Ornamental plants

Updated: October 2026Hub page

Ornamental plants is the set of comparisons for a UK garden, patio, balcony or indoor pot. The cards cover climbers you tie to a wall, shrubs and grasses for a border, soft fruit in a pot, seed for bees, and pieces that are dried, preserved or artificial.

Choose the card that matches the plant and the job. A small nursery pot, a larger container, a bare root, a seed packet and a faux stem are different buys, and the cultivar, the count and the form stay on that comparison. Spray bottles for plants and vermiculite for plants stay on this hub as well.

Common questions about ornamental plants

What does this hub cover?
Ornamental plants on this hub is the set of comparisons for a UK garden, patio, balcony or indoor pot. The cards cover climbers, shrubs, ornamental grass, soft fruit, seed for bees, and a few pieces that are dried, preserved or artificial. Each card is one product type. Open that comparison for the current amazon.co.uk listings. Products Compared did not run a laboratory test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
How do you choose a comparison?
Start with the plant and the place. A wall or fence usually needs a climber you tie on, such as a rose, clematis or jasmine. A border or a hedge usually needs a shrub, a grass or a rhododendron. A patio pot can hold lavender, a blueberry or a young grapevine. A gift or a craft job may be a rose ball, preserved moss or a made flower rather than a live plant. The comparison names the form the listing actually is.
What does a pot size on a listing mean?
A figure such as 9 cm, 11 cm or 2 litres is the container, not the height the plant will reach in the garden. A young plant in a small pot will not match a photograph of a mature clump in its first summer. A bare-root rose, a rhizome, a plug and a seed packet are different buys from a potted plant. If the cultivar or the count changes between the title and the details, that clash stays on the comparison.
How do you tell a live plant from a made piece?
Some cards mix living plants with made pieces. A rose ball is an artificial flower ball for hanging or for a table. Iceland moss on this hub is preserved lichen for a frame or a wall, not a plant you water. Exotic flowers on this shelf are mostly dried, plated or faux, and a live pot is the exception. Lavender listings can be a real pot or unscented stems. Read the form on the comparison before you compare the price.
What should you check before you plant a climber?
A climbing rose does not cling the way ivy does. You tie it to wires, trellis or an arch. Jasmine and clematis also need a support the listing should not assume is already on a bare fence. Light matters: a dark north-facing wall suits some climbers and not others. The soil at the base of a wall stays drier than the open lawn, so the first season needs water even when the grass is wet. Cultivar and pot size stay on the comparison.
What is an ADR rose, and why might the title omit it?
ADR is a German trial mark for garden roses grown without fungicides, with leaf health weighed heavily. A rose in that comparison can still be a garden rose whose title never prints the letters ADR. Check the cultivar against a current ADR list rather than trusting the search term. An RHS Award of Garden Merit is a different award. Neither mark replaces the pot size or the name printed on the parcel.
Does a plant passport prove the plant is sound?
A plant passport on a posted plant traces the seller. It does not prove hardiness, an award, or that the plant is sound. Those points sit on the comparison and in public UK guidance, not on the passport label. If a plant arrives dead or the box is crushed, treat that as a delivery fault, photograph the parcel, and do not compost the evidence before you ask for a remedy.
Where should you start?
Start with the job, then open one card. Scent and bees in a sunny spot usually point to lavender or buddleia. Red new growth for a screen points to photinia. A winter plume points to miscanthus. A fence or a wall points to a climber, then to the guides on shade and support. An indoor pot with a large leaf points to strelitzia, after you check the species and the height on arrival. This hub is a set of separate comparisons.
Which spray bottle for plants is the top pick in this set?
In this set the top pick is the Gardena pump sprayer 0.75 L. The listing states a brass nozzle from a full jet to a fine mist and a 360° spray, and amazon.co.uk shows 4.7 from 1,722 reviews at £11.99. It is also the dearest bottle here. These scores are not a laboratory test.
How much does a plant mister cost on amazon.co.uk?
Shelf prices in this set, taken on 15 October 2026, run from £2.99 to £11.99. Gardena is £11.99. A plain trigger here sits under £7. Prices move, so check the live page.
Should you choose a pump, a trigger or a continuous mist?
A pump holds pressure. The Gardena 0.75 litre is the pump in this set. A trigger sends one shot per squeeze. Both GRIFEMA listings claim a continuous mist after one full press, and some UK reviews say the spray only lasts while the trigger is held, or that it stopped within days or about a month.
Should you mist cacti and succulents?
The Royal Horticultural Society says cacti and succulents prefer dry air and can rot if they are kept damp. Frequent spraying is described as one help for some tropical houseplants, including epiphytic ferns. Do not mist moth-orchid flowers, and keep water out of a Phalaenopsis crown.
Which vermiculite for plants is the top pick?
In this amazon.co.uk set the top pick is PLANT!T vermiculite 100 L. It has 4.7 from 1,011 reviews, and the £42.95 shelf price is about £0.43 per litre. The listing does not print a millimetre grade, and reviewers describe the flakes as chunky, so it is a weaker buy for a thin seed cover.
Is vermiculite the same as perlite?
No. Vermiculite holds water. Perlite opens air spaces in the mix. One listing in the set is a 50/50 blend, so its price per litre is the price of the mix.
What should I check before I buy vermiculite?
Check grade first. Fine flakes cover seed, medium flakes around 2–5 mm belong in a mix, and a missing millimetre line means the grade is unknown until you open the bag. Read the litres on the selected variant, not the biggest number in the title. Then see whether the bag is pure vermiculite or a perlite blend.
How should I store vermiculite for plants?
Keep the bag dry. Reviews in this set describe punctures, damp sacks and dust. A sealable bucket suits a windowsill between sowings. A 100 L sack only pays if you will use the volume and have somewhere dry to put it.
