Traps

Common questions about traps

Which traps does this hub compare?
This hub has eleven amazon.co.uk comparisons: mouse traps, electric rat traps, live traps, cockroach traps, fruit fly traps, yellow sticky traps, moth traps, wasp traps, vole traps, marten live traps and raccoon traps. Each page uses stored listing prices, stars and review counts. It is not a laboratory test.
Are rodent glue traps lawful for a householder in England?
In England, from 31 July 2024, a householder who sets a glue trap for a rodent commits an offence unless a licensed pest controller holds a glue-trap licence. That point is on the live-trap comparison. A cockroach glue card in the cockroach comparison is a folded insect monitor, not that rodent glue trap. The mouse comparison lists the Glue Traps (Offences) Act 2022 and the Scottish and Welsh government notes.
Should you buy a mouse trap or a rat trap?
A house mouse has a body of about 7–9 cm (RSPCA). The mouse comparison is snap six-packs or live-catch tunnels, from about £8.49 to about £19.99. A brown rat needs a rat-sized tunnel on the electric rat comparison, or a rat cage on the live-trap comparison. A product title that says rat is not proof the chamber is rat-sized.
Will a wasp trap empty a nest?
A wasp trap in this comparison is a reusable chamber. You add a liquid, then hang or stand it near a patio, a bin or ripening fruit. It is not a way to destroy a nest. None of the ten listings includes a lure. Shelf prices in that comparison run from about £5.89 to £12.99.
Do clothes moth traps stop the damage?
The moth comparison is fold-up glue boards and pheromone pads, from about £7.99 to £17.98, for holes in wool, cashmere or carpet. The larvae do the eating. The boards catch adult males of the species the lure is built for, usually the common clothes moth. Moths in a cereal cupboard need a different pheromone.
Can you trap and release a pine marten or a raccoon?
A product title that says marten is not a licence. The marten comparison says the pine marten is fully protected, and that England requires a Natural England licence and an AIHTS trap. The raccoon comparison says you must not release a raccoon you have caught, and treats raccoons as a listed invasive species.
Are yellow sticky traps the same as a fruit fly trap?
Yellow sticky traps are glue cards you push into compost or hang above a plant, from about £2.99 to £7.49, bought for fungus gnats and a look at whitefly. A fruit fly trap is usually a bottle of fermenting-fruit lure, a yellow card, or a plug-in UV light, from about £6.99 to £37.99. Flies on damp compost are usually fungus gnats, not kitchen vinegar flies.
What is the difference between a vole trap and a mole trap here?
The vole comparison runs from about £4.99 to £34.39 and mixes a spring trap for a shallow run with mole claws and tunnel traps. Moles throw up hills and eat soil invertebrates. Field voles and bank voles eat plants and use surface runs. The named top pick is the Swissinno SuperCat with probe, for that shallow-run job.
