Iceland moss buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have a pale frame, or a small board for a hallway, and the amazon.co.uk results are mixing craft lichen with sea-moss gel and nylon. This Iceland moss buying guide is the order of checks before a brand name is worth your time: a cleaned pack with a net gram weight, a scenery piece, or bulk kilograms. The five kept listings sit on the [Iceland moss comparison](/hub/ornamental-plants/iceland-moss). Products Compared read those amazon.co.uk files on 20 October 2026. This is not a lab test, and a qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually buying

In a UK craft shop, Iceland moss for a picture is preserved reindeer lichen, the same spongy material sold as reindeer moss or Icelandic lichen. It is not a living houseplant, and it is not a food. Botanical Iceland moss, Cetraria islandica, turns up in herbal jars. A gel, sphagnum, or nylon fails this page before price or stars matter. The Iceland moss or reindeer moss page sorts those names.

Six checks before the brand

Stop when a listing fails a check. The title should say preserved, reindeer, Icelandic lichen, or Iceland moss for crafts. A 10 cm scenery piece is for a layout, a stated 500 g pack is for a frame, and bulk kilograms are for a wall. Cleaned means fewer pine needles. Not cleaned means you sort the bag, and that waste is weight you cannot glue. You then want a net weight the rest of the file does not contradict. Expect dye on your hands and on pale cloth. Keep it indoor, out of direct sun and out of steam, and do not water it. A star line from outside the United Kingdom does not outrank those checks.

Weight you can use

Use a net gram or kilogram figure, and ignore a price-per-gram ranking when the lines disagree. Slimeside states 1 litre and a unit count of 130 g, not cleaned, so £11.13 is not a price per dry gram. GJS prints 3.75 kg and a unit count of 4,000 g beside title sizes of 1 kg, 500 g, and 200 g, and reviews describe a wet yield. Mia Milano's kept file has no gram weight, and the details print ASIN B091BLW2CX on the B08ZHQNJPJ page. Moos Zeit states 500 g, with an item weight of 520 g. Which card fits that job is on the best Iceland moss page.

Dye, colour, and the room

Atlas Flowers tells you to wear gloves while you glue, because dye can leave the fibre. Natural white in review notes is often grey or brown in part. Cleaned means fewer needles, not dye that stays off your hands. Care sheets say indoor only, no water, and out of direct sun. A steamy bathroom is a poor default. Do not use an uncleaned dyed pack as reptile bedding because a title mentions frogs. The file has no safety test for that. The sequence is on how to use Iceland moss.

Which job needs which pack

Heki 3313, at £4.78, is a layout hedge, not a wall carton. A picture wants a stated dry weight, in this set the 500 g class, after you accept dye and a roughly cleaned grade. The cheaper litre pack is the wrong saving on a pale frame. Buy preserved stock. Section 13 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 says you must not uproot any wild plant unless you are authorised. A wet bag sold as dry moss is a returns point under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Ordinary preserved moss is not fire-retardant, and it does not clean the air.

Common questions

What should the title say before you buy?
Look for preserved, reindeer, Icelandic lichen, or Iceland moss for crafts. Close a title that is sea-moss gel, a herbal lichen, sphagnum substrate, or nylon. A Latin name on its own is not enough, because wall stock is often sold as Cladonia stellaris while other sellers print a different Cladonia name. The job still has to match a layout, a frame, or a wall.
Does not cleaned change the weight you can use?
Yes. Not cleaned, and not hand-cleaned, mean you pick out pine needles, wood, and leaves, and that waste is weight you cannot glue. Highland Moss says its bulk boxes are not hand-cleaned. Cleaned means fewer needles, not a promise that the dye stays off your hands.
Why is a litre pack a weak way to judge dry moss?
A litre is a volume. The Slimeside listing states 1 litre and a unit count of 130 g, and the title says the moss is not cleaned. Those two figures are not one net dry weight, and sorting removes more of what you paid for. Do not turn £11.13 into a price per gram.
Will natural white stay white, and will the dye mark cloth?
Do not count on a bright white. Review notes on natural white packs often describe grey or brown in part. Dye can mark skin, pale cloth, and a white surface, which is why gloves and a covered table are the usual advice. A cleaned grade reduces needles. It does not lock the colour.
Can you water it, or put it in a steamy bathroom?
No. Preserved Iceland moss is kept indoors, out of direct sun and out of steam, and you do not water it. Atlas Flowers states that indoor, no-water care on its moss-art pages. Water can move the dye and can leave the piece able to mould. The kept files have no safety test for bedding an animal on that pack.
What if the bag arrives wet?
A wet bag sold as dry moss is a description problem. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, goods must be as described, so a soaked parcel is a returns issue with the seller rather than a craft technique. Do not spread wet lichen on a pale frame to dry it in place.
