Miscanthus comparison 2026

The best Miscanthus plants, compared.

Top pick: Carbeth Morning Light, three 9 cm pots – The title states Miscanthus sinensis and Morning Light, the pack of three 9 cm pots agrees, and the unit price is the lowest among the Morning Light pots. Best value: Carbeth Chinese silver grass, one 9 cm pot – The lowest price for a live Morning Light pot in this set, at about £10.99, if you read the bullets rather than the title alone. Updated October 2026.

Miscanthus in a UK garden is usually Miscanthus sinensis, Chinese silver grass. It is a deciduous clump-forming grass with late-summer plumes and stems that stand through winter. You are choosing a named young plant, a plug, or a seed packet. A suitable one has a cultivar name you can read, and a pot or pack size that stays the same from the title to the details. A photograph of a mature plume does not describe a young liner. Miscanthus × giganteus is the sterile biomass hybrid, and miscanthus horse bedding is the crop product. RHS hardiness for the species is H6, hardy throughout the UK. Give it full sun and moist, well-drained soil, and protect the crown from winter wet. A height of 9 cm on a listing is the pot. RHS lists Morning Light at 1–1.5 m tall and 0.5–1 m wide. The species maximum is 2.5–4 m. Seed labelled only as the species will not come true to a named cultivar. Cultivar, pack size and a believable height are set out in the [miscanthus buying guide](/hub/ornamental-plants/miscanthus/sub/miscanthus-buying-guide).

The best Miscanthus plants in detail

Carbeth Morning Light, three 9 cm pots

Rank 1

Carbeth Morning Light, three 9 cm pots

∼£25

Our view

Carbeth lists three Miscanthus sinensis Morning Light plants in 9 cm pots at £24.99, about £8.33 a plant on this listing. The title names the species and the cultivar, and the pack stays at three, so the parcel is easier to read than the single-pot title. RHS lists this cultivar at 1–1.5 m tall and 0.5–1 m wide once mature, which is not what a 9 cm liner looks like in its first summer. Full sun is stated on the listing. The listing has no star rating and no review count, so this score is not a crowd verdict. No mature height is printed on the amazon.co.uk page itself. It is the top pick here when you want three matching named plants for a small drift, and a poor match if you expected a flowering clump in the first season.

Pros

  • Title states Miscanthus sinensis and Morning Light
  • Pack of three 9 cm pots agrees with itself
  • About £8.33 a plant, the lowest unit price among the Morning Light pots
  • Full sun is stated

Cons

  • 9 cm liners, not mature clumps
  • No star rating or review count on the listing
  • Listing does not print a mature height

Best for: A sunny border where you want three matching Morning Light plants and can wait for the RHS size of 1–1.5 m.

Less suitable: A balcony that needs one compact plant this season, or anyone expecting the silver look from a seed packet.

Carbeth Morning Light, two 9 cm pots

Rank 2

Carbeth Morning Light, two 9 cm pots

∼£19

Our view

This Carbeth page is two Morning Light plants in 9 cm pots at £18.99, about £9.50 each. The cultivar is in the title, which is clearer than the £10.99 listing whose headline only says Chinese silver grass. The species line on this listing is empty, so you are trusting the cultivar name rather than a printed Miscanthus sinensis line. Full sun is stated and the pack stays at two. There is still no amazon.co.uk star rating on the listing. Two plants suit a pair of matching clumps, though you pay more per plant than for the three-pack at £24.99. A 9 cm pot is the container on arrival, not the adult height, and the listing does not print the RHS band of 1–1.5 m.

Pros

  • Morning Light is named in the title
  • Pack of two 9 cm pots is consistent
  • Full sun is stated
  • A pair of plants for a matched border

Cons

  • Species is not stated on the listing
  • Higher price per plant than the three-pack
  • No review count on the listing
  • No mature height on the listing

Best for: Two matching Morning Light plants for a sunny border when you do not need a third.

Less suitable: A single plant on a tight budget, or sowing from seed.

Carbeth Chinese silver grass, one 9 cm pot

Rank 3

Carbeth Chinese silver grass, one 9 cm pot

∼£11

Our view

The single Carbeth pot is £10.99 for one 9 cm plant, the lowest price in this set for a live miscanthus. The title says Chinese silver grass and does not print Morning Light; the bullets do. The height attribute is 9 cm, the same figure as the pot, so that number is not an adult height. RHS still puts Morning Light at 1–1.5 m tall and 0.5–1 m wide once it fills out, which this listing does not state. Full sun and moderate watering are on the listing, and the species line is empty. There is no star rating. It is the best value here if you want one named plant and you will read the bullets, and a muddle if you treat 9 cm as the finished grass.

