A marten live trap on amazon.co.uk is a wire cage with a treadle and one or two doors, sold for martens alongside rats, rabbits, cats and foxes. The marten in the United Kingdom is the pine marten, which is fully protected. A product title that says marten is not a licence. Length, doors and those limits are in the [marten live trap buying guide](/hub/traps/marten-live-trap/sub/marten-live-trap-buying-guide). If the animal might be a pine marten, do not set one of these cages.

The best marten live traps in detail

Tcowoy 32 inch folding cage

Rank 1

Tcowoy 32 inch folding cage

∼£56

Our view

The Tcowoy 32 inch cage is listed at 78 x 29 x 30 cm, weighs 4.1 kg and folds for storage. Its target list covers cats up to 15 lb, raccoons, squirrels and rabbits, but does not mention martens. The only available UK review line calls it robust and good quality, offering no criticism or detail about the trigger. A 5.0-star score from just two ratings is too small a sample to establish reliability. At £55.99, it costs more than several better-evidenced cages here, so it suits shoppers who specifically value the folding format rather than those seeking a proven marten cage.

Pros

  • Folding design
  • Handle guard claimed
  • One UK review describes it as robust

Cons

  • Only two ratings and one short UK review line
  • Marten is not named and trigger details are unavailable

Best for: A lawful cat-, rabbit- or squirrel-sized target where folding storage is a priority.

Less suitable: Evidence-led buyers or anyone intending to capture a protected pine marten.

No. The bullets do not say marten.

What do the reviews say?

The listing line is 5.0 from 2. The available text is one short UK line: excellent quality, robust. It has no criticism.

VOUNOT 80 cm cage, green

Rank 2

VOUNOT 80 cm cage, green

∼£36

Our view

The VOUNOT 80 cm cage is the lowest-priced listing here that explicitly names martens, at £35.99. Its title gives dimensions of 80 x 26 x 34 cm, while the details repeat the same figures in a different order. The listing claims a sensitive pressure plate, a handle and tool-free assembly. Its 4.5-star score comes from 44 ratings, but the available review bodies are not labelled as UK reviews and are shared with the 100 cm version. This makes it the best-value data pick for a lower-cost, marten-named cage, not evidence that it is suitable or licensed for trapping a protected pine marten.

Pros

  • Lowest listed price among the marten-named cages
  • 80 cm length stated in the title
  • Pressure plate, handle and tool-free assembly claimed

Cons

  • No UK-labelled review body in the available evidence
  • Review text is shared with the 100 cm version

Best for: Comparing a lower-cost 80 cm cage for a lawful target that matches the listing.

Less suitable: Anyone seeking a licensed pine-marten trap or product-specific UK review evidence.

Common questions

Does the listing name martens?

Yes. The title and the bullets name rats, rabbits, martens and foxes.

Which size should you trust?

The title says 80 x 26 x 34 cm. The details table says 26 x 34 x 80 cm. The three numbers match with the axes swapped.

Are the reviews from the UK?

The listing line is 4.5 from 44. None of the available review bodies is labelled United Kingdom, and the same text appears on the 100 cm VOUNOT listing.

VOUNOT 100 cm cage, green

Rank 3

VOUNOT 100 cm cage, green

∼£41

Our view

The VOUNOT 100 cm cage offers a longer 100 x 29 x 40 cm format for £40.99 and explicitly names martens in the listing. At 6.06 kg, it is heavier than the 80 cm sibling and may suit shoppers who prioritise internal length over compact storage. The listing claims a sensitive pressure plate, a handle and assembly without tools. Its 4.5-star line is based on 44 ratings, but the available review text matches the 80 cm file and is not labelled as UK feedback. It therefore provides limited product-specific evidence, and it is not one of the named traps approved for licensed pine-marten capture.

Pros

  • 100 cm length stated in the title
  • Marten is named in the listing
  • Pressure plate, handle and tool-free assembly claimed

Cons

  • Available reviews are shared with the 80 cm version
  • No UK-labelled review body in the source data

Best for: A lawful target where a longer marten-named cage is preferred to the 80 cm VOUNOT.

Less suitable: Buyers relying on model-specific UK reviews or seeking an approved pine-marten trap.

Common questions

How is this different from the 80 cm VOUNOT?

