Buddleia davidii or Flower Power

Updated: 22 October 2026

You are choosing between a Buddleja davidii type in this set, tricolour or White Profusion, and Carbeth's Flower Power listings. The photographs can make them look like colour options on one shrub. They are different plants, with different flower shapes and different size sources. Scores sit on the [buddleia comparison](/hub/ornamental-plants/buddleia). Peter F. checked the listings and public UK sources on 21 October 2026. There was no side-by-side growing trial. Two plants, not two colours of one plant

Buddleja davidii carries slender spikes. On the RHS species page the colours run from white to crimson. In this set, tricolour is a Carbeth colour phrase on the pink, white and purple lines. It is not an RHS cultivar name checked for this page. White Profusion is a named davidii cultivar, with white flowers and a yellow eye on RHS pages. Flower Power is Buddleja × weyeriana 'Bicolor' on the RHS plant page, with the synonyms Bicolor and Flower Power. Flowers open from purple buds into globular clusters of pink and orange. That ball shape is the quick mark against a davidii spike. A tricolour listing stays a davidii-type plant. The two groups are separate listings, with separate prices and separate review pools.

The height stack, including 2 metres and 120 cm

RHS 'Bicolor' is deciduous, for full sun, with ultimate height 2.5–4 metres and spread 1.5–2.5 metres. Buddleja davidii on the RHS is 2.5–4 metres tall, with a wider spread. Hard pruning on both holds roughly 1.8–2.4 metres in the growing guide. Thompson & Morgan and Dobies quote about 200 cm and compact for Flower Power. Webbs Direct prints up to 120 cm tall and 100 cm wide on one Flower Power page. The Buddleja Collection site states eventual height 200 cm for × weyeriana Bicolor. Carbeth prints 2 metres and a compact bullet. Keep 120 cm, 2 metres and 4 metres as separate claims. The amazon.co.uk compact line is the weakest guide to mature size. White Profusion's height field is 9 cm, the pot. The RHS shop page prints about 3 metres by 5 metres. Tricolour packs print 60 cm, and a bullet on the three-pot pack says 2 metres.

What this set will send you

Davidii-type listings are B0BG8JCLG4, one 2 litre tricolour at about £19.99 and the top pick, and B0BG8LXS7X at about £46.99, which shares those 425 reviews and adds an evergreen bullet. White Profusion, B0B8VHVJ4L, is three 9 cm pots at about £14.45 with no reviews. Flower Power is B0F6D4D66S at about £24.99, titled as two 2 litre pots with unit count 1.0, and B0F6D4FRH3 at about £34.99. Both share 3.7 from 10. Choose the tricolour if you want the widest review pool and you accept a colour-mix claim. Choose White Profusion for a white davidii if you can buy with no reviews. Choose Flower Power if pink-orange globular flowers matter and you will hard-prune each year. If you are still unsure, use the flower shape. A slender spike is the davidii-type stock. Orange-pink balls are Flower Power. Neither group is the Buzz dwarf.

Same spring cut, different seeding caution

Both B. davidii and B. × weyeriana are on the RHS late March to mid-April hard-prune list, because they flower on the current season's wood. Cut depth, and the alternifolia exception, are on how to prune buddleia. Seeding notes in UK guidance focus on B. davidii spreading in the wild. Deadhead spent spikes on either type if seedlings near walls and paving worry you. Flower Power is not described here as sterile. Notes on cultivar seed set vary, and an isolated plant can behave differently. That is not a claim that 'Bicolor' is seed-free.

Common questions

Is Flower Power a Buddleja davidii?
No. It is Buddleja × weyeriana 'Bicolor', and Flower Power is a synonym on the RHS plant page. The flowers are globular clusters of pink and orange, opening from purple buds. A davidii spike is a different shape. Tricolour on a Carbeth listing does not convert a davidii plant into that hybrid.
Will Flower Power stay at 2 metres, as the amazon bullet says?
The Carbeth height attribute says 2 metres, and a bullet says compact. The RHS maximum for 'Bicolor' is 2.5–4 metres. Other retailers quote from 120 cm to about 200 cm. Plan on a hard prune each spring. A fixed 2 metre cap is one seller's figure.
Is the tricolour one plant with three colours or three plants?
The one-pot listing, B0BG8JCLG4, is one plant in a 2 litre pot at about £19.99. The three-pot title claims three 2 litre pots at about £46.99, and one bullet describes three plants in a single pot. Count separate rootballs when the parcel arrives. Reviews often show fewer than three colours.
How big is White Profusion if the amazon height says 9 cm?
Nine centimetres matches the pot in the title, three 9 cm pots at about £14.45. The RHS shop page for the cultivar prints eventual height about 3 metres and spread about 5 metres if it is grown on. There is no star line on the listing to cross-check arrival size.
Which one is more likely to seed around the garden?
Deadheading matters for both if seedlings near walls and paving worry you. UK non-native species notes put the emphasis on B. davidii seed spread in the wild. This page does not call Flower Power sterile. Site and maintenance matter more than which colour you preferred on the listing.