Pros

  • Lowest price for a live Morning Light pot in this set (£10.99)
  • Pack of one is consistent
  • Full sun is stated
  • Bullets name the cultivar

Cons

  • Title omits Morning Light
  • Height attribute repeats the 9 cm pot
  • Species line is empty
  • No reviews on the listing

Best for: One sunny border clump when you only need a single plant and you will check the bullets for Morning Light.

Less suitable: Anyone who buys from the title alone, or a screen that needs several plants this year.

Kleine Fontäne, three plugs

Rank 4

Kleine Fontäne, three plugs

∼£12

Our view

The plug listing is three Kleine Fontäne plants at £11.95, with a rootball of about 50 mm. That is three named plants for a little more than one 9 cm Morning Light at £10.99, though a plug is smaller than a 9 cm pot. The seller states 150 cm and partial shade. That height is the seller's figure, not an RHS measurement checked for this page, and the species line is empty. Bloom is listed as autumn and summer. No star rating is on the listing. Choose it when three small named plants at this price matter more than a 9 cm Morning Light pot, and skip it if the silver-edged Morning Light leaf is the look you searched for.

Pros

  • Cultivar Kleine Fontäne named, pack of three
  • £11.95 for three plants
  • Seller states 150 cm and partial shade
  • Rootball of about 50 mm is stated

Cons

  • A plug, not a 9 cm pot
  • Species is not stated
  • 150 cm is the seller's height, not an RHS figure
  • No reviews on the listing

Best for: Three small named plants when Kleine Fontäne is the cultivar you want and a 50 mm plug is enough to start.

Less suitable: A Morning Light foliage match, or a large specimen in the first year.

SAFLAX Miscanthus sinensis, 200 seeds

Rank 5

SAFLAX Miscanthus sinensis, 200 seeds

Our view

The plain SAFLAX packet is 200 Miscanthus sinensis seeds at £4.55, the lowest price in this set for a species name and a consistent count. There is no substrate, which is the difference from the £5.25 listing. No cultivar is printed, so you are not buying Morning Light. The seller again says about 2 m, and sun is not stated. No amazon.co.uk stars are on the listing. Seed of the species is a different job from a cloned Morning Light plant: leaf and plume habit can vary. It is the cheapest clear packet here, and a weak substitute if the silver edge is the reason you searched.

Pros

  • Lowest price in the set at £4.55
  • 200 seeds and the species is named
  • Pack count is consistent
  • Costs less than the generic titles that clash on the piece count

Cons

  • No cultivar name
  • No substrate in the packet
  • No sun line and no reviews
  • Will not match Morning Light

Best for: Raising unnamed Miscanthus sinensis from seed when you already have compost and the look may vary.

Less suitable: A named silver-edged clump, or a garden that needs a plant in the ground this month.

SAFLAX Miscanthus sinensis, 200 seeds with soil

Rank 6

SAFLAX Miscanthus sinensis, 200 seeds with soil

Our view

SAFLAX lists 200 Miscanthus sinensis seeds with substrate at £5.25. The species is named and the count is 200, which is clearer than the generic titles that disagree with themselves. No cultivar is named, so the packet will not come true to Morning Light. The seller height is about 2 m, a seller line rather than the RHS species maximum of 2.5–4 m. The planting-period attribute says autumn, and sun is not stated. There is no star rating. The substrate is the extra against the £4.55 packet of the same seed. It suits sowing a variable species batch, not a silver border that has to match one cultivar.

Pros

  • Species stated and the count of 200 agrees
  • Growing substrate is included
  • £5.25, close to the plain SAFLAX packet
  • Clearer than the generic titles with two piece counts

Cons

  • No cultivar, so not Morning Light
  • Seller height of about 2 m is not a measured size
  • No sun line and no reviews
  • Seedlings will vary and take more than one season

Best for: Sowing Chinese silver grass from seed when variation is acceptable and you want substrate in the box.

Less suitable: A border that must look like Morning Light, or anyone who needs a plant this season.

