of 5 from 1,492 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • Cast-iron stand and glass vessel, with no numbered dial to set
  • About £28.14, and reviewers describe a syringe and colouring

Cons

  • You read a water level, not a numbered hPa or inHg dial
  • No thermometer and no hygrometer
  • The spec says indoor; outdoor reviewers mention wind, dirt and algae

Best for: You want a traditional weather glass for indoors, and you are happy to fill it and read the water rather than a scale.

Less suitable: You need a numbered pressure reading, temperature and humidity, or an instrument the listing clearly classes as outdoor.

Common questions

What is it made of?

The listing says cast iron and glass. Weight is 918 g, and the dimensions are about 12 × 13.9 × 27.7 cm. You add the water yourself.

Does it need batteries?

Batteries included is no. Reviews describe filling the glass with water, and some mention a syringe and colouring. A power-source line that says battery powered conflicts with that.

Does the spec say indoor?

Yes. The use line says indoor. Reviewers often hang it outside and then mention wind, dirt and algae. Temperature moves the water level as well as pressure.

Youshiko traditional barometer, mahogany wood surround

Rank 4

Youshiko traditional barometer, mahogany wood…

∼£50

Our view

The Youshiko is a battery-free aneroid barometer in a glossy wood surround with a brushed brass bezel, listed for hanging indoors. The bullets give you a scale of 28.3–31.7 inHg, or 960–1070 mb, and the box list includes an adjustment tool plus screws and dowels. It does not add a thermometer or a hygrometer, and a reference pointer is not stated. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.4 out of 5 from 67 reviews, the largest sample among the dial barometers here. One reviewer reported missing fixings. The size lines disagree: the bullets say about 8.5 in overall with a 6.25 in dial and 2 in depth, while the spec table prints 5.1 × 5.1 × 5.1 cm. At about £49.99 and 760 g it is a traditional pressure-only wall piece, with China given as the origin.

Pros

  • Stated scale of 960–1070 mb and 28.3–31.7 inHg
  • 4.4 out of 5 from 67 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • Adjustment tool, screws and dowels are listed in the box

Cons

  • Barometer only: no thermometer and no hygrometer
  • The bullet size and the spec-table size do not match
  • One reviewer reported missing fixings

Best for: You want a traditional indoor wall barometer with a stated millibar scale and a larger UK review sample.

Less suitable: You also want temperature and humidity on the same dial, or a size you can take from one consistent listing line.

Common questions

Does the Youshiko barometer need batteries?

No. The listing says analogue functioning and no battery needed. The box list is an adjustment tool, screws and dowels, and a manual.

What pressure scale does it show?

The bullets state 28.3–31.7 inHg or 960–1070 mb. That millibar range is the one you can set against a Met Office sea-level figure on a calm day.

Can it be hung on a wall?

Yes. The listing includes mounting screws and dowels and describes hanging in a hallway or room. One reviewer reported missing fixings, so check the packet before you drill.

Candeon 3-in-1 barometer, thermometer and hygrometer, 130 mm

Rank 5

Candeon 3-in-1 barometer, thermometer and…

∼£25

Our view

The Candeon is an aluminium-alloy three-in-one dial, about 130 mm across, with a gold face, a barometer, a thermometer and a hygrometer, and no batteries. The listing says you can use it indoors and outdoors, and that it can sit flat or hang. Weight is 196 g. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.3 out of 5 from eight reviews, a small sample at about £24.83. The size wording is slightly loose: the spec says 130 mm or 5.12 inches, while the title also says 5 inch. Temperature notes on the page print both 1 °C and ±0.5 °C, plus an upper rating of 35 °C, so you do not get one clear accuracy figure. A pressure scale and a reference pointer are not stated.

Pros

  • About 130 mm aluminium three-in-one with no batteries
  • Listed for indoor and outdoor use, flat or hanging
  • 4.3 out of 5 from eight amazon.co.uk reviews at about £24.83

Cons

  • Pressure scale and a reference pointer are not stated
  • Temperature accuracy is printed two ways: 1 °C and ±0.5 °C
  • Eight reviews is still a small sample

Best for: You want a compact gold-faced three-in-one you can hang or stand, including on a covered outdoor spot the listing names.