The title length is 100 x 29 x 40 cm and the listed weight is 6.06 kg, against 80 x 26 x 34 cm and 4.7 kg. The price is £40.99.

Can the listing answer the squirrel question?

The page asks 'Can it catch squirrels?' The bullets name rats, rabbits, martens and other pests. They do not add a separate squirrel line.

Do the stars describe this cage on its own?

The line is 4.5 from 44. The review bodies match the 80 cm file and none is labelled United Kingdom.

SARSTRY 79 cm folding cage

Rank 4

SARSTRY 79 cm folding cage

∼£45

Our view

The SARSTRY is a 79 x 28 x 33 cm folding cage with a listed capacity of up to 8 kg and a £44.99 price. Three UK reviews provide more directly relevant evidence than most rows: reviewers mention quick unfolding, carry handles and enough room for a large cat or fox. One UK reviewer reports catching a cat overnight, while a non-UK review says the plate was too stiff for a cat. The listing does not name martens, so the 4.4-star score from 11 ratings should not be read as marten-specific performance. It is the top pick in this comparison on the stated review-evidence rule, but not a licensed pine-marten trap.

Pros

  • Three UK review bodies in the available evidence
  • Folds for transport or storage
  • Release door and carry handles mentioned by UK reviewers

Cons

  • Marten is not named in the listing
  • A review reports that the trip plate was too stiff for a cat

Best for: Shoppers prioritising UK review evidence and a folding cage for a lawful cat-sized target.

Less suitable: Anyone who needs a marten-specific claim or an approved trap for a protected pine marten.

Common questions

Is a marten named?

No. The title lists stray cats, raccoons, squirrels, rabbits, opossums, groundhogs and armadillos, and a limit of 8 kg.

What did UK reviews say about size?

One UK review calls it big enough for a large cat or a fox, 31 inches long. Another says it caught a cat overnight.

Does the treadle suit a light animal?

A German review says a cat walked in and out because the plate was too stiff, and that it may suit heavier animals only.

Tcowoy 57 inch large cage

Rank 5

Tcowoy 57 inch large cage

∼£181

Our view

The Tcowoy 57 inch model is a very large 145 cm cage weighing 17.2 kg and costing £180.99. Its listing targets large dogs, foxes, coyotes and bobcats up to 50 lb, not martens. The maker claims a folding frame, guarded handle and adjustable trigger sensitivity, but the source has no written review body to test those claims. The 4.0-star line represents a single rating, and the title's 21 inch height does not match the listed 66 cm detail. This is an oversized specialist row rather than a sensible marten comparison pick, especially when smaller cages cost far less.

Pros

  • Very large 145 cm listed length
  • Folding frame and handle guard claimed
  • Adjustable trigger sensitivity claimed

Cons

  • Only one rating and no written review body
  • Very high price, heavy weight and conflicting height figures

Best for: Comparing a very large cage for a lawful target explicitly covered by the listing.

Less suitable: Marten-sized work, easy carrying, budget buying or protected-species capture.

Common questions

What animals does the listing name?

Large dogs, foxes, coyotes and bobcats weighing up to 50 pounds. Marten is not named.

Do the title inches match the details?

The title says 57 x 19 x 21 inches. The details say 145 x 48 x 66 cm. A 21 inch height is not 66 cm. Weight is 17.2 kg.

Is there a written review?

The listing line is 4.0 from 1. There is no written review.

Kerbl 299676 two-entry cage

Rank 6

Kerbl 299676 two-entry cage

∼£66

Our view

The Kerbl 299676 combines a 100 x 28 x 28 cm cage with two entries, a pedal and a fold-down handle. Its bullets name martens and rabbits, although the details target line says rabbit and the brand field unexpectedly says cit. Reviews describe sharp door edges, an external setting arm that may close a door while the animal remains outside and one unit arriving without a screw. Those review bodies are not labelled as UK feedback, while the overall listing shows 3.9 stars from 40 ratings. At £66.30, it is a relatively expensive marten-named option whose two-entry layout should be weighed against the reported door concerns.

Pros

  • 100 cm cage with two entries
  • Marten is named in the listing bullets
  • Fold-down handle and collapsible design

Cons

  • Reviews report sharp edges and door-setting problems
  • No UK-labelled review body and inconsistent listing fields

Best for: Comparing a long, two-entry collapsible cage for a lawful target.

