MDF boards are pressed wood-fibre sheets with a smooth face and no grain. In the UK you buy them as a full trade board or as a small unfinished craft blank for models, painting and light panels. A cupboard, a long shelf or a bathroom carcass is a different purchase: a thicker sheet, and a moisture-resistant grade if the room is humid. You tell a useful listing from a muddled one by reading thickness, both dimensions and the material row together, because those lines often disagree. Standard board is for dry interiors. Moisture-resistant board, called MDF.H in EN 622-5 and often dyed green, is for humid rooms and is not waterproof. Trade practice uses about 3 mm for backing, 6 mm for a light panel, and 12 mm to 18 mm and above for cabinets and shelves. A3 paper is 297 × 420 mm, so the word A3 on a pack is not that size until the millimetres say so. Thickness, real size and grade are set out in the [MDF boards buying guide](/hub/diy-supplies/mdf-boards/sub/mdf-boards-buying-guide).

The best MDF boards in detail

DEAYOU 10-sheet small pack

Rank 1

DEAYOU 10-sheet small pack

∼£14

Our view

The DEAYOU pack is ten small sheets at £13.99, about 14 × 11 inch on the bullets, and it is not a confirmed MDF buy. The title says medium-density fibreboard and also chipboard, and the material row says poplar wood, so the board type is not settled from this listing. The amazon.co.uk line is 4.7 from 32, the highest stars here, and the score is held at 55 because almost all of the review text in the stored notes is from outside the United Kingdom: one UK review, one from Canada, and the rest from the United States. Thickness is printed three ways on the page, 1/4 inch, about 0.24 inch and 0.6 cm, and a US reviewer measured 0.23 inch. That mix is why a high star line does not lead this table. If you need MDF, choose a pack whose UK reviews and material row agree, and treat this one as an unidentified small blank.

Pros

  • Ten small sheets at £13.99
  • 4.7 from 32 on the amazon.co.uk star line
  • The dimensions line gives a centimetre size, 35.6 × 27.9 × 0.6 cm

Cons

  • Title says MDF and chipboard; the material row says poplar
  • Review text in the stored notes is mostly from outside the UK
  • Thickness appears as 0.24 inch, 0.25 inch and 0.6 cm
  • The listing does not confirm the sheet as MDF

Best for: You want a small craft blank and you do not need the material to be MDF.

Less suitable: You need a sheet you can treat as MDF, with UK reviews of that material.

Common questions

Is it MDF?

The title says medium-density fibreboard and also chipboard. The material row says poplar wood. The board type is not settled from this listing.

Where are the reviews from?

The star line is the amazon.co.uk figure, 4.7 from 32. Of the reviews in the stored notes, one is from the United Kingdom, one from Canada, and the rest from the United States.

How thick is a quarter of an inch here?

The title says 1/4 inch. A bullet says about 0.24 inch. The thickness row says 0.25 inch. The dimensions line says 0.6 cm. A US reviewer measured 0.23 inch.

SHUESS 20-sheet 2 mm pack

Rank 2

SHUESS 20-sheet 2 mm pack

∼£19

Our view

The SHUESS pack is twenty unfinished sheets listed at 42 × 30 cm × 2 mm for £18.99. The amazon.co.uk line is 4.5 from 14, but the stored notes contain one United Kingdom review, so the score is held at 60 rather than treating 4.5 as a deep sample. That review praises laser cutting, craft use and tight bubble wrap. The bullets say you can paint or stain the sheets, and no primer is in the box. The title also says hardboard while the bullets say MDF, and the material row only says Wood. The listing does not say moisture-resistant and does not mention a green core. Fourteen stars with one stored UK text is a thin record beside Wonninek’s 109 reviews. Use it as an unfinished 2 mm blank only if a hardboard word on the same title does not matter for your job.

Pros

  • Twenty stated 2 mm sheets at £18.99
  • 4.5 from 14 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • The one UK review in the stored notes cites laser cutting, craft use and tight wrap
  • Sold unfinished, so you choose the coating

Cons

  • Only one review text is in the stored notes
  • The title also says hardboard
  • No primer in the box, and no UK paint note
  • The listing does not describe a moisture-resistant grade

Best for: You want a stack of unfinished thin sheets and you can accept a single UK review text.

Less suitable: You need several UK reviews of the same job, or a title that does not also say hardboard.

Common questions

What do the reviews actually say?

The listing shows 4.5 from 14. The stored notes have one United Kingdom review. It praises laser cutting, craft use, and bubble wrap.

Is paint included?

No. The bullets say the sheets are unfinished so you can paint or stain them. No primer is listed.

Is it moisture-resistant?

The listing does not say moisture-resistant, and it does not mention a green core.