Less suitable: You need a stated millibar scale, one clear accuracy figure, or a large body of UK reviews.

Tabic brass barometer with hygrometer and thermometer on an English oak mount

Rank 6

Tabic brass barometer with hygrometer and…

∼£280

Our view

The Tabic is a brass barometer with a hygrometer and a thermometer on an English oak mount. The listing says it is handmade in England and that you use it indoors on a tabletop. The page gives about 210 mm by 70 mm and a weight of about 1 kg, with a lacquered brass case. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.1 out of 5 from five reviews, and the two written reviews on the page are from the United States, so the UK sample is thin for a piece at about £279.90. Batteries are not included, but the power line also says battery powered and mechanical, so that detail is inconsistent. Nautical styling and a boat question appear on the page, yet no marine specification is stated. A pressure scale and a reference pointer are not stated either.

Pros

  • Brass case on an English oak mount, and the listing says handmade in England
  • Barometer, hygrometer and thermometer on a tabletop piece
  • About 1 kg and 210 mm by 70 mm, heavier than the wall dials

Cons

  • About £279.90, with 4.1 out of 5 from only five reviews
  • The two written reviews on the page are from the United States
  • The power line conflicts, and no marine specification is stated

Best for: You want a heavy brass-and-oak tabletop three-in-one for indoors, and you are buying the materials and the handmade claim.

Less suitable: You want a stated pressure scale, a wall dial, a marine-rated instrument, or a score from a large UK review sample.

Does it need batteries?

Batteries included is no. The listing also prints battery powered and mechanical, so the power line is inconsistent. A pressure scale and a reference pointer are not stated.

Can it be used on a boat?

The listing asks the question and uses nautical styling. It does not state a marine specification. Use on the spec line is indoor, and mounting is tabletop. Check that the wall or shelf can take about 1 kg.

Classic analogue 3-in-1 barometer, thermometer and hygrometer, aged bronze

Rank 7

Classic analogue 3-in-1 barometer, thermometer and…

∼£36

Our view

This aged-bronze wall dial gives you an aneroid barometer, a thermometer and a hygrometer in one indoor instrument, and the listing says it needs no batteries. A manually adjustable reference needle lets you mark the pressure you last read, which is the practical part of a mechanical dial. The case is metal, weighs 490 g, and is sold under a generic brand with QH named as the manufacturer. Amazon.co.uk shows 3.9 out of 5 from six reviews, and those reviews flag the word Weeper on the face. The specification line says indoor, so the page does not class it as an outdoor instrument. At about £35.99 you get the three readings and a settable pointer, with only a small UK review sample behind the score.

Pros

  • Barometer, thermometer and hygrometer on one indoor wall dial
  • Manually adjustable reference needle so you can mark the last pressure
  • No batteries; the listing describes a mechanical movement

Cons

  • 3.9 out of 5 from only six amazon.co.uk reviews
  • UK reviews flag the word Weeper on the dial
  • The specification line says indoor, so it is not classed as an outdoor instrument

Best for: You want a battery-free indoor wall dial that shows pressure, temperature and humidity, with a needle you can set yourself.

Less suitable: You want an outdoor instrument, or a named brand with a larger UK review sample.

Common questions

Does this barometer need batteries?

The listing says no. Power is manual and the sensor line says mechanical. You get a barometer, a thermometer, and a hygrometer on one indoor wall dial.

Is there a pointer you can set?

Yes. The bullets describe a manually adjustable reference needle so you can mark the current pressure. That pointer records the last reading. It does not calibrate the capsule.

Can you hang it outside?

The specification line says indoor. The listing asks about outdoor use but does not class it as an outdoor instrument. UK reviews also flag the word Weeper on the face. The score is 3.9 from six reviews.

How we compared

The scores on this page compare the seven amazon.co.uk listings kept in the category. Prices, stars, and review counts are the figures saved on 19 October 2026. Public UK sources cover sea-level pressure, how to set a household aneroid, and the mercury controls. There is no laboratory test, and none of these dials is scored against a 0.3 hPa station tolerance. The weights below sum to 100.

