How to set a rat trap without a smashed finger

Updated: October 2026

You already have a snap or a covered snap, and the risky moment is the one where the bar is armed before the bait is on and your fingers are still in the way. Rats also ignore a new object in the middle of the floor. This page is the order that avoids both mistakes: bait first, place it on a run, set it as an adult, and check it. The [Rat trap comparison](/hub/traps/rat-trap) is the table if the trap you own is the wrong size. Dogs, sheds, and garages are on [rat trap safe for dogs](/hub/traps/rat-trap/sub/rat-trap-pets-and-sheds). A qualifying amazon.co.uk purchase can earn us a commission, at no extra cost to you.

Bait before the trap is armed

Put the bait on while the bar is still free. Havant Borough Council says peanut butter, and not to set the trap until that bait has been taken. Roshield’s leaflet, from Fort Products, says fix the bait so a rat cannot lift it off, and that cheese is a poor default. Rentokil also names chocolate spread or tuna, and gloves so the trap does not smell of your hands. A loose chunk that never touches the plate leaves you with an empty, still-set trap. On Cleaneaty, load the cup from underneath, then the clamp. On Black Cat the bait is a firm piece under the lever. On Kwaiyole, bait under the cover first. On SOLOKIT the cable tie is the set, with the lid shut. On Rat Reaper, fill the pod from the sachets, then the trigger. If you are still choosing the mechanism, start from the best rat traps shortlist.

Put it where the rat already walks

Rats travel along edges. Put the trap at the wall and the floor, at a right angle, which is the placement in the Roshield leaflet. East Staffordshire says the same: baited break-backs next to walls, checked daily. The middle of a garage floor is where you can see the trap and the rat does not walk. The Roshield four-pack is described for a low to medium infestation, so one trap on one wall can miss the run. Havant says tether it with wire so a rat, a fox, or a cat cannot drag it off. A Cleaneaty review describes a trap taken by a fox. Weight an RRT4 so it does not flip. Preston City Council notes that a rat can use a gap of about 15 mm, and that pet food should not sit loose in a shed. Close the seed bag the same afternoon.

Give a wary rat a day or two

Rentokil calls the wariness neophobia: the trap can sit untouched while the rat walks around it. Fort Products talks about days, and about four weeks for their own trap, not a promise that yours ends on a timetable. Havant’s version is to leave the trap baited and unset until the bait has been taken twice, then set it. If nothing touches it, move a metre along the same wall, not into the centre of the room. Children do not set these traps. Black Cat and Mamax say adults only. Practise unbaited, pointed away from your hand.

Check, gloves, and a miss

Check a snap at least daily, which is what East Staffordshire and Sheffield ask for. A live cage is shorter: twice a day is a rule of thumb, because the Animal Welfare Act 2006 still applies to an animal under your control. Drowning is not an acceptable way to deal with a catch. This page does not describe a killing blow. If you cannot deal with an injured animal, call a pest controller. Wear gloves, cover cuts, and wash. The Health and Safety Executive notes around 50 leptospirosis cases a year in the UK, some acquired abroad. Double-bag a body if your council sheet says so. Bait gone and the bar still set means the bait was stealable. If rats continue after you have proofed the gaps, tell the council under the 1949 Act when numbers are substantial and the land is not agricultural. Updated 19 October 2026. Not a lab test.

Common questions

Do you bait before or after you set the bar?
Before. Load the cup, the lever, or the pod while the spring is free, then set. Arming first and adding peanut butter afterwards puts your fingers on the plate. Cleaneaty and Mamax are built around that order. SOLOKIT uses the cable tie instead of an open bar, and you still bait before you arm it.
Where does the trap sit relative to the wall?
At the wall and floor junction, at a right angle, on the run the droppings already mark. Not in the middle of the room. Tether it if it can be dragged, and weight an open Roshield snap so it does not flip. One trap on the wrong wall loses to two traps on the used edge.
Should you set it on the first night?
Often no. Havant’s tip is to let the bait be taken twice, then set. Rats are wary of new objects, so an armed trap on night one can sit while they walk around it. Once you know the run is active, set it and check the next day. Untouched bait means move the trap along the wall, not into the open floor.
How do you keep your fingers off the bar?
Keep them behind the mechanism, bait first, and do not let a child set it. Use the rear release on a Black Cat only after you have learned it, because reviewers still trap fingers. On a SOLOKIT the cable tie is the set, so you are not holding the bar. If the spring is too strong for your hand, choose a covered set or ask someone else to arm it.
How often do you check?
Daily for a snap, which is the council line, and more often if you have already had an incomplete kill. For a live cage, twice a day is a rule of thumb under animal-welfare law. Do not leave a catch over a weekend because the trap is in the shed. Gloves on, cover cuts, wash, double-bag.