Less suitable: Buyers who need reassuring UK door-safety evidence or an approved pine-marten trap.

Common questions

Which animals does the listing name?

The bullets say martens, rabbits or similar. The details target line says rabbit.

Why are there two brand names?

The title is Kerbl 299676. The details brand field says cit.

What do reviews say about the doors?

Reviews, mostly from Germany and Spain, describe sharp door edges, a set arm that can close the door while the animal is still outside, and one unit missing a screw. No UK review paragraph is in the file.

Windhager 05378 wire box

Rank 7

Windhager 05378 wire box

∼£46

Our view

The Windhager 05378 is a compact 61 cm wire box sold assembled and explicitly described for martens and smaller rodents. Its £46.01 price sits above both VOUNOT cages despite the shorter stated length. The available reviews report empty trips, bait being taken without a catch and, in one case, a missing hook or an incompletely closed floor. None of those review bodies is labelled as UK feedback, and the details table's 200 g weight deserves caution rather than acceptance as a measured figure. This row is worth comparing when compact size matters, but its mixed 3.9-star record and trigger complaints weaken the case.

Pros

  • Marten is explicitly named in the listing
  • Supplied fully assembled according to the bullets
  • Compact 61 cm format

Cons

  • Reviews report empty trips and bait taken without a catch
  • No UK-labelled review body and a questionable listed weight

Best for: Comparing a compact, ready-assembled wire box for a lawful smaller target.

Less suitable: Buyers needing strong UK evidence, dependable trigger feedback or a licensed pine-marten trap.

Reviews from Belgium, France and Germany describe empty trips, bait taken without a catch, a missing hook, and a floor that is not closed. None is labelled United Kingdom.

Thealyn double-door cage, 105 cm

Rank 8

Thealyn double-door cage, 105 cm

∼£58

Our view

The Thealyn is a 105 cm, 6.66 kg folding cage with two doors and the largest UK-labelled review base in this comparison. Reviewers describe catches involving cats and foxes, but they also report doors jamming on uneven ground, wind causing false trips and door components coming apart. The title and details swap the stated width and height, although both retain the same 105 cm length. Its 3.6-star score from 382 reviews gives a broader but distinctly mixed picture. At £57.99, this is the row to examine for double-door behaviour, not a marten-specific recommendation because the listing does not name martens.

Pros

  • Two-door design
  • 382 UK-labelled reviews
  • Folds for transport or storage

Cons

  • Reviews report jams, wind trips and door failures
  • Marten is not named and the dimensions conflict

Best for: Comparing a long double-door cage for a lawful target on level, sheltered ground.

Less suitable: Exposed or uneven sites, or anyone seeking a marten-specific or approved trap.

Tcowoy 37 inch folding cage

Rank 9

Tcowoy 37 inch folding cage

∼£71

Our view

The Tcowoy 37 inch cage provides a listed 95 x 31 x 36 cm enclosure and weighs 7.42 kg. It folds and claims an adjustable trigger plus a guarded handle, features that may appeal when transporting a larger cage. However, its target list names cats, raccoons, armadillos and rabbits rather than martens. The source contains no star rating or written review evidence, so there is no customer record here for trigger sensitivity, durability or assembly. At £70.99, it asks a premium over several reviewed options, making it difficult to recommend unless its particular dimensions are essential for a lawful target.

Pros

  • 95 cm listed length
  • Folding design
  • Adjustable trigger sensitivity and handle guard claimed

Cons

  • No rating or written review evidence
  • Marten is not named and assembly information is unavailable

Best for: A lawful larger target where the listed 95 cm size and folding design are specifically required.

Less suitable: Review-led shoppers, budget buyers or anyone seeking a pine-marten trap.

Common questions

Does the listing name squirrels?

The page asks 'Can it catch squirrels?' The bullets name stray cats, raccoons, armadillos, rabbits and other small animals. They do not say squirrel or marten.

How we compared

Shelf prices, stars and review counts are the amazon.co.uk figures stored for these nine listings. They are not a live reload on 17 October 2026. The score on each card is on a 1–10 scale, mapped from the stored 0–100 figure for this set. That figure follows the star line and the review count, then keeps listing conflicts and review faults in view. It is not a laboratory test and not a licence. The top pick is the cage with at least 10 reviews and at least one United Kingdom review body: the SARSTRY, 4.4 from 11. The best value is the lowest price among cages whose listing names martens: the VOUNOT 80 cm at £35.99. Neither mark means the cage is licensed for a pine marten.

