How to check a rose is a current ADR rose

Updated: 22 October 2026

You want a bush that still carries leaves through a wet British summer, and the seller's page says disease resistant, or the category name mentions ADR. Before you pay on amazon.co.uk, you need a check that does not depend on marketing adjectives. The [ADR rose bush comparison](/hub/ornamental-plants/adr-rose-bush) stores twelve Carbeth and Willows offers at about £22.99 to £30.99, and none of those files prints an ADR sentence. This page is the verification method. Peter F. checked those stored listings against the ADR guide of 24 September 2024 and the public ADR list. This is not a garden trial. What the ADR mark is

ADR stands for Allgemeine Deutsche Rosenneuheitenprüfung, a German novelty trial of up to three years at as many as twelve sites. Trial roses are grown without fungicides. Insecticides are allowed only under the trial lead. The guide of 24 September 2024 puts leaf health and hardiness ahead of flower shape. Climbers, shrubs, bedding roses, hybrid teas and miniatures can enter. Rugosa types, wild roses and once-flowering cultivars are excluded. The trial is not UK law and not a pesticide exemption. The Health and Safety Executive expects amateur products used exactly as labelled. Spots can still appear, and the Royal Horticultural Society says resistance can fade.

Why the mark lasts 15 years

Since 2018, a pass lasts fifteen years, then lapses unless a three-year repeat trial extends it for another fifteen years. A cultivar off the current list is not automatically a poor garden rose. The official unsprayed record has aged out or was not renewed. A nursery can still sell a former ADR name, and award winning on a listing does not name the award. Neither case replaces the live list. The German mark and the RHS Award of Garden Merit are different tests, set out on ADR rose vs RHS AGM.

How to check a name

Open https://www.adr-rose.de/adr-rosen/ and search the trade name on the label, not the occasion word on a gift title. The page shows year, repeat-trial flag, breeder, type and colour. On 21 October 2026 the live list said over 164 cultivars. Older English Bundessortenamt wording mentioned 192 and looser spray language. Prefer the guide and the live list when they conflict. Ignore disease resistant or award winning until the name matches. Polar Star's title says award winning hybrid tea, and the file does not call that ADR. Carbeth Golden Wedding's title and item-type line disagree, Golden versus Ruby, which is a Consumer Rights Act 2015 description issue, not an ADR decision.

What you still have to judge

Even after a name matches the live list, you still read class, height, gift wrap and the September-to-April prune note. A winter stick can match dispatch. A dead crown or a wrong colour is a conversation with the seller. Goods should be as described, and this page does not promise a fourteen-day return for a perishable plant. About £22.99 to £30.99 is a posted pot, not an ADR grade. Euro prices on German shops are not UK shelf prices. A shared 4.2 from 1,032 reviews is not one cultivar's health score. Colour and class, once you accept the ADR gap, are on which listing fits the job.

Common questions

What does ADR actually test?
It tests new garden rose cultivars for leaf health and hardiness under an unsprayed fungicide regime, across a multi-year German trial at up to twelve sites, with flower shape secondary. Insecticides are allowed only under the trial lead. It does not test your patio compost, your neighbour's spraying habits, or the amazon.co.uk listings in this folder.
Is disease resistant on amazon.co.uk the same as ADR?
No. Seller adjectives are not the live list. Polar Star's bullet says very good disease resistance and the title says award winning, and the stored file does not say ADR. Orange Sensation has one buyer review about resistance in that garden. The listing text still does not name the trial.
Does an ADR rose mean I never see black spot?
No. ADR's own pages allow that spots can appear, and the Royal Horticultural Society says resistance can fade. Plan leaf clearance, mulch and a site with sun and drainage anyway. A current mark is a trial record, not immunity under your fence.
Is ADR a UK legal standard?
No. It is a German quality mark coordinated with the Bundessortenamt. It is not UK law and it does not exempt you from pesticide rules. The Health and Safety Executive still expects home gardeners to use amateur products exactly as labelled.
What if the seller's name is not on the current list?
Buy only if you wanted that cultivar for colour, a gift occasion, or class, and then judge leaf health in your own garden. Do not treat the folder name ADR rose bush as a certificate. In this stored set, every comparison row says ADR is not stated.
What if the plant is dead or the wrong colour?
Contact the seller with photos. That is a description and quality issue under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, not proof the cultivar failed ADR, especially when no ADR line was printed. A short stick from September to April can be a dispatch prune. A mushy crown or a plainly wrong colour is not.