1

Type and pressure scale

30%

An aneroid with a stated hectopascal or millibar scale ranks above a dial that leaves the scale unstated, and above a water weather glass when the job is to compare a number with the forecast.

2

Adjustment and set pointer

20%

A rear screw and a separate set pointer are how you match a calm-day Met Office observation and then watch the next change. The pointer marks the last reading. It does not calibrate the capsule.

3

Review evidence

25%

Stars are read with the review count. Two or three ratings are a weak sample. A large amazon.co.uk count carries more weight than a perfect score on a new listing.

4

Case and listing clarity

15%

A misprinted weather word, conflicting sizes, a thin case, or missing fixings come off the score. Thermometer and hygrometer claims are kept as room readings, and outdoor lines on a light dial are treated cautiously.

5

Price for the job

10%

Shelf price is judged against what the listing actually states: a numbered scale, a three-in-one face, or a weather glass you fill yourself. A high price with a handful of reviews does not buy a station instrument.

Barometer buying guide

You are choosing a household pressure instrument for a hallway, a study, or a gift. Start with the type, then the units, then whether a screw on the back can move the needle. The seven amazon.co.uk listings on this page were priced on 19 October 2026, from about £14.99 to about £279.90. A word printed under the needle is a position on the dial. The forecast is the Met Office observation you set the aneroid to. See the [buying guide](/hub/climate-measuring/barometers/sub/barometers-buying-guide).

What is a household barometer?

A household barometer shows atmospheric pressure so you can see whether it is rising or falling. In this set that means an aneroid dial, or a water weather glass. A sealed FitzRoy storm glass is a different object, and digital weather stations with a pressure chip sit in other categories. An aneroid uses a capsule and a needle. Prefer a scale in hectopascals or millibars. Inches can sit beside them. A usual envelope is about 950–1050 hPa.

Best for

  • A hallway or study where you want to see pressure rise or fall
  • A gift when the case, the print, and the wall suit the recipient

Not ideal for

  • A new mercury barometer, or a retail dial treated as a Met Office station
  • Measuring rainfall, or trusting an outdoor claim on a light indoor dial

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

Treating the set pointer as calibration

The set pointer marks the last reading so you can see the next change. The rear screw is what you turn, on a calm day, to the latest Met Office sea-level pressure. A light tap, and the same orientation each time, belong with that setting.

  2. 2

    Mixing inches and hectopascals

1013 hPa is about 29.92 inches. Divide hPa by 33.86 if the face is in inches. Comparing a millibar observation with an inch reading, without converting, makes a correct dial look wrong.

  3. 3

    Hanging a three-in-one over a radiator

The thermometer and hygrometer read the air around the case. An interior wall, away from radiators and sun, is the place. A misprinted weather word is a buying fault, and it is not the forecast.

What to weigh up

Type and pressure scale

High

An aneroid is the instrument to buy when you want a pressure you can compare with the forecast. A capsule moves a needle across a scale. Prefer hectopascals or millibars. Inches can sit on the same face. Divide hPa by 33.86, so 1013 hPa is about 29.92 inches. A usual household envelope is about 950–1050 hPa. In this set only the Youshiko states that range: 960–1070 mb, also printed as 28.3–31.7 inHg. The aged-bronze dial is marked inHg/kPa.

Setting, case, and reviews

High

Set the aneroid on a calm day to the latest Met Office sea-level pressure, with a small turn of the rear screw, a light tap, and the same orientation each time you read it. The Royal Meteorological Society describes that method. The set pointer marks the last reading so you can see the change. It does not calibrate the instrument. Pressure falls by about 1 hPa per 10 metres near the ground, which is why the Met Office reduces station readings to mean sea level.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Hallway glance

You want a wood aneroid you can read as you pass, with a millibar scale you can set to the Met Office figure. The Youshiko states 960–1070 mb, includes an adjustment tool, and has 4.4 from 67 reviews. A set pointer is not stated on that listing.

Weather glass

You want the Esschert-type object, you will add the water, and you accept dye, a solid hook, and a level rather than a numbered dial. It has 4.6 from 1,492 reviews at about £28.14. Use it indoors, and keep an aneroid if you need a pressure you can compare with the forecast.

