Miscanthus seeds or plants: which to order

Updated: 22 October 2026

The photo on the packet shows a tall silver grass in flower, but the text may only say Miscanthus sinensis, 200 seeds, and no cultivar name. Miscanthus seeds or plants is the fork in the road: species seedlings with natural variation, or a cloned young plant whose label says Morning Light. The [miscanthus comparison](/hub/ornamental-plants/miscanthus) lists the kept listings. This page is the format choice only. Peter F. compared the stored packets and pots, not a germination trial. What seed can and cannot be

Miscanthus sinensis from seed is the species, not a named cultivar true from every grain. Morning Light is a selected clone with silver-edged leaves. In this batch you buy it as a plant, not as seed. JustSeed and Johnsons sell species seed sown from January to May at about 15–20 °C, with seedlings in four to six weeks and flowers the following year in their copy. A US warning about selling species seed is not UK law, and BBC Gardeners' World still treats garden miscanthus as a normal UK ornamental. Miscanthus × giganteus, the sterile biomass hybrid, is grown from rhizomes, and none of these packets is that crop.

The packets in this set

SAFLAX lists 200 Miscanthus sinensis seeds at about £4.55 without substrate, or about £5.25 with substrate in the title. Both name the species and the count. The 70p gap is the sowing medium, not a cultivar. The seller height is about 2 m, and there is no star rating. Three generic titles that read Semi di erba Miscanthus 10 pezzi sit at about £13.50 to £14.45. Headlines suggest ten pieces, bullets say one or thirty-three, and species and cultivar are empty. They cost more than 200 named-species seeds. Skip them unless a later page shows one count and Miscanthus sinensis. Miscanthus capensis is ten seeds at about £7.69. It is not Chinese silver grass. The 65 cm line and partial shade are seller text.

What a young plant or plug gives you

Carbeth's 9 cm pots ship Morning Light as one, two or three plants at about £10.99, £18.99 and £24.99. The bullets name the cultivar even when the single-pot title only says Chinese silver grass. Expect a liner, not a 2 litre clump in year one. RHS mature size remains about 1–1.5 m tall over time. Kleine Fontäne is three plugs at about £11.95, cultivar named, with a smaller rootball than a 9 cm pot. On the single Carbeth line, 9 cm is the pot, not the adult grass. That check is in buy miscanthus UK. These live listings do not show a UK plant passport number.

Which to order

Order plain SAFLAX seed at about £4.55 when you want 200 species grains, accept variation, and can wait more than one season. Order the substrate pack at about £5.25 when that medium is worth 70p. Order one 9 cm Morning Light pot at about £10.99 when a single clone matters and you will read the bullets. Order the three-pack at about £24.99 for a matching drift, not for one balcony pot. Order Kleine Fontäne plugs when three named plants at plug size beat one Morning Light pot. Seed is the lowest shelf price only for the sowing job. Job-fit is on best miscanthus.

Common questions

Will seed give me Morning Light?
No. Species seed produces variable Miscanthus sinensis seedlings. Morning Light is a clone, and in this batch you buy it as a 9 cm plant. JustSeed and Johnsons describe sowing from January to May at about 15–20 °C. That shop copy does not make a SAFLAX packet match one cultivar.
What is the difference between the two SAFLAX packets?
Both are 200 Miscanthus sinensis seeds. The listing at about £5.25 includes substrate in the title. The listing at about £4.55 does not. Species and count match on both in the stored listings. There is no cultivar line on either, and sun is not stated. The 70p gap is the sowing medium, not a named variety.
How long until seed flowers?
Johnsons-style shop copy often mentions flowers the following year, after sowing from January to May and seedlings in four to six weeks. That is their copy, not a measured result for every amazon.co.uk packet. A 9 cm plant may also take seasons to plume in a cool summer. This page does not quote a germination percentage.
Why do three listings say 10 pieces and also 1 or 33?
Those titles read Semi di erba Miscanthus 10 pezzi, at about £13.50 to £14.45, and the same pages also say one piece or thirty-three. Species and cultivar are empty. Treat the count as unreliable until one count and one species appear. They cost more than 200 named-species seeds at about £4.55.
Is Miscanthus capensis Chinese silver grass?
No. It is a different species, listed here as ten seeds at about £7.69. The seller lines are 65 cm and partial shade. It does not substitute for Miscanthus sinensis Morning Light. The pack count is consistent, unlike the generic titles, and the plant is still the wrong species for a Chinese silver grass border.
When is a named 9 cm plant the clearer buy?
When the leaf must match Morning Light, when you want a clone this season rather than a tray of seedlings, and when you accept liner size. One pot is about £10.99 if you read the bullets. Three plants are about £24.99. The packet at about £4.55 remains the species sow, not the clone.
