Clematis plants buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are on amazon.co.uk with a fence to cover, and the results mix plug plants, rhizomes, bulbs, and packs counted in the hundreds. This clematis plants buying guide has one job: show what a listing must name before you pay, and what a colour letter fails to tell you. Products Compared read the six offers kept in the [clematis plants comparison](/hub/ornamental-plants/clematis-plants) on 20 October 2026, using the amazon.co.uk prices and review lines stored for those ASINs. We did not grow them in a lab. A qualifying purchase through our amazon.co.uk links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What the listing has to name

The useful label is the cultivar, written the same way in the title and the bullets, plus the form you will unpack, plus a pruning group if next year’s flowers matter. The Royal Horticultural Society looks for several stems and for roots at the drainage holes of a pot. Which? says to note the pruning group on the label before the plant comes home. You apply that rule to the wording on the amazon page. Colour code D and colour code B are listing codes, not petal colours. The four-bulb pack at about £4.79 and the six-bulb pack at about £7.79 are both colour D and unnamed. Three colour D rhizomes are about £8.99 and three colour B rhizomes are about £10.59. None of those four pages prints a cultivar or a group. Hardy, or shade-tolerant, is still not an RHS hardiness band. A count of 500 or 1,000 is a seed packet and sits outside this comparison.

Plug, rhizome, or bulb

A plug is a young plant in a small cell. The Growtanical trio at about £16.99 has a title that says Clematis montana pink 'Mayleen' and a bullet that says Clematis montana Rubens. Plants are coming, and the page does not settle which name is in the box. It is the only listing here that prints pruning group 1. How that number changes a February cut is on the clematis pruning groups page. A rhizome pack is three bare roots with a colour code and no name. The bulb packs are the same kind of unnamed root. RHS buying advice assumes a pot you can tip out. These listings do not give you that until the parcel arrives. Walls and fences on the rhizome bullets is a suggested use, not a height or a group. Clematis 'Rooguchi' Rare 10 semi at about £13.50 puts the cultivar in the title. The quantity is not stable: 10 pieces, 1 item, and a bullet that says 1 pc. The habit comparison is on the Clematis Mayleen vs Rooguchi page.

Passport and arrival evidence

Only the Growtanical listing mentions an APHA registered plant passport. GOV.UK requires UK plant passports for plants for planting moved in Great Britain. APHA covers England and Wales, SASA covers Scotland, and Northern Ireland is DAERA. A sentence on a product page is a claim, not a photograph of the passport, and it does not transfer to the unnamed rhizomes. If you are ordering into Northern Ireland, do not read an APHA sentence as a DAERA document. The six-bulb pack is 5.0 from one review with no text. The colour D rhizomes repeat mouldy or dead roots, no growth, and one bag of straw. The four-bulb pack is 1.0 from six, and the texts say nothing grew. The plugs are 3.9 from 17. Who each listing is for is on the best clematis plants page. A dead or mouldy root on arrival is not clematis wilt. Wilt is a fungus, or hot dry roots, on a plant that has already grown. Section 9 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires satisfactory quality.

Use the checks in this order

The same cultivar should appear in the title and the bullets. The form should be a plug, a rhizome, or the seller’s bulb, not a seed count in the hundreds. A pruning group should be printed if next year’s flowers matter. You need a size you can use, which these unnamed packs do not give you. Review texts should outweigh a silent 5.0. A passport claim should be read as a claim. If the first three fail, leave the listing. Depth, the hole, and the wires are a planting job, not part of this checklist.

Common questions

Is a colour letter such as B or D the flower colour?
No. In these listings B and D separate one unnamed pack from another. Both bulb packs are colour D, and neither states a petal colour. The rhizomes use D at about £8.99 and B at about £10.59, still without a cultivar. If the page does not print a colour in words, you do not have a flower colour.
Is a pack of 500 or 1,000 a plant or a seed packet?
A count in the hundreds is a seed packet and sits outside this comparison. The six offers kept here are plugs, rhizomes, or the seller’s bulbs, at about £4.79 to £16.99. A plant name on the front of a seed packet does not make the envelope a plug for a fence this season.
Which of these six listings prints a pruning group?
Only the Growtanical three-plug listing prints one, and it says group 1. The unnamed root packs leave the group blank. Perennial on those pages is not a group. The 'Rooguchi' title at about £13.50 does not print a group either. The RHS profile for that cultivar is group 3, which is not a line on the amazon page.
Should you trust a 5.0 from one review with no text?
No. The six-bulb pack at about £7.79 is 5.0 from one review, and the stored file has no review text. That star cannot tell you the roots were alive. The colour D rhizomes at 2.1 from 25 repeat mould and failed growth. A single five should not outrank a page you can read.
What can you do if the roots arrive mouldy or dead?
Keep the listing and the parcel, and treat a dead root as a problem with the goods. Section 9 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 expects satisfactory quality. Clematis wilt shows on a plant that has grown. A bag of straw, or roots that never sprout, is not wilt.
