ADR rose vs RHS AGM: which award means what

Updated: 22 October 2026

You read award winning on a rose title and assume one badge covers leaf health, garden performance and availability in Britain. ADR rose vs RHS AGM splits a German unsprayed novelty trial, with a fifteen-year mark, from the UK garden list the Royal Horticultural Society reviews. Neither phrase on a silent amazon.co.uk listing tells you which system applied. The [ADR rose bush comparison](/hub/ornamental-plants/adr-rose-bush) stores twelve pots with no ADR line. Peter F. compared the ADR guide of 24 September 2024 with the RHS rose review. A qualifying purchase through our amazon.co.uk links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Two awards, two questions

ADR asks whether a new cultivar kept leaves and vigour for up to three years at German trial sites without fungicides, with insecticides only under trial rules. Leaf health ranks ahead of flower shape. The RHS Award of Garden Merit asks whether a rose performs in ordinary UK gardens, stays true to type, remains on sale, and shows reasonable resistance. That is not the same unsprayed pass. A rose can hold both marks in the wider trade. That overlap does not apply to these Carbeth and Willows files, which name neither award. Polar Star's award winning title is not mapped to either. The rows above record that gap. They are not an award ranking.

Time, sites and sprays

ADR uses up to twelve sites for three years, then a fifteen-year mark unless a repeat trial extends it. Without that repeat, the cultivar leaves the current list. RHS awards come from trials and committees. The rose review quoted 209 reconfirmed AGM roses, 105 removed and 16 held pending, including plants prone to black spot, rust or mildew. That is not the German fifteen-year clock. ICEBERG and SILVER ANNIVERSARY were among the removals. They are not the Silver Wedding ASINs here. The ADR guide centres on no fungicides in the trial. Older English Bundessortenamt wording mentioned herbicides and a different cultivar count. When sources clash, follow the guide and the live list. An RHS trial is not a promise that your garden will never need an amateur spray.

What neither award promises

An ADR rose can still spot in a wet year, which ADR's own pages allow. An AGM rose can lose the badge when performance slips, and RHS black-spot guidance says resistance can fade. Neither mark skips leaf clearance, airflow, or a site with sun and drainage. Award winning on a title is not ADR, AGM, or a current list entry. Disease resistant in a bullet is weaker still. Every row in this set says ADR is not stated. The name check is on how to check a current ADR rose.

Which list to open

For the German unsprayed record, open https://www.adr-rose.de/adr-rosen/ and match the trade name. For a rose judged in UK gardens and still sold, use the current RHS AGM list and that cultivar's cultivation page. If a wet British summer is the reason you searched, check both lists, then still plan mulch and leaf clearance. None of the 3 litre files in this set documented either mark. Colour and class are on which listing fits the job.

Common questions

What does each award actually measure?
ADR measures unsprayed leaf health and hardiness on new cultivars in a German trial, with flower shape secondary. The RHS Award of Garden Merit measures UK garden performance, whether the plant stays available to buy, and reasonable resistance. They answer different questions. A rose can be discussed under one list without appearing on the other.
Where is each trial run, and for how long?
ADR uses German sites, up to twelve of them, for three years, then a fifteen-year mark unless a repeat trial extends it. The RHS uses UK trials, committees and roundtables on its own timetable. A rose review that removed 105 AGM roses is not the same event as an ADR lapse in year sixteen.
Are the roses sprayed?
ADR trial rules centre on no fungicides, with insecticides only under the trial lead. RHS assessments are not that unsprayed protocol. Home spraying in your garden still follows Health and Safety Executive rules for amateur products, used exactly as labelled. Neither award is a pesticide exemption.
Can either award be lost?
Yes. ADR lapses after fifteen years without a successful repeat trial, and the cultivar leaves the current list. The RHS can rescind an Award of Garden Merit when health or availability fails. The rose review quoted 105 removals, including plants that had become prone to black spot, rust or mildew.
If I want a plant for a wet British summer, which list do I open?
Start with the cultivar name on the current ADR list and on the current RHS AGM list, then choose the site and plan sanitation. A single amazon.co.uk adjective is not either list. Spots can still appear, so leaf clearance and airflow stay part of the job after you buy.
Can one cultivar hold both?
In the wider trade, yes. Retail pages sometimes name roses that carry both marks. That fact does not apply to the Carbeth and Willows listings in this folder, because the stored text names neither award. Do not copy an overlap from another shop onto these ASINs.
Does award winning on a UK listing tell me which award?
No. Polar Star is the worked example in this set. The title says award winning hybrid tea, and the stored file does not identify ADR or the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Disease resistant in a bullet is weaker still. Open the named list for the cultivar, not the adjective.
Does either award mean no black spot in my garden?
No. ADR's pages allow spots in a real garden, and the RHS says resistance can fade, including on plants that once held an Award of Garden Merit. Plan for spots, airflow and fallen-leaf clearance either way. A current badge is a record of a trial or a review, not a promise for your fence line.