Ipsa Miscanthus capensis, 10 seeds

Rank 7

Ipsa Miscanthus capensis, 10 seeds

Our view

Ipsa lists 10 seeds of Miscanthus capensis at £7.69. That is a different species from Miscanthus sinensis, so it is not Chinese silver grass and it is not Morning Light. The pack of 10 is consistent, which the generic titles are not. The listing attribute height is 65 cm and sun is partial shade, seller attributes rather than an RHS figure checked here. Bloom is printed as year round, which does not match the late-summer plume habit described for garden Miscanthus sinensis, and no stars are on the listing. Ten seeds at £7.69 is a higher price per seed than 200 Miscanthus sinensis seeds at £4.55. Buy it only if you specifically want Miscanthus capensis.

Pros

  • Species Miscanthus capensis is named
  • Pack of 10 seeds does not contradict itself
  • Partial shade and a 65 cm attribute are printed
  • £7.69 is below the generic clash titles

Cons

  • Not Miscanthus sinensis or Morning Light
  • 65 cm and year-round bloom are listing attributes, not an RHS check
  • Only 10 seeds
  • No reviews on the listing

Best for: A sower who wants Miscanthus capensis specifically and accepts the seller's 65 cm line.

Less suitable: A Chinese silver grass border or a Morning Light foliage match.

Generic miscanthus seed, 10, 33 or 1

Rank 8

Generic miscanthus seed, 10, 33 or 1

∼£14

Our view

This generic title reads Semi di erba Miscanthus 10 pezzi at £13.50. The same listing also prints 33 Pc in a bullet and a unit count of 1, so the piece counts disagree. Species and cultivar are both empty, and height and sun are empty too. There is no star rating. At £13.50 it costs more than the SAFLAX packet of 200 Miscanthus sinensis seeds at £4.55, which at least names the species and one count. You cannot tell from this listing what will germinate or how many seeds are in the envelope. Leave it unless a later amazon.co.uk page shows one count and a species you can check.

Pros

  • Shelf price is printed at £13.50
  • Sold as seed, not as artificial décor
  • The 10, 33 and 1 clash is visible before you pay

Cons

  • Title, bullet and unit count disagree
  • No species, cultivar, height or sun
  • Dearer than 200 SAFLAX seeds of a named species
  • No reviews on the listing

Best for: Only a buyer who already trusts this seller from outside the listing text.

Less suitable: A named border, a balcony pot, or any order where the seed count has to be clear.

Generic miscanthus seed, 10 or 1 at £13.50

Rank 9

Generic miscanthus seed, 10 or 1 at £13.50

∼£14

Our view

This third generic title is also Semi di erba Miscanthus 10 pezzi, priced at £13.50. The bullet says 1 Pc and the number of items is 1, so the piece counts disagree, as on the other generic titles. Species, cultivar, height and sun are blank. There is no star rating. The price matches the listing whose bullet says 33 Pc rather than 1 Pc, so the two £13.50 pages are not the same contradiction. Neither is a better buy than SAFLAX at £4.55 for 200 named-species seeds. Skip both for a UK border until one listing states one count and a species.

Pros

  • Price printed at £13.50
  • Conflict between 10 and 1 is visible
  • Sold as seed rather than a live plant you might expect to be established

Cons

  • Title says 10 and the bullet says 1
  • No species or cultivar
  • Same money as another generic listing that claims 33 pieces
  • No reviews, height or sun

Best for: Only if you have a source outside this listing that identifies the packet.

Less suitable: A shopper who needs a cultivar name or a seed count that stays the same from title to bullet.

Generic miscanthus seed, 10 or 1 at £14.45

Rank 10

Generic miscanthus seed, 10 or 1 at £14.45

∼£14

Our view

Another Semi di erba Miscanthus 10 pezzi listing, this one at £14.45. The title says 10, while a bullet says 1 Pc and the number of items is 1, so the piece counts disagree. Species, cultivar, height and sun are all empty, and the material line is empty as well. There is no star rating. It is the dearest of the generic seed titles in this batch, and it still does not tell you whether you are buying Chinese silver grass. SAFLAX states 200 Miscanthus sinensis seeds at £4.55 with one count. Use this page only as a warning about titles that look like a ten-pack and then say one piece.

Pros

  • Price is stated at £14.45
  • The 10-versus-1 clash is on the page
  • It is labelled as seed

Cons

  • Highest price among the generic seed titles here
  • Title and bullet disagree on the piece count
  • No species or cultivar
  • No height, sun, material or reviews

Best for: No clear garden job in this comparison until the listing states one species and one count.

