Best rat trap UK: snap, box, electric, or cage

Updated: October 2026

You have found droppings along a shed wall, or scratching in a loft, and a search for the best rat trap UK mixes four machines under one phrase. An open snap, a covered snap, an electric plate, and a live cage solve different jobs. This page is that trade-off. The [Rat trap comparison](/hub/traps/rat-trap) is the table for this set, with shelf prices from £7.99 to £28.99. It does not crown one model. If you already know the choice is a spring or a plate, read [electric rat trap vs snap trap](/hub/traps/rat-trap/sub/rat-trap-snap-or-electric). Four traps, four jobs

An open snap is the usual buy when dogs, cats, and children stay off that floor. GERAWOO’s table says electric, but the bullets describe a spring, so it stays with the snaps. A covered snap is the same spring in a shell. SOLOKIT is two UK-made boxes, set with a cable tie that shows a firing. Rat Reaper is a dual-entry tunnel, 15 cm by 11 cm by 20 cm, with three peanut-butter sachets. The cover changes who can reach the bar. It does not turn a poor strike into a certain kill. Anyhall, at £25.49, is two live cages, 31.5 cm by 14.5 cm by 11.5 cm. A cage leaves you with a live rat. Twice-daily checks are a rule of thumb under the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

What UK rules remove from the basket

A glue board is not a household option. In England the Glue Traps (Offences) Act 2022 makes setting a rodent glue trap an offence from 31 July 2024 unless a professional holds a licence for an exceptional case. Wales made use unlawful from 17 October 2023, with no householder licence in that section. Scotland’s ban on use, supply, and possession has applied since 1 July 2026. Northern Ireland is not those three texts. Ordinary break-backs in England and Wales sit under the 1958 exemption to section 8 of the Pests Act 1954, for rats, mice, and other small ground vermin. That is not a certificate for every amazon.co.uk mechanism, and section 8 does not apply in Scotland. Releasing a grey squirrel is restricted by the 2019 invasive-species order. These sources do not name an offence for releasing a brown rat. A live rat under your control is still a welfare duty. Off agricultural land, substantial numbers need written notice to the council under the 1949 Act. That phrase is not a headcount.

Size, cover, and who else is in the room

Large on a title is not a measurement. Cleaneaty’s 14 cm by 7.5 cm by 7.3 cm plate is for large mice and small rats. Mamax states 140 mm by 76 mm. The Roshield RRT4 is described as made for rats, without a centimetre line. Some reviews say a full-grown brown rat is a tight fit. An open bar on a floor a dog uses is the wrong tool. Rat Reaper’s pet-safe title is not what the reviews show. That limit is on rat trap safe for dogs. Humane is a marketing word. UFAW’s aim is a well-designed snap, or a live catch followed by a quick kill. Bait and placement are on how to set a rat trap.

What the listings in this set cost

These are amazon.co.uk shelf prices, not a category average. GERAWOO is £7.99 for two and Cleaneaty is £10.59 for six. The Roshield boxes are £15.66 for two and the open snaps are £15.96 for four. Anyhall is £25.49, VeftBltrem is £25.99, and Sedilificum is £28.99. Stars do not follow the price. The open Roshield snaps are 4.2 from 7,320. VeftBltrem is 5.0 from two reviews. Sedilificum has no rating in the file. A 9,000 V claim with no UK reviews does not buy more evidence. Updated 19 October 2026. Not a lab test.

Common questions

Is a live cage the wrong purchase?
It is the wrong purchase if you want the animal dead inside the trap, or if you have no plan for a live rat the next morning. Anyhall’s two cages are 4.4 from 541 ratings, and reviewers do catch rats in gardens. The door only holds the animal. You still check it, and you still deal with what is inside. A grey squirrel on the same run is a separate release rule.
Are glue traps something you can set at home?
Not in England, Wales, or Scotland, on the dates above. England allows a licensed professional in an exceptional case. Wales and Scotland do not offer that householder route in the texts cited here. Northern Ireland is not decided by those three laws. A snap, a covered snap, or a cage is the legal DIY set. A glue board is not a budget alternative.
What does large mean on a 14 cm trap?
On Cleaneaty it means the bullets’ own limit: large mice and small rats, on a plate of 14 cm by 7.5 cm by 7.3 cm. Mamax is 140 mm by 76 mm, and some UK reviewers say a full-grown rat is tight. Roshield’s RRT4 is the pack described as made for rats. Measure the claim against the centimetres, not against the word large in the title.
Is humane a standard you can shop by?
No. The word appears on kill snaps and on live cages, and it is not a UK test mark in this set. UFAW’s point is the quality of the kill, or a live catch followed by a quick dispatch, and a poor snap that injures fails that test. Read the reviews for injured animals and for plastic that breaks, and ignore the adjective.
When should you tell the council instead of buying another pack?
Tell the local council in writing when rats or mice are present in substantial numbers on land that is not agricultural. That duty sits in the 1949 Act, and it is not a count of five or ten. Call a pest controller as well when proofing has failed, when the site handles food, or when the building is shared. Another trap does not replace that notice.
