How to set up a weather station

Updated: October 2026

The number looks wrong after you fit the batteries. The outdoor temperature sits above the forecast, the rain total stays at zero, or the clock never leaves the dashes. Most of the time the sensor is in the sun, the cup is blocked, the wind cups are under the eaves, the router is 5 GHz only, or the clock was never an MSF set. This is how to set up a weather station using the sets in our [weather station comparison](/hub/climate-measuring/weather-station). The Products Compared editorial team used those amazon.co.uk listings and public UK siting notes. We did not install every set. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Put temperature out of the sun

A thermo-hygrometer in direct sun, or on a south-facing wall, will read high. BBC Weather’s note says a display which shows tenths of a degree is not a tenth-of-a-degree calibration. The Royal Meteorological Society says a budget outdoor sensor in sun and light wind can be several degrees off. That is their fieldwork warning, not a figure we measured. Shade and airflow are the fix: a north-facing wall, off the brick, not inside a closed box. On a forecast console the outdoor part is one small sensor. A combined array is harder, because temperature shares a pole with the rain cup. The weather station or thermometer page is the branch if you never needed the cups.

Level the rain cup and keep the wind in clear air

A tipping bucket that is not level does not catch the same rain. Use a spirit level. Leaves in the funnel look like a dry week. On the SQECH, reviewers say the base must be level. On the AIR6, the early snag is the bracket, not a dead console. Cups under the eaves read the draught in that corner, not the gust on the open garden. Do not correct a low anemometer up to 10 metres. These listings do not claim that height. If you share the figure, say how high the cups are. Stop before roof work. If the sensor never pairs, bring it down, fit fresh cells, and pair it on a table before you climb. The weather station with wind and rain page is where you choose the array.

Set the clock only if the listing names MSF

MSF is the UK time signal at 60 kHz from Anthorn. British Summer Time is included when the clock can hear it, and the transmitter is sometimes off. Only the U UNNI UK0512 and the HAOYAO V8 name MSF. Some UNNI reviews locked in minutes. Others never did. That is reception, not proof every set is faulty. The AIR6 and the LIORQUE say radio-controlled and do not name MSF. The Raddy, the Warmiehomy, and the Ecowitt do not name radio control. If it is not MSF, set the time from the manual.

Join 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, then check the box

The Wi-Fi consoles here are the Ecowitt WS2910, both Ambient sets, and the Temtop W100, all on 2.4 GHz. A 5 GHz-only router will not join them. A spinner is not, by itself, a dead outdoor sensor. The AIR6 highlight says no Wi-Fi. Range claims are open-air figures, not a promise through brick. The AIR6 package line includes a pole. Ecowitt reviewers say the pole is not included. UK plugs have to suit BS 1363. If the console is dead, or the sensor never pairs in the same room with cells fitted, that is a seller question under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, which gives 30 days to reject goods that do not conform. An upload does not make the garden an official Met Office station.

Common questions

Where should the outdoor sensor go in a typical UK garden?
Shade the temperature sensor, off a hot wall. Level the rain cup away from roof drips. Keep wind cups in clear air, and stop before roof work. One combined mast cannot do all three. Choose the element you will use, and state the cup height if you share the wind figure.
Why is the outdoor temperature higher than the forecast?
Sun on the sensor, or heat stored in a wall, lifts it above a shaded forecast. The Royal Meteorological Society warns that a budget sensor in sun can be several degrees off. That is their note, not a test of your set. Move it into shade before you call the console faulty. Tenths on the display are not tenths of accuracy.
Does the rain gauge have to be level?
Yes. A slight tilt changes what each tip of a bucket means. Leaves in the funnel look like a dry week. The professional rim height of about 30 cm fights a wind sensor on the same pole, so level the cup you have and do not expect both ideals. Wind under the eaves reads the corner, not the open garden, and you should not scale a low anemometer up to 10 metres.
Why has the clock not set?
MSF is 60 kHz from Anthorn, and only the UNNI and the HAOYAO name it here. The transmitter is sometimes off. Radio-controlled on the AIR6, and RCC on the LIORQUE, is not that name, so set those clocks by hand. If the listing really is MSF, rotate the console and move it off a steel frame before you assume a fault.
Will it join 5 GHz Wi-Fi, or pass 100 m through brick?
The Ecowitt, both Ambients, and the Temtop need 2.4 GHz. A 5 GHz-only router will not join them. The AIR6 has no Wi-Fi. Treat 100 m, and the Temtop’s 1,000 m LoRa line, as open-air claims. Pair on the table first. If it never links in the same room with fresh cells, that is a seller question, not a reason to climb back onto the roof.
