Raspberries in pots

Updated: 22 October 2026

Your balcony has room for one container, and an amazon.co.uk listing shows a raspberry in a 9 cm pot. Raspberries in pots can work in the UK, but the pot in the photograph is almost never the pot you harvest from, and not every cane in the comparison is honest about height once it matures. Prices and review lines for the kept plants are on the [Raspberry bush comparison](/hub/ornamental-plants/raspberry-bush). Peter F. checked the pot sizes on those listings against RHS container guidance. This is not a patio trial. The pot in the parcel is not the pot you crop in

Glen Ample, Cascade Delight and Tulameen Pearl ship at £9.99 in 9 cm pots. Fallgold and Sugana lines sit at £16.99 in 12 cm or 13 cm pots, or with a title around 25–35 cm on arrival. Those are postage pots, not the volume roots need for repeated cropping. A review that says the plant looked tiny is often a starter cane set against a stock photo of a wired row. Pot on the same season, or plant into a prepared bed. A summer cane left in a 9 cm pot through a dry July is under stress, Glen Ample included. Treat the supply pot as transit packaging. Bare-root versus a posted pot is on the raspberry plants buying guide.

How big the container should be

The RHS grows raspberries in containers only with compact cultivars, in a pot at least 40 cm wide and 30 cm deep. That is the minimum for one cane kept for several years. A 60 cm tub is headroom for more canes or easier watering, not a different rule. Height matters as much as width. Sugana B0CTTLB88M states a mature height of 1.5 to 2.5 m, which is a tall whip on a balcony. Summer types such as Glen Ample are often near 1.8 m in UK guidance and still want support. Autumn primocanes are usually shorter in reference material, and heavy fruit still bends an unstaked cane.

Compost, water and a support

Fill the final pot with about two thirds peat-free multipurpose compost and one third peat-free John Innes No. 3, or a similar loam mix, as the RHS suggests for raspberries in containers. Loam adds weight on a windy balcony. Keep the drainage holes open. A saucer left full for a week rots roots. Water when the top few centimetres dry, with a deep soak rather than a daily dribble. A pot on an open railing dries faster than one against a wall. There is no universal litre schedule. Stake, wigwam or short obelisk before the fruit loads the stems. The floricane or primocane cut does not change in a pot. Type is on summer vs autumn raspberries.

Which of these plants mention pots

Glen Ample, Cascade Delight, Tulameen Pearl and both Fallgold listings mention a large container or a patio pot in some form. You still supply that pot. Dispatch size stays 9 cm or 12 cm. Sugana B09BHVDC6N does not state a compact height. Sugana B0CTTLB88M prints 1.5 to 2.5 m, and its star line is 3.5 from 10 reviews, the weakest file in the set. A narrow balcony is the wrong site for that cane. A patio bullet does not turn a tall floricane into Ruby Beauty. That dwarf name is on RHS pages and is not in this Amazon set. One 40 cm pot and no wires suits an autumn primocane with the word printed on the listing better than a summer row on a railing. Choose the ground if you want wires, if you cannot lift a loam-filled 40 cm pot, or if you will not water in a hot week. The £9.99 pot is a starter.

Common questions

Can raspberries grow in pots?
Yes, if the cultivar is reasonably compact, the final pot is at least 40 cm wide and 30 cm deep, and you accept extra watering and staking compared with a row. The RHS limits container growing to compact cultivars. The 9 cm or 12 cm pot in the parcel is not that container.
Is a 9 cm pot big enough to crop in?
No. It is a delivery size for Glen Ample, Cascade Delight and Tulameen Pearl at about £9.99. Pot on the same season into the final container, or plant out into prepared soil. Leaving a summer cane in a 9 cm pot through a dry July stresses the plant.
Which raspberry is best for a patio?
In this set, autumn primocane listings with clear wording suit a single 40 cm pot better than a tall summer floricane that wants wires. Fallgold B09QGZ56D3 prints primocane. Confirm the ASIN text, because the other Fallgold page does not. Ruby Beauty and other dwarf names are not in this comparison.
Do pot raspberries need a wigwam?
They need support once fruit swells: a stake, a wigwam of canes, or a short frame, especially on an exposed balcony. Summer canes lean under a crop. Autumn canes are often shorter and still snap if you leave them floppy. Fit the support before the stems split.
How often do I water?
Whenever the upper few centimetres of compost dry in warm weather, with a deep soak rather than a daily dribble. Exposed pots dry faster than ground soil, and a pot against a wall dries more slowly than one on an open railing. There is no single litre timetable for every balcony.
Will a tall summer cane stay in a pot?
It can, with a container at least 40 cm wide and 30 cm deep, regular water, and ties to a sturdy support. Summer types are often around 1.8 m in UK guidance, and one Sugana listing here states 1.5 to 2.5 m. Without that volume and those ties, height becomes a liability on a windy patio.
