Rat trap safe for dogs, sheds, and garages

Updated: October 2026

A dog sleeps in the kitchen, a cat works the garage, or a child cuts through the shed, and an open snap on that floor is the wrong tool even when the reviews say it kills rats. You need a place the paw cannot reach, or you do not set the trap. This page stays on bystanders and on outbuildings. The full setting order is on [how to set a rat trap](/hub/traps/rat-trap/sub/rat-trap-how-to-set). Mechanisms and prices are on the [rat trap buying guide](/hub/traps/rat-trap/sub/rat-trap-buying-guide) and in the [Rat trap comparison](/hub/traps/rat-trap). Open snaps and pets

A dog can set off an open snap. The bar does not know a paw from a rat. Black Cat’s bullets say the trap is not for children, that you store it unarmed, and that you keep it away from pets and children when it is set. Roshield’s RRT4 has the same open bar, and those reviews talk about fingers on the spring. If a hand can fire the trigger by accident, a dog can do it because the bait smells of peanut butter. Sheffield allows break-backs outside only when non-target animals cannot reach them. If you cannot block the approach, you do not arm the bar.

What a cover changes

A cover puts plastic between the spring and the paw. It does not make the trap safe, and no listing here has a pet trial. SOLOKIT is two UK-made boxes at £15.66, 3.9 from 1,741. A cable tie sets the snap without opening the lid. Leave the lid off and the bar is open again. The listing still says children and small animals are kept away. Rat Reaper is the tunnel people buy because the title says dog and pet safe, at £12.99, 3.9 from 2,536. The first 50 UK reviews still mention dogs, broken covers, and rats held alive. Do not buy it because the title settled the dog question. Absence of a bad review on an electric unit is not a pet test.

Sheds and garages

A shed changes the job because of weather, food, and other animals. Rats follow the wall to the seed or the dog biscuits. Preston City Council says not to store pet food loose in sheds, and that a rat can use a gap of about 15 mm. Close the feed in a bin, then put the trap on that run, at the wall. Tether it. Havant’s advice is wire, so the trap is not dragged away. A Cleaneaty review describes a fox taking a trap outdoors. The RRT4’s outdoor question is unanswered, so a closed garage is a fairer reading than a flower bed. Rain washes peanut butter off. Look daily, with gloves, and double-bag a body. The Health and Safety Executive notes around 50 leptospirosis cases a year in the UK, some acquired abroad. If the dog sleeps in the shed, the box goes where the dog cannot nose, or it does not go down.

A live catch in the same space

A cage feels kinder because there is no bar. Anyhall’s two iron cages are £25.49, 31.5 cm by 14.5 cm by 11.5 cm, 4.4 from 541. There is no handle, so you carry a live animal against the mesh. The bullets say large squirrels can chew the wire. The animal is still yours after the door shuts. The Animal Welfare Act 2006 covers unnecessary suffering of an animal under your control. Twice-daily checks are a rule of thumb. Drowning is not an acceptable way to finish the job. This page does not teach a dispatch. Grey squirrel release is restricted by the 2019 order. These sources do not name an offence for releasing a brown rat. Stop when the garage is shared or handles food. Off agricultural land you tell the council in writing under the 1949 Act. A bite, or a flu-like illness after contact with rats or urine, needs a doctor. Updated 19 October 2026. Not a claim that any trap is pet-proof.

Common questions

Can a dog set off an open snap?
Yes. The bait is interesting and the bar does not distinguish a paw. Black Cat tells you to keep the armed trap away from pets and children. Roshield and GERAWOO reviews include fingers caught on the spring, which is the same mechanism a dog meets with its nose. If the dog uses the room, do not arm an open bar there.
What does Rat Reaper’s pet-safe title rest on?
On the dual-entry cover, in the title and the bullets, at £12.99. It does not rest on a pet trial in this file. The rating is 3.9 from 2,536, and the first 50 UK reviews include failed plastic and incomplete kills. The listing also says the trap is not for squirrels. Treat the title as a description of the shell, not as a promise about your dog.
Can the trap stay outside in the open?
Only if non-target animals cannot reach it, which is the Sheffield condition, and only if the listing actually claims outdoor use. Several outdoor questions in this set are unanswered. A fox took a Cleaneaty trap in one review. Rain spoils bait. A closed garage is a clearer case than a border in the garden.
What about a live cage if you have pets?
The cage has no strike bar, and you still have a live animal in a mesh box with no handle. Anyhall is 4.4 from 541 ratings at £25.49 for two. Check often. Squirrels chew wire and are a release problem if they are grey squirrels. A cage in the dog’s room is still something the dog will try to reach.
When do you stop and call someone?
When rats keep coming after you have proofed the gaps, when numbers are substantial enough that the 1949 Act’s written notice applies, or when the building is shared or handles food. Call a doctor after a bite or a flu-like illness following contact with rats or urine. Do not add a fourth open snap to a floor the dog already uses.
