Before any glue

Open the bag over a tray and sort it dry. Pick out pine needles, small leaves, twigs, and long roots that will show on a pale board. An uncleaned pack, or one sold as not hand-cleaned, means that job is yours, and the waste is weight you cannot glue. Do not wash, rinse, soak, or mist the lichen. Water moves the dye. Atlas Flowers and Highland Moss treat regular wetting as the thing that stains cloth and can lead to mould. The Plant Point says protect the worktop, then plan the design dry before any glue. If the bag is mostly sticks, raise that with the seller.

Gloves and dye

Colour comes off preserved lichen. Atlas Flowers tells you to wear gloves while you glue, because the dye can transfer to skin. The Plant Point says to cover the table. Review notes on the picture-and-wall listings describe colour on fingers, clothes, or a white surface. Natural white is a shop name, not a bright white frame. Notes on the 500 g natural white pack describe grey or brown in part. Sort by tone while the pieces are loose, and put the greyer heads at the frame edge. If a mark appears on the cloth, lift the dry dust. Do not wet the lichen to rub it off.

How to fix it in a frame

Lay the heads out dry, with a little spare for trimming. Ekomoss talks about adding about 15% for trimming waste. Treat that as a shop rule of thumb, not a British Standard. Put the glue on the board, then press the head in so the tips face out. The Plant Point puts glue on the frame for reindeer moss and on the bun only for cushion moss. Do not soak the clump in glue. A low-temperature glue stick or a solvent-free craft glue is what frame shops describe. Ninfa Studio uses PVA and waits about 24 hours. Those are seller methods, not a lab method. High heat can scorch the fibres. Leave the frame flat until the glue has set.

After it is finished

Hang the piece indoors, out of direct sun, and away from a radiator and from steam. Atlas Flowers states indoor only, no watering, and out of direct sun. A bathroom is a poor default. Highland Moss warns that a piece left wet, or kept in a humid terrarium, can stain and can mould. Dust it with a dry brush. Do not mist it. The Moos Zeit bullets say you do not need to water it. The piece does not grow, and ordinary preserved moss is not the fire-retardant range Atlas sells separately. Coverage for a wall is on Iceland moss for moss walls. Which card matches the job is on best Iceland moss. Call a professional for a shop, office, or common-part wall, and for any live-animal enclosure.

Common questions

Do you wash preserved Iceland moss before you glue it?
No. Sort it dry and pick out needles, leaves, and long roots. Washing, rinsing, or misting moves the dye and works against the preservation. Atlas Flowers and Highland Moss both treat water as the thing that stains surfaces and can lead to mould if the piece stays damp. If the bag is dirty, the clean is your fingers and a tray, not the sink.
What do you pick out of an uncleaned bag?
Pine needles, small leaves, twigs, and long roots. An uncleaned or not-hand-cleaned pack means you do that yourself, and the waste is weight you lose before anything is glued. On a pale frame those bits show in the gaps once the piece is hung. If only the top of the box looks usable, contact the seller. Do not glue the sticks in.
Where does the glue go, on the moss or on the board?
On the board or the frame, then you press the head of the lichen in so the tips face out. The Plant Point draws that line for reindeer moss, and puts glue on the bun only for cushion moss. Plan the layout dry first. A low-temperature glue or a solvent-free craft glue is what frame shops describe, and Ninfa Studio waits about 24 hours with PVA. Those times are seller methods, not a test we ran.
Do you need gloves?
Yes, if the pack is dyed, and that is the usual case. Atlas Flowers says wear gloves while you glue because colour transfers to skin. Cover a pale table as well. Review notes in this comparison describe colour on fingers, clothes, and white surfaces. Gloves stop the dye on you and on the cloth. They do not stop it inside the fibre.
Can you mist it to keep it soft?
No. Do not mist, spray, or water preserved Iceland moss. The Moos Zeit bullets in this comparison say you do not need to water it. Highland Moss warns that regular wetting, or a humid terrarium, can make dye run and can let mould start. Dust the finished frame with a dry brush.
Where should the finished piece sit?
Indoors, out of direct sunlight, and away from a radiator and from steam. A hallway or a living room is the usual place. A bathroom is a poor default because steam keeps the surface damp, and Highland Moss links lasting damp with stains and mould. The piece is decoration. It does not grow, and it does not clean the air.