Compact three-in-one

You want pressure, temperature, and humidity on one face, at a mid entry price, with a diameter the listing actually states. The Candeon is about 130 mm, aluminium, with no batteries, at about £24.83 and 4.3 from eight reviews. The pressure scale is not stated.

Common questions about barometers

Which barometer is the top pick in this comparison?
The top pick is the Youshiko traditional barometer, at about £49.99. It is the only dial here with a stated millibar scale, 960–1070 mb, and the box list includes an adjustment tool. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.4 from 67 reviews, the largest sample among the dials. It has no thermometer and no hygrometer, and a set pointer is not stated. A 5.0 from two or three reviews is a weaker sample than those 67.
How much does a household barometer cost on amazon.co.uk?
On 19 October 2026 the seven listings here ran from about £14.99 to about £279.90. Entry prices were the Voyoo at about £14.99 and the Candeon at about £24.83. The mid band, about £28 to £50, held the Esschert weather glass, the William Widdop, the aged-bronze three-in-one, and the Youshiko. The Tabic brass-and-oak piece was about £279.90. These are the saved shelf prices, not a survey of every UK shop, and they move.
What should you check before you buy a barometer?
Check the type first. Choose an aneroid when you want a pressure you can compare with the forecast, and a water weather glass only as a talking piece. Then the units: hectopascals or millibars, with inches optional, over a range near 950–1050 hPa. Look for a rear adjusting screw, and treat the set pointer as a memory mark. Read the review count next to the stars. A misprinted weather word or two disagreeing size lines are buying facts.
How do you set an aneroid barometer?
On a calm day, take the latest Met Office mean sea-level pressure and turn the rear screw until the needle matches it. Tap the glass lightly and read the dial in the same orientation later. The set pointer only marks that reading. A mismatch before you set the screw is not, by itself, a fault. If the screw cannot move the needle, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 short-term right to reject faulty goods generally runs 30 days after delivery.
Is a weather glass the same kind of instrument as a dial barometer?
A water weather glass, such as the Esschert TH31, shows a water level in a glass vessel. Air sits above the water, so temperature moves the level as well as pressure. You add the water yourself. It is a different object from a sealed FitzRoy storm glass. Keep an aneroid beside it if you need a number you can compare with the forecast. The Esschert has 4.6 from 1,492 reviews at about £28.14, and the spec line says indoor.
Can you buy a new mercury barometer for the house?
A new mercury barometer is the wrong household buy. GOV.UK restricts placing mercury measuring devices, including barometers, on the market. Exemptions include devices that were more than 50 years old on 3 October 2007, and instruments for public display. None of the seven listings here is a mercury stick or wheel. Leave an antique column closed, and treat a spill as a job for a professional.
Where should you hang a barometer, and does it measure rain?
Use an interior wall, at a height you can read, away from radiators and direct sun. Thermometer and hygrometer dials read the room around the case. A barometer shows pressure. It does not measure how much rain fell. For that, use a rain gauge. Treat an outdoor claim on a light dial with scepticism. Reviewers who hang the Esschert outside mention wind, dirt, and algae, while the spec line says indoor.
Why can the dial say Fair when the forecast says something else?
Words such as Fair or Rain are printed positions. You judge the instrument by whether pressure is rising or falling after you set it to a recent Met Office observation. A misprinted word, such as Weeper on the aged-bronze dial, is a listing fault to notice before you pay. Compare the needle with the set pointer, in the same place, on an interior wall away from a radiator.

Our verdict

The top pick is the Youshiko mahogany aneroid at about £49.99. It is the only listing here with a stated millibar scale, 960–1070 mb, and the box includes an adjustment tool. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.4 from 67 reviews, the largest sample among the dials. It has no thermometer and no hygrometer, and a set pointer is not stated. The best value is the Esschert weather glass at about £28.14, with 4.6 from 1,492 reviews, if you will fill the glass and read the water. Skip it when you need a numbered hPa reading. A 5.0 from two or three reviews does not outrank either of those samples, and this page does not claim a laboratory ranking.