Less suitable: Anyone comparing it with a named 9 cm plant or with the 200-seed SAFLAX packets.

How we compared

Ten amazon.co.uk miscanthus listings were scored from the stored listings only. This is not a lab test. None of these listings prints a star rating or a review count, so Amazon stars were not weighted. Identity is 30, pack consistency is 25, form for an ornamental clump is 25, and price against what the listing actually states is 20. The top pick is the clearest named three-plant pack. The best value is the single pot whose bullets name the cultivar. The cheapest clear species seed is a different job, so it is not the best-value plant.

1

Identity

30%

Species and cultivar named on the listing. A cultivar only in the bullets scores lower than a cultivar in the title. A different species scores lower than Miscanthus sinensis.

2

Pack consistency

25%

One count that agrees from the title to the bullet. A clash such as 10, 33 and 1 scores near the bottom.

3

Form for an ornamental clump

25%

A named 9 cm plant scores above a named plug, which scores above species seed with a clear count. Generic seed with no species scores lowest.

4

Price against the listing

20%

Unit price counts only after the format is clear. A cheap packet is not rewarded for reading as if it were Morning Light.

Miscanthus buying guide

Start with the product type, then the cultivar and whose height figure you are reading, then the pack size on arrival, then sun and soil, then price after the format is clear. None of these listings was grown on as a trial, and none prints a star rating.

What to check before you buy miscanthus

A live named plant, a plug, or seed. Seed labelled only Miscanthus sinensis will not come true to Morning Light. RHS lists Morning Light at 1–1.5 m tall and 0.5–1 m wide. The species maximum is 2.5–4 m. BBC Gardeners' World puts garden cultivars at about 80 cm to 2.5 m. A listing height of 9 cm is the pot. Do not collapse those heights into one number. These listings run from one 9 cm pot to three, three plugs of about 50 mm, or 200 seeds.

Best for

  • A sunny border and three matching Morning Light plants you can wait to size
  • One 9 cm plant when you will read the bullets for the cultivar
  • Sowing unnamed Miscanthus sinensis when variation is acceptable

Not ideal for

  • A mature plume in the first season from a 9 cm pot
  • A border that must match Morning Light if you buy species seed
  • A generic title whose piece count disagrees with itself

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

Reading 9 cm as the adult height

On the single pot, the height attribute is 9 cm, the same figure as the pot. RHS lists Morning Light at 1–1.5 m tall and 0.5–1 m wide once mature. The species maximum is 2.5–4 m.

  2. 2

Expecting seed to match a named cultivar

SAFLAX names Miscanthus sinensis and 200 seeds, and names no cultivar. Seedlings can vary in leaf and plume. A cloned Morning Light plant is a different purchase.

  3. 3

Cutting the clump down in autumn

Leave the stems through winter. BBC Gardeners' World says early March, when new growth shows. The RHS says mid-March to April, cutting low and sparing new shoots.

What to weigh up

Cultivar and a height you can believe

High

The first line to read is the species or cultivar, not the plume photograph. Morning Light is the silver-edged garden cultivar RHS lists at 1–1.5 m tall and 0.5–1 m wide. The species maximum is 2.5–4 m. BBC Gardeners' World puts garden cultivars at about 80 cm to 2.5 m. Keep those figures separate. A listing height of 9 cm is the pot. On the single Carbeth pot the title says Chinese silver grass and the bullets name Morning Light, so the cultivar is easy to miss.

Pack, form and price after the format is clear

High

These listings run from one 9 cm pot to three, three plugs with a rootball of about 50 mm, or 200 seeds. A named 9 cm plant is the form for an ornamental clump. A named plug is smaller. Species seed with one count is a sowing job. Generic seed with no species, and a title that says 10 while a bullet says 1 or 33, is the bottom of that order. Price comes after that. About £4.55 is 200 named-species seeds. About £5.25 adds substrate. About £10.99 is one 9 cm plant. About £11.95 is three plugs.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

A sunny border

You want the silver look of Morning Light and you can wait two or more years for full size. Three Carbeth Miscanthus sinensis Morning Light plants in 9 cm pots are the top pick, about £24.99. RHS lists this cultivar at 1–1.5 m tall and 0.5–1 m wide once mature, which a 9 cm liner will not reach in its first summer.

Sowing the species

You are raising unnamed Miscanthus sinensis from a 200-seed packet and you accept that seedlings will vary. The plain SAFLAX packet is about £4.55, with the species named and one count. It will not come true to Morning Light, and there is no star rating on the listing.

