Electric rat trap buying guide: size, power and place

Updated: 17 October 2026

An electric rat trap buying guide should begin with the animal and the place, not the largest voltage printed on a box. A trap for a brown rat needs a genuinely rat-sized chamber, while a unit near a damp garage door needs clearer weather protection than one kept in a dry loft. Power also matters on the first night: batteries may be absent, and some USB leads run a trap only while connected. You can compare the captured amazon.co.uk listings on our [electric rat trap comparison](/hub/traps/electric-rat-trap). Start with the animal and the hole it uses

First confirm whether the signs point to rats or mice. An adult brown rat needs more room than a mouse to reach the plates. A trade catalogue puts an electronic rat trap at roughly 210–215 mm long, and its mouse unit is substantially smaller. That comparison is not a legal minimum, and a title that says “rat” is not a measurement. The OWLTRA OW-1 measures 23.9 × 7.6 × 9.9 cm. The Vistroll MK22-ZZ01 colours are listed at 12 × 5 × 3 cm and their bullets refer to small mice. If no chamber size is supplied, do not invent one from the photograph. Printed figures such as 1,800 V or 9,000 V are seller claims, not measured results. If the animal is unidentified, or activity is beneath floors, in drains or a cavity, start with a council pest service or a competent controller. After the size check, see our best electric rat trap UK guide.

Choose power you will actually have on day one

A rat-sized box is unusable if its cells are not in the parcel. The OWLTRA OW-1 takes four C batteries and the OW-7 takes four D batteries. Neither listing states that those cells are supplied. Several cheaper models take four AA batteries, again commonly excluded, so add the cells to the real cost. On the OW-7, the 5 V, 1 A lead must stay connected and does not recharge an internal battery. VeftBltrem states USB at 5 V/2 A but excludes the adapter. Roshield describes a full charge and includes a cable, yet its structured listing also says AC. Buy only if that conflict is resolved. LSJXHAIK says a UK adapter is included. Mains equipment for a UK socket must meet the applicable plug requirements, including the BS 1363 point in the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016. Do not use a travel adapter in a damp place. The weather boundary is in our indoor or outdoor electric rat trap guide.

Read alerts, disposal and reviews together

A catch light or buzzer helps only if you can see or hear it. The OWLTRA OW-7 has light and sound, Roshield adds a blue light on an extension cable, and VeftBltrem uses different patterns for a catch and a low battery. A loud buzzer near a bedroom can be a drawback. Look for a lid, removable base or door so you can empty the trap without touching the animal or the plates. OWLTRA says the OW-1 switches off when its magnetic top is removed. Vistroll lists a removable base, and LSJXHAIK describes a release into a bin. Disconnect power as instructed before emptying. An indicator does not prove the plates are safe. Both OWLTRA ASINs display 4.0 from 14,738 reviews and the same review text, so do not add those totals. The Vistroll colours share a 4.6 from 25 reviews. Roshield’s separate 262-review base averages 3.4 and includes no-catch and charging complaints. RatKil has 69 reviews at 3.3.

A short checklist before you order

Confirm the species, then reject a small-mouse chamber for a rat problem. Record the chamber and entrance dimensions, and do not infer them from a photograph. Match the stated room rating to the floor and the weather. “Garden” text is not an IP rating. Price the complete power setup, including excluded batteries or a missing USB adapter, then check whether the reviews belong to that model. A rat-sized battery chamber can suit a dry indoor run. An IPX4 claim with its required cover can justify extra cost where splashes are real. In both cases, inspect the trap at least every 12 hours, keep children and pets away, and stop if the animal is still alive.

Common questions

How big should an electric rat trap be?
There is no single legal minimum quoted here. As a practical comparison, a trade catalogue shows an electronic rat trap around 210–215 mm long, while mouse units are much smaller. Check the entrance and internal chamber, not only the packaging, and reject listings whose own bullets say small mice when your evidence points to rats.
Is a mouse zapper the same tool?
No. The operating principle may be similar, but the entrance, tunnel and plate spacing can differ substantially. A 12 × 5 × 3 cm listing aimed at small mice should not be treated as equivalent to a chamber around 21–24 cm long that is presented for rats.
Are batteries better than USB?
Neither is automatically better. Batteries avoid a trailing lead and suit lofts or cupboards, but they may be excluded and need replacement. USB can provide steady power, although some traps must remain plugged in and include only a cable, not an adapter. Choose according to the room and the complete supplied equipment.
Does a higher printed voltage mean a better trap?
Not by itself. The voltage values in these listings are manufacturer claims, not measurements made for this comparison. Correct species fit, plate contact, power reliability and the outcome for the animal matter more than ranking products by the largest printed number.
Can an indoor trap go in a shed?
Only if the shed location remains genuinely dry and the manufacturer permits that use. A damp floor, wind-driven rain or condensation can make an indoor-only electrical trap unsuitable. A product mentioning a garden without an IP code has not provided a clear weather-resistance rating.
Is a high star rating enough?
No. Check how many ratings support it and whether the reviews belong specifically to that model. Two five-star ratings provide little evidence, and shared parent review blocks can appear against multiple ASINs. Written themes about catches, charging and chamber entry are more useful than the average alone.
Does humane mean officially approved?
No. A marketing description does not certify a voltage, a kill time or approval under the spring-trap rules. The trap must be suitable for the species, placed to avoid non-target animals and checked regularly. If an animal remains alive, contact someone competent to deal with it humanely.
