Wasp trap buying guide: when the bait pot is enough

Updated: 17 October 2026

Wasps at a patio lunch, around the bin, or on the plums are foraging. A nest in the loft, a soffit, or a cavity you use is a different job. This wasp trap buying guide is that split, before any model table. On 16 October 2026 the ten reusable pots on the [wasp trap comparison](/hub/traps/wasp-trap) ran from £5.89 to £12.99 on amazon.co.uk, and none included a bottle of lure. A pot is a side measure for insects already out looking for food. It does not treat a colony. Products Compared checked those listings and public UK guidance. We did not run a lab test. A wasp trap catches foragers, not a nest

A bait pot is a chamber you fill, hang or stand, and leave for wasps that are hunting protein or sugar. There is no spray in these boxes, and the liquid never reaches a nest you cannot see. The British Pest Control Association says DIY products are a poor match for a large nest, and that professionals use products the public cannot buy. A title that says nest killer is seller language. UK reviews in this set describe insects in the pot, not a colony that has gone. Historic England records no legal ban on controlling hornets and wasps. That is not permission to block an entrance, knock a nest down, or follow a removal video. Nests are not reused next year. A low-traffic nest, off doors and play, can be left until the colony dies back. Once people are regularly in the flight path, the pot is the wrong tool. If you already know you want a chamber, the best wasp trap page matches listings to jobs.

What the Royal Horticultural Society and pest controllers say

The Royal Horticultural Society describes a jam jar and the shop traps people hang near fruit, and it says the local effect is uncertain. A pot may catch wasps. The smell may also pull more of them toward the spot where you hung it. A pot on the table, in a doorway, or on the flowers you want to sit beside moves the problem onto you. The British Pest Control Association treats traps as a way to watch pressure, not as a cure. Early in spring the suggested lure is protein, such as meat or fish. From mid-summer the wasps want sugar. How full to fill, and how to empty a live pot, sit on the how to use a wasp trap page. Health and Safety Executive guidance on monitoring traps draws a line you will see in these titles. A trap that counts insects is monitoring. Words such as reduce, kill, control, or eliminate are biocidal claims. This page does not decide whether any ASIN here is authorised. Do not pour a household insecticide into a bait pot. Only an HSE-approved insecticide, used as its label says, belongs in that class of product.

Honey-pot bottle or funnel jar

This set has two shapes, and the trade-off is cleaning and whether insects stay in. Honey-pot bottles are the CKB pieces: clear plastic pots about 13 cm wide and 16 cm tall, in a 2-pack and a 4-pack, plus one glass bottle about 18.5 cm tall with a metal hanger and a cork. Funnel jars include the Aspectek ABS 2-pack, plus WenYa, Trendecor, V·Colokishi, and XIAOjnHONG. The XIAOjnHONG file says both glass and plastic, and both 90 g and 450 g, so you cannot shop that 6-pack on material. Reviewers of the glass CKB bottle, £12.99 and 4.3 from 493 ratings, like the look and also call it awkward once it is full. The plastic 4-pack, £11.99 and 2.4 from 55 ratings, is the weak star line, with leaks at the seam. Aspectek, £11.19 and 4.2 from 11,088 ratings, is the heavy evidence line, and UK reviewers still say newer lids let wasps out through a larger hole. Ram, £5.99 for four, mixes a wasp title with fruit-fly bullets. DXPETA, £5.89, claims a trap and a fake nest together, which is covered on the wasp trap versus decoy page.

What to check before you add it to the basket

You will mix the liquid yourself. Jam, sugar, fruit, vinegar, or an early-season scrap of meat is your job, not the parcel’s. UK reviews on several pots describe wasps leaving when the liquid is shallow, or when the fill reaches the holes. In this snapshot the lower shelf is £5.89 to £7.99: DXPETA, Ram, and the V·Colokishi 2-pack at £7.99 with 3.7 from 89 ratings. The middle runs from £10.99 to £11.99, including Trendecor at 4.0 from 17 ratings, Aspectek, XIAOjnHONG at £11.59, and WenYa at £11.99 with 4.0 from 10 ratings. The top of the set is £12.99 for one glass trap. The glass piece is the dearest per trap. The plastic 4-pack is cheaper per piece and has the weakest stars. A 5.0 from three ratings is not the same evidence as 4.2 from 11,088. If the title says bee catcher, or you keep honeybees nearby, vinegar on a listing is a suggestion, not a finding that pollinators are spared.

When to stop shopping and call someone

Call a qualified controller when the flight line goes into a loft, a soffit, or a cavity people use, when you would need a ladder, or when anyone nearby has had a serious reaction to a sting. The British Pest Control Association’s rule is to treat a nest when it risks people. A pot on the patio does not change that rule. A low-risk nest you can leave is one that is not on a route people use. You are not required to buy a trap, and you are not required to destroy the colony.

Common questions

Do wasp traps reduce the number of wasps, or do they draw more in?
The Royal Horticultural Society says it is not clear. A baited pot can catch foraging wasps, and the smell can also draw more insects toward the place you hung it. That is why the pot should sit away from the table, the doorway, and the flowers, even when a listing claims a strong catch. A trap is a local side measure. It is not a count of how many wasps remain in the garden.
Will a pot get rid of a nest in the loft or soffit?
No. These products are reusable bait chambers. They meet wasps that are already out foraging. They do not reach a nest in a loft, a soffit, or a cavity, and a nest-killer line on a title is not a treatment. The British Pest Control Association says DIY products are a poor match for a large nest. If people are in the flight path, that is a job for a qualified controller.
When should I call a pest controller instead of buying a trap?
Call when the flight line goes into a loft, soffit, or used cavity, when you would need a ladder to reach the entrance, or when someone nearby has had a serious sting reaction. A patio, a bin, or fruit on a bush can still be a pot job if you keep the smell off where you sit. Leaving a low-traffic nest until the colony dies back is also a valid choice, because nests are not reused the following year.
What is the difference between a honey-pot bottle and a funnel jar?
A honey-pot bottle in this set is the CKB shape: a clear jar, plastic or glass, that you hang or stand. A funnel jar uses side or trumpet openings, as on the Aspectek, WenYa, Trendecor, and V·Colokishi listings. The glass CKB is praised for looks and called awkward to clean once full. The plastic CKB 4-pack has a leak theme in UK reviews. Neither shape includes bait, and neither is a nest treatment.
Why do none of these listings include bait?
On the 16 October 2026 snapshot, every listing in this comparison left the lure out of the box. Aspectek prints an apple-cider-vinegar recipe. Others suggest sugar, jam, water, or vinegar. Early in spring, the British Pest Control Association points to protein such as meat or fish. From mid-summer the mix is sugary. You buy the chamber. You still mix a liquid that matches the month.
What does a one-way or nest-killer line actually mean?
It is a seller sentence. One-way means the listing claims insects can enter and not leave. UK reviews on several pots here describe wasps flying or walking back out, especially when the bait is shallow or a lid hole is large. Nest killer does not mean the pot treats a nest. Reviews describe catches in the chamber. They do not describe a colony removed from a building.
What if someone in the house has had a serious sting reaction?
Treat a nest by the house as a professional visit, and do not use a bait pot as the control. If a sting causes breathing difficulty, a swollen face or throat, or fainting, call 999. Use an adrenaline auto-injector if the person has one, and a second dose after five minutes if they still need it. Ordinary stings, the NHS says, usually settle in days after washing, a cold compress, and pain relief.
