Iceland moss for moss walls

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are measuring a hallway board, or a blank shop wall, and wondering whether one box of preserved lichen will cover it. Iceland moss for moss walls is a coverage question first and a room question second. You should finish with one seller's own rate, a dry indoor limit, and a stop line for any wall that is not a home craft. The five cards sit on the [Iceland moss comparison](/hub/ornamental-plants/iceland-moss). Products Compared read those files on 20 October 2026. This is not a lab test, and a qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. How to judge a stated dry weight is on the [Iceland moss buying guide](/hub/ornamental-plants/iceland-moss/sub/iceland-moss-buying-guide).

A 500 g pack is a panel, not a wall

A stated 500 g box is a picture or a small indoor panel. It is not a square metre of thick wall. Barn Florist describes 500 g as about 60 by 40 cm. Natural Crafts describes about 45 by 30 cm at 5 cm deep. preservedmoss.co.uk describes about 40 by 20 cm, and a later gross line as about 0.1-0.15 square metres. Highland Moss says a 450-650 g box, packaging included, covers about 50 by 40 cm and is not hand-cleaned. You cannot treat the largest figure as your own box. A small home frame is often one 100-500 g pack after you throw away needles. Glue is on how to use Iceland moss.

Kilograms for a thick square metre

A thick square metre is a different job from a 500 g panel. Seller claims run from roughly 2 kg to about 8 kg per square metre, depending on thickness. preservedmoss.co.uk states about 6.5-7 kg per square metre for a dense layer at 5-7 cm, and a 5 kg box as about 0.75 square metres. Verdi Preserved states about 8 kg per square metre. Use the rate printed by the seller you paid. Do not average the claims. preservedmoss.co.uk lists £11.90 for 500 g and £119.95 for a 5 kg box. Those prices are a scale check, not a British Standard. GJS prints conflicting weights and reviews describe a wet yield. Mia Milano's kept file has no gram weight. Heki 3313, at £4.78, is scenery, not wall stock. A small pack is on best Iceland moss.

The room

Preserved Iceland moss for a wall or a panel is an indoor material. Atlas Flowers states indoor use, no water, and out of direct sun. Highland Moss warns that lasting damp can stain and can mould. Dust it. Do not mist it. The piece does not grow, and it does not clean the air. A title that mentions frogs is not a reason to line an animal enclosure. Outside, or in a porch that gets rain, this material is the wrong product.

When the wall is no longer a craft

A picture in a hallway is a craft. A wall in a shop, an office, or a common part is when you call a professional. Nurture states that it supplies internal moss walls only. Ordinary preserved moss is not fire-retardant. Atlas Flowers sells a fire-retardant moss as a separate range. Vantage Spaces describes commercial moss walls tested as a finished system to EN 13501-1, with suppliers quoting a class such as B-s1, d0. The test has to cover the finished system. None of the five amazon.co.uk listings here is a fire-rated wall system. A home panel stays with that seller's coverage line, out of water and direct sun.

Common questions

How much preserved Iceland moss covers a square metre?
There is no single UK figure. Seller claims run from roughly 2 kg to about 8 kg per square metre, depending on thickness. preservedmoss.co.uk states about 6.5-7 kg for a dense layer at 5-7 cm. Verdi Preserved states about 8 kg. Use the rate from the seller you paid. A thin panel and a 7 cm layer are different jobs.
What does one 500 g pack actually cover?
It depends on the seller and the depth. Barn Florist says about 60 by 40 cm. Natural Crafts says about 45 by 30 cm at 5 cm deep. preservedmoss.co.uk has described about 40 by 20 cm, and also about 0.1-0.15 square metres. Highland Moss says a 450-650 g box, packaging included, covers about 50 by 40 cm. None of those areas is a square metre.
Why do sellers disagree by several kilograms?
They are describing different thicknesses, and sometimes the box weight includes packaging. A fluffy 2 cm scatter and a dense 5-7 cm layer cannot share one kilogram figure. The spread, roughly 2 kg to about 8 kg per square metre, is seller claims, not a standard. An uncleaned bag also loses needles, so parcel weight is not dry coverage.
Can you hang it in a bathroom or in direct sun?
A bathroom and a sunny window are poor defaults. Atlas Flowers says indoor only, no water, and out of direct sun. Steam and radiator heat work against preserved lichen in the same way a misting bottle does. Highland Moss links lasting damp with stains and mould. Hang a home panel in a dry room and dust it.
Does ordinary preserved moss count as fire-retardant?
No. A fire claim on a commercial wall belongs to a finished system tested to EN 13501-1, which is how Vantage Spaces frames the UK job. A supplier class such as B-s1, d0 is not a property of every bag of dyed lichen. Atlas Flowers sells fire-retardant moss as a separate range.
When do you call a professional?
When the wall is in a shop, an office, or a common part of a building. A home picture can stay a craft if you use the seller's coverage line and you do not water it. A commercial wall needs the installer, the substrate, and, where the building requires it, a fire test of the finished system. Heki scenery lichen at £4.78 does not become that wall.
