Best clematis plants

Updated: 22 October 2026

You want a fence covered, a border that stays around 2 m, or the cheapest parcel you can afford to lose, and amazon.co.uk is already sorted by stars. Best clematis plants, on this page, means which of the six kept offers matches that job, and who should leave it alone. Products Compared read those listings in the [clematis plants comparison](/hub/ornamental-plants/clematis-plants) on 20 October 2026. We did not grow a trial row. A qualifying purchase through our amazon.co.uk links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. RHS notes on award-winning clematis name cultivars that are not in this set, so this is not a verdict on the best clematis in Britain.

Fence cover in this set

The only listing that names a vigorous climber, and the only one that prints a pruning group, is the Growtanical set of three plug plants at about £16.99. The title says Clematis montana pink 'Mayleen'. A bullet says Clematis montana Rubens. Those two lines do not settle which plant is in the cells. If the plant is 'Mayleen', the RHS profile is 8–12 m tall, spread 1.5–2.5 m, H5, and group 1. The listing’s height and spread 10 m, and its H4, do not match that page. Group 1 is still printed: a montana is tidied after flowering, not cut hard in February. In this set that plug trio is the top pick for a fence or an outbuilding, once wires or mesh give the leaf stalks something thin to twine around. Seventeen reviews average 3.9. Several describe healthy plants that were potted on. One says each plant was about the size of two clothes pegs and needed about six weeks. Skip this offer if you need cover this summer, if a 45 cm pot is the whole garden, or if you wanted a large-flowered hybrid. An unnamed rhizome with a walls and fences bullet names no cultivar, no group, and no height. The split with the shorter bell-flowered plant is on Clematis Mayleen vs Rooguchi.

A border around 2 m

Clematis 'Rooguchi' Rare 10 semi is about £13.50. If the parcel is that cultivar, the RHS profile is a clump-forming herbaceous perennial, about 1.5–2.5 m tall and 1–1.5 m across, with purple bell flowers, pruning group 3, and H6. It will not cover a house wall. Stems of this habit can flop, so the usual support is a border hoop or a shrub, not a run of fence wires. The amazon page does not print height, flower colour, sun, or the group. The quantity disagrees: 10 pieces, 1 item, and a bullet that says 1 pc. Order it as one unresolved parcel, not as ten plants. Three reviews average 3.4. One describes a strong plant and bell-shaped flowers. Another says seeds had not sprouted by 5 September 2026. This is the best value in the set only when you want a border around 2 m and can live with the count. Skip it for a fence or a house wall. None of the six listings is a large-flowered group 2 hybrid. The February cut is on the clematis pruning groups page.

The low-price packs and the star trap

Four offers below £11 name no cultivar. The lowest price is the MCHIKJHM four-bulb pack, colour code D, at about £4.79. Six reviews leave it at 1.0, and the texts say the roots were mouldy and nothing grew. Colour D is a seller code, not a petal colour. Buy it only if a failed parcel is a cost you have already priced in. A mouldy root in the bag is a satisfactory-quality question under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Clematis wilt is a disease of a plant that has already grown. The six-bulb pack, also colour D, is about £7.79 and shows 5.0 from one review with no stored text. That lone five is the highest star line here, and it is not a trial of the plant. The NYUYDRX colour D rhizomes are about £8.99 and 2.1 from 25 reviews, the largest file. The texts repeat mouldy or dead roots, no growth, and one bag of straw. A few say a poor arrival grew later. The colour B rhizomes are about £10.59, with 1.0 from one review and no text. Neither letter is a flower colour.

Before you sort by stars

Write the job in one line before you reorder the results: fence, a border around 2 m, or a cheap trial you can afford to lose. The fence line is the plug trio at about £16.99. The border line is the 'Rooguchi' title at about £13.50, if you are not counting ten plants. The trial line is about £4.79, read against texts that say nothing grew. The 5.0 from one silent review does not win any of those three jobs. A hardy perennial line does not assign a pruning group.

Common questions

Which listing in this set is for covering a fence?
The Growtanical three plugs at about £16.99 are the only named climber here, and the only page that prints pruning group 1. If the plant matches the 'Mayleen' profile, the RHS height is 8–12 m, once you have wires or mesh. The plants are young plugs, so this season’s cover is unlikely.
Why is the 5.0 not the top pick?
The 5.0 belongs to the six-bulb pack at about £7.79, from one review with no stored text. Nothing in the file says whether a root grew or flowered. The top pick for a fence is the plug trio, because the listing names a climber and prints a group. A single unexplained star is not a reason to prefer two extra unnamed bulbs.
Who should look at the Rooguchi listing, and who should skip it?
Look at the about £13.50 'Rooguchi' title if you want bell flowers on a plant around 1.5–2.5 m and you accept that the count is unresolved. The RHS profile, if the parcel matches it, is herbaceous and group 3. Skip it for fence cover or for ten plants. Three reviews at 3.4 split between a strong plant and seeds that had not sprouted by 5 September 2026.
Is the £4.79 four-bulb pack a sensible trial?
Only if you have already decided that about £4.79 can be lost. Six reviews sit at 1.0, and the texts describe mouldy roots and no growth. Colour code D is not a flower colour, and the page names no cultivar or group. Treat a mouldy arrival as a goods problem under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. It is not evidence that a clematis will establish.
Is there a best clematis for every UK garden in this file?
No. A fence with wires points at the plug trio, with the cultivar still unproven. A border around 2 m points at the 'Rooguchi' habit, if that plant is what arrives. A cheap trial points at about £4.79 only when failure is acceptable. Nothing here is a named large-flowered group 2 hybrid. RHS award lists name other cultivars that are not these six ASINs.