1

Lawful target

25%

If the animal might be a pine marten, stop. Schedule 5 protects it, and England adds a Natural England licence and an AIHTS trap. A title that says marten is not a licence. GOV.UK names Tomahawk 205 and 206NC, which are not these nine listings.

2

Length against the body

20%

Vincent Wildlife Trust gives females a body of about 46–54 cm and males about 51–54 cm, before the tail. Marten-named or cat-sized cages here are about 61–105 cm long. The 145 cm cage is listed for dogs, foxes and coyotes up to 50 lb.

3

Door and trigger

20%

Thealyn and Kerbl state two entrances. UK reviews of the Thealyn report wind trips and jams on uneven ground. A single spring door, as on the SARSTRY, is a different mechanism. A handle you can use without putting fingers through the wire matters once the door has shut.

4

Listing evidence

20%

United Kingdom review bodies count for more than a star line shared across two files. Thealyn is 3.6 from 382 with UK-labelled reviews. SARSTRY is 4.4 from 11 with three UK bodies. VOUNOT is 4.5 from 44 on both sizes, and those bodies are not labelled United Kingdom.

5

Spec conflicts and price

15%

Swapped axes, a 200 g listing on a 61 cm box, and a brand field that says cit stay visible. Price is the captured shelf figure, from about £35.99 to about £180.99. There is no certified pine-marten trap in these bands.

Marten live trap buying guide

Start with the species, then the length, then the door. A star rating does not answer those three. The nine listings below are amazon.co.uk pages, with the prices and review counts stored for this comparison, not a live reload on 17 October 2026. A cage that names martens can still be the wrong animal, the wrong length, or a listing whose reviews are not from the United Kingdom.

What is a marten live trap?

A marten live trap, as the phrase is used on amazon.co.uk, is a wire cage with a treadle and one or two doors. Listings sell it for martens alongside rats, rabbits, cats and foxes. In the United Kingdom the marten is the pine marten (Martes martes). It is fully protected. It is not the stone marten behind a German product name.

Best for

  • A lawful cat-sized target where UK review bodies matter more than the word marten
  • A lower-priced cage whose listing names martens, once the target is lawful

Not ideal for

  • Anyone who might be dealing with a pine marten, including a loft in the breeding season
  • A dog, fox or coyote job that only the 145 cm listing actually names

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Reading humane as a licence

Humane on a title does not authorise taking a pine marten, and it does not make any of these nine cages the Tomahawk 205 or 206NC named by GOV.UK.

  2. 2

    The wrong length

A 61 cm box and a 145 cm coyote cage are both poor matches for a cat-sized mustelid. Marten-named or cat-sized cages in this set are about 61–105 cm, and the 145 cm row names large dogs, foxes and coyotes up to 50 lb.

  3. 3

Treating 4.5 as a UK result

Both VOUNOT cages show 4.5 from 44. The review text matches across the two files and is not labelled United Kingdom. Thealyn's 3.6 from 382 is the large UK-labelled set, and it includes door failures.

What to weigh up

Law first, then length

High

If the animal might be a pine marten, stop. Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 protects it. England requires a Natural England licence and an AIHTS trap. GOV.UK names Tomahawk 205 and 206NC, and those models are not in this set. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each have their own licensing route. A dwelling-house point in Scotland covers disturbance and blocking access, not capture. For a lawful target, set the cage length against the body.

Doors, UK reviews, and the conflicts

High

Two entrances are stated on the Thealyn, about 105 cm, and the Kerbl, 100 cm. UK reviews of the Thealyn say wind can false-trip both doors and uneven ground can jam them. The SARSTRY is a single spring door at 79 cm, with three UK review bodies on a line of 4.4 from 11. VOUNOT's 4.5 from 44 is shared across the 80 cm and 100 cm files and is not labelled United Kingdom. Windhager is 3.9 from 39 with no UK label in the source, and reviews describe empty trips.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Noise in the roof

You can hear an animal above a ceiling and you want a cage this weekend. If it might be a pine marten, buy none of these nine. England needs a Natural England licence and a named AIHTS trap, and kits in lofts are a licensed exclusion question from March. The SARSTRY is the row to read only after the target is a lawful cat-sized animal.