One drained pot

You need one plant for a sunny spot, not a 2–4 m species claim and not three liners. The single Carbeth 9 cm pot is the best value at about £10.99. The title says Chinese silver grass; the bullets name Morning Light. The 9 cm height attribute is the pot.

Common questions about Miscanthus plants

Which miscanthus is the top pick in this comparison?
The top pick is three Carbeth Miscanthus sinensis Morning Light plants in 9 cm pots, about £24.99, about £8.33 a plant. The title names the species and the cultivar, and the pack stays at three. RHS lists this cultivar at 1–1.5 m tall and 0.5–1 m wide once mature, which a 9 cm liner will not reach in its first summer. Full sun is stated. There is no star rating, so the badge is listing clarity, not a crowd verdict.
Which miscanthus is the best value?
The best value is one Carbeth 9 cm pot at about £10.99, the lowest price in this set for a live miscanthus. The title says Chinese silver grass and does not print Morning Light; the bullets do. The height attribute is 9 cm, the same figure as the pot, so that number is not an adult height. The species line is empty and there is no star rating. It suits one sunny clump if you read the bullets.
How much do these miscanthus listings cost on amazon.co.uk?
Stored amazon.co.uk prices in this set run from about £4.55 to £24.99. That is this batch, not a live category scrape. About £4.55–£5.25 is 200 Miscanthus sinensis seeds, with or without substrate. About £7.69 is Miscanthus capensis seed. About £10.99 is one 9 cm plant and about £11.95 is three plugs. About £13.50–£14.45 is generic seed. About £18.99 is two 9 cm plants and about £24.99 is three. No large specimen pot is in the set.
Is a height of 9 cm the adult size of miscanthus?
No. A listing height of 9 cm is the pot. RHS lists Morning Light at 1–1.5 m tall and 0.5–1 m wide once mature. The species maximum on the RHS page is 2.5–4 m. BBC Gardeners' World puts garden cultivars at about 80 cm to 2.5 m. Do not collapse those heights into one number. Seller lines here also say about 2 m for species seed, 150 cm for one plug cultivar, and 65 cm for Miscanthus capensis. Those are seller attributes.
Will miscanthus seed match Morning Light?
Seed labelled only Miscanthus sinensis will not come true to Morning Light. The SAFLAX packets name the species and state 200 seeds, at about £4.55, or about £5.25 with substrate. No cultivar is printed. Leaf and plume habit can vary, and seedlings take more than one season. A named 9 cm plant is a different job from a species packet. Generic titles that disagree on the piece count do not name a cultivar either.
Is miscanthus illegal to grow in a UK garden?
Miscanthus sinensis is not native to Britain or Ireland. BBC Gardeners' World says miscanthus is invasive in parts of the United States but not a UK problem in the same way. Checked extracts of Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 Schedule 9 and of the Invasive Alien Species (Enforcement and Permitting) Order 2019 do not name Miscanthus. Do not apply the GOV.UK keep-and-sell ban to this genus. Do not dump plants in the wild. Fertile Miscanthus sinensis can set seed.
When should you cut miscanthus back?
Leave the stems through winter. BBC Gardeners' World says cut in early March, when new growth shows. The RHS says mid-March to April for miscanthus, cutting low and sparing new shoots. Do not cut the clump down in autumn. Divide infrequently, in late spring, and keep the pieces large. In the ground, established plants are not routinely fed. In a pot, keep the compost moist and the pot drained. A crown too heavy to lift is a job for two people.
Do these listings show a UK plant passport?
Online sellers of plants for planting must be authorised to issue a UK plant passport on distance sales. These listings show no passport number. That is unknown, not proof of a breach. A dead plant, or a packet that does not match the title, is a matter for the seller. If you want a smaller plant for the same sunny, drained spot, compare a lavender plant.

Our verdict

The top pick is three Carbeth Miscanthus sinensis Morning Light plants in 9 cm pots at about £24.99, about £8.33 a plant. The title names the species and the cultivar, and the pack stays at three. The best value is the single 9 cm pot at about £10.99: the lowest price here for a live plant whose bullets name Morning Light, though the title only says Chinese silver grass and the height attribute repeats the pot size. The £4.55 SAFLAX packet is the cheapest clear species seed and will not come true to Morning Light, so it is not the best-value plant. No listing in this set has a star rating.
