Little Red Robin photinia for a patio or a low hedge

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are choosing a plant for a small UK garden or a patio, and Little Red Robin photinia is the name on the label. Before you pay, you need a height you can plan around, and a listing that states the pot and the size in the box. The Royal Horticultural Society puts the mature plant at 1–1.5 m. Several nurseries say about 1 m. A screen of about 2 m remains a job for 'Red Robin', and only when that listing gives one height. The wider table is on the [main Photinia comparison](/hub/ornamental-plants/photinia). Prices below are GBP shelf prices from amazon.co.uk. How tall it stays

UK sources keep Little Red Robin low, and they do not share one number. The RHS profile lists 1–1.5 m, the growing guide about 1.5 m, and the RHS shop 1 m. Thompson & Morgan says up to 100 cm. Buckingham Nurseries lists a clipped hedge of 60–90 cm. A clipped hedge and a free shrub are different jobs. Roots Plants says 1–1.5 m in one place and 1.5–2.5 m in an FAQ on the same URL. Keep 2.5 m out of your plan. The RHS position line says full shade or partial shade, and the cultivation line says sun or partial shade, so this page does not choose. About 2 m of cover is the wrong job for this cultivar.

What changes versus Red Robin

'Red Robin' can reach 4–8 m if you leave it. Little Red Robin is the 1–1.5 m plant, and Buckingham Nurseries describes it as slower. The RHS notes creamy-white spring flowers if you have not sheared them off. Chelsea Direct's field says no flowers. That is a listing field, not a trial. Buckingham's distance is 38 cm apart, for a hedge of 60–90 cm. Leave full-size spacing on the Photinia Red Robin hedge page. The size ladder stays on the Photinia buying guide. Move to 'Red Robin' when the screen must clear head height and the listing states one height.

The three listings

A nursery's mature height is not the plant in the parcel. Chelsea Direct, B0HL95LBNS, is £14.40, an 11 cm pot and about 25 cm supplied, plus a height field of 1 m. Treat 25 cm as the parcel and 1 m as a mature claim beside Thompson & Morgan's 100 cm. There is no star line. Portal Cool B0BR7ZGCD1 is £13.50 in a 3.5 inch pot, with no height. B0BR7ZB94Q is also £13.50 and states neither pot nor height. Leave that row when you need a size. B0HL95LBNS is the row that states both a pot and a supplied height. It is not a top pick, because none of the three has a review line.

Pots and the first winter

Little Red Robin can live in a patio pot if you move it on. The RHS spread is 1–1.5 m, so the later container is a tub, not the 11 cm or 3.5 inch pot it arrived in. Watering for the first two seasons is on the how to plant Photinia page. Buckingham Nurseries says protect young plants from frost in the first year, or plant in spring. An autumn delivery of about 25 cm in a thin pot is the case for fleece or for waiting. If you need foliage at about 2 m, switch to 'Red Robin' with one stated height.

Common questions

Will it make a 2 m privacy hedge?
A 2 m screen sits outside the RHS maximum of 1–1.5 m and outside nursery lines around 1 m. Little Red Robin is the low plant. Cover at that height is a job for 'Red Robin', which the RHS profile puts at 4–8 m if left to mature. Buy that cultivar only when the listing states one height. Buckingham's 38 cm spacing is for the compact hedge, not for that taller run.
Can Little Red Robin live in a patio pot?
It can, if you pot it on from the 11 cm or 3.5 inch mail-order pot. The RHS maximum spread is 1–1.5 m, so the later container is a tub. Keep the root ball moist when the compost surface looks damp. The first two years of container watering are on the Photinia planting page. A bright fence fits the cultivation line better than a covered alley, because the RHS shade lines conflict.
Which Amazon listing states a pot and a supplied height?
Only Chelsea Direct B0HL95LBNS states both. The recorded price is £14.40, the pot is 11 cm, and a bullet says about 25 cm supplied. A separate field says 1 m. Portal Cool B0BR7ZGCD1 at £13.50 states a 3.5 inch pot and no height. Portal Cool B0BR7ZB94Q at £13.50 states neither. None of the three has an amazon.co.uk star rating.
Why does one height field say 1 metre when the bullet says 25 cm?
On B0HL95LBNS, about 25 cm is the supplied plant in the 11 cm pot. The 1 m field sits near Thompson & Morgan's 100 cm and the RHS shop's 1 m. Read 25 cm as the parcel and 1 m as a mature claim if you use it. They are not two readings of one shoot.
Does Little Red Robin need frost cover in the first winter?
Buckingham Nurseries says protect young plants from frost in the first year, or plant in spring. That fits an autumn delivery of about 25 cm in an 11 cm pot on a patio. Shelter it, or wait until spring, if you cannot plant before winter. A shrub that has already wintered in the ground is outside that advice.