A lawful cage you will compare

You already trap a species you are allowed to cage, and you are choosing among 79–105 cm cages. The SARSTRY is the top pick because three United Kingdom reviews describe the door, the handles and a cat-sized catch. It does not name martens, and it is not a pine-marten licence.

A German product name, a UK listing

You searched a German marten name and landed on a UK cage that uses the word. The VOUNOT 80 cm is the lowest price among cages that name martens, at about £35.99. Its 4.5 from 44 is not a United Kingdom review result, and the word on the title is still not a licence.

Common questions about marten live traps

Which marten live trap is the top pick in this set?
The top pick is the SARSTRY 79 cm folding cage, at about £44.99. The amazon.co.uk line is 4.4 from 11 reviews, and three review bodies are labelled United Kingdom. Reviewers mention quick unfolding, carry handles, and enough room for a large cat or a fox. One United Kingdom review reports a cat caught overnight. The listing does not name martens. It is not a licensed pine-marten trap. A separate review says the trip plate was too stiff for a cat.
Which cage is the best value?
The best value is the VOUNOT 80 cm cage, at about £35.99. That is the lowest shelf price in this set among cages that name martens. The title gives 80 x 26 x 34 cm, and the listing claims a sensitive pressure plate, a handle and assembly without tools. The star line is 4.5 from 44. Those review bodies are not labelled United Kingdom, and the same text appears on the 100 cm VOUNOT listing. Naming martens does not make it a licensed pine-marten trap.
Can you use one of these cages for a pine marten?
No. The pine marten is on Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. NatureScot states that it is an offence to intentionally or recklessly kill, injure or take one, or to damage or disturb a den. In England, GOV.UK requires an AIHTS trap and a Natural England licence, and it names Tomahawk 205 and 206NC. None of these nine listings is that named trap. Wales uses Natural Resources Wales. Northern Ireland uses DAERA and NIEA. A title that says marten is not a licence.
How long should a cage be for a marten-sized animal?
Vincent Wildlife Trust gives females a body of 46–54 cm and a tail of 18–24 cm, about 1.5 kg, and males a body of 51–54 cm and a tail of 26–27 cm, about 2 kg. Forestry England lists males at 1.5–2.2 kg and females at 0.9–1.5 kg. The marten-named or cat-sized cages here are about 61–105 cm long. The 145 cm Tcowoy is listed for large dogs, foxes and coyotes up to 50 lb. These figures describe the species, not a test of any cage in this set.
Does humane on the title make the trap lawful?
No. Humane on a title does not make taking a pine marten lawful, and it does not turn these cages into the Tomahawk models named by GOV.UK. For a lawful target, the door still has to shut on flat ground, the mesh should have no sharp edges, and the handle should keep your fingers off the wire. In England and Wales the Animal Welfare Act 2006 applies once an animal is under your control. Release of a protected species is a legal question, not a product feature.
Does the law require a daily check of these cages?
Section 11(3) of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 is a snare inspection rule. It does not set a daily check for these wire cages. A twice-daily check is only a rule of thumb, not that subsection. In England and Wales the Animal Welfare Act 2006 applies once an animal is under your control. If the animal might be a pine marten, do not set any of these cages while you decide how often to look. Call the relevant licensing body before any capture.
When should you call a licensing body instead of buying a cage?
Call NatureScot, Natural England, Natural Resources Wales, or DAERA and NIEA before any capture, and before you block a breeding den. The Vincent Wildlife Trust factsheet puts kits in lofts from March, with most births in early April, and treats breeding exclusion as licensed work. A mouse or rat cage is a different product on the live trap comparison. Roof noise on its own is not a reason to buy the 145 cm cage listed for coyotes.

Our verdict

The top pick is Thealyn double-door cage, 105 cm, with the highest score in this comparison (7.2 out of 10, from 382 amazon.co.uk reviews). The best value is the VOUNOT 80 cm cage, at about £35.99, the lowest price among cages that name martens, with the shared 4.5 from 44 kept as a non-UK review line. The Thealyn has the largest UK-labelled review base, 3.6 from 382, and those reviews include door jams and wind trips. None of the nine is the Tomahawk 205 or 206NC named by GOV.UK for a pine marten.