Kssvzz 3-sheet 2 mm pack

Rank 3

Kssvzz 3-sheet 2 mm pack

∼£10

Our view

The Kssvzz pack is three sheets listed at 42 × 30 cm × 2 mm for £9.99, the lowest price in this set. Across 138 amazon.co.uk reviews the line is 4.4, which is a large sample for a thin blank and the reason it carries the best value award, with the score held at 64. The material row says plywood while the title says MDF, and a United Kingdom reviewer who expected plywood wrote that the sheets were MDF as far as they could tell. That is a description, not a certificate. The same size is slightly wider than A3 paper, and one UK reviewer said the sheets do not fit an A3 frame. Another stuck a canvas on a sheet and it warped, and called 2 mm too thin for that job. There is no moisture grade and no emissions report. Buy it as a cheap thin art board only if you have read the plywood row and you do not need a frame that is truly A3.

Pros

  • £9.99 for three stated 2 mm sheets
  • 4.4 from 138 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • A UK reviewer described the sheets as MDF despite the plywood row
  • Light enough for pastel and watercolour in the UK notes

Cons

  • Material row says plywood while the title says MDF
  • One UK review: slightly wider than A3 and will not fit an A3 frame
  • One UK review: a 2 mm sheet warped as a canvas back
  • No grade and no emissions report

Best for: You want the cheapest thin blank in this set for light dry artwork and you will check the material row.

Less suitable: You need a sheet that fits an A3 frame, a canvas back, or a board sold with one material name.

Common questions

Why does the material row say plywood?

The listing sets Material Type to Plywood while the title says MDF. A United Kingdom reviewer who expected plywood wrote that the sheets were MDF as far as they could tell.

Will they fit an A3 frame?

One United Kingdom reviewer said they are slightly wider than A3 and do not fit an A3 frame. The bullet size is 42 × 30 cm. A3 paper is 297 × 420 mm.

Are they thick enough to back a canvas?

One United Kingdom reviewer stuck a canvas on and the 2 mm sheet warped. That review called them too thin for that job.

Wonninek 7-sheet 3 mm pack

Rank 4

Wonninek 7-sheet 3 mm pack

∼£15

Our view

The Wonninek pack is seven sheets listed at 30 × 40 cm and 3 mm, £14.96 on amazon.co.uk, and it is the clearest small dry blank in this set. Across 109 reviews the line is 4.4, and United Kingdom reviewers say the boards are MDF and match the listing, which is why the score is 76 and why this pack is the top pick here. One painter put on two coats of gesso and then used acrylics, and other UK notes cover a knife, glue, models and a small CNC. The material row only says Wood, and there is no grade and no E1 line, so this is a craft blank rather than a documented cabinet board. A reviewer found the dust very fine and said to wear a face mask; the listing has no safety data sheet. The bullet size and the dimensions line swap 30 cm and 40 cm, which is the same rectangle written two ways, rather than a second sheet size. It is still a 3 mm craft blank: an 18 mm cupboard side or a moisture-resistant grade is a different purchase.

Pros

  • Seven stated 3 mm sheets, 30 × 40 cm, at £14.96
  • 4.4 from 109 amazon.co.uk reviews, and UK reviewers call the sheets MDF
  • UK uses named in reviews include acrylics after gesso, models, glue and a small CNC
  • No second, conflicting sheet size in the size rows

Cons

  • No declared grade and no E1 line
  • Material row says Wood rather than MDF
  • Fine dust called out in a UK review, with no safety data sheet on the listing
  • 3 mm only, so it is a craft blank rather than a cabinet or shelf sheet

Best for: You want a small dry craft blank that UK reviewers describe as MDF, and you will prime it yourself.

Less suitable: You need an 18 mm carcass, a named moisture-resistant grade, or a declaration of performance.

Common questions

Do the UK reviews say these sheets are MDF?

Yes. United Kingdom reviews say the boards are MDF and match the listing. The material row only says Wood.

What did a painter do before acrylics?

One United Kingdom reviewer applied two coats of gesso, then painted in acrylics. Gesso is not in the box.

Is a mask mentioned?

One United Kingdom reviewer said the dust is very fine and to wear a face mask. The listing has no safety data sheet.

TSKDKIT stated A2 6 mm sheet

Rank 5

TSKDKIT stated A2 6 mm sheet

∼£17

Our view

The TSKDKIT listing is one sheet at £16.99, and the bullets say 59.4 × 42 cm × 6 mm, the largest blank in this set. Across 41 reviews the line is 4.3, and the score stays at 60 because the size rows disagree and two United Kingdom reviews report smashed corners. The bullets and a thickness row say 6 mm, while the dimensions line says 59.4 × 42 × 2.5 cm. UK buyers have used sheets for pastels, a guitar-body template, oil and acrylic after primer and gesso, and one printer shelf. None of those notes is a load rating, and the listed weight is 1.16 kg. One review mentions plenty of packing and still broken corners. The material row says Wood, with MDF in the bullets, and there is no moisture grade. It is a single larger panel only if you can afford to lose a corner and you confirm which thickness arrived.

Pros

  • Largest stated sheet in the set, 59.4 × 42 cm in the bullets
  • 4.3 from 41 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • UK uses include pastels, a guitar-body template, and paint after primer and gesso
  • £16.99 for one sheet rather than a stack of offcuts

Cons

  • 6 mm and 2.5 cm are both printed
  • Two UK reviews report badly damaged corners
  • No load rating behind the printer-shelf note
  • No moisture grade

Best for: You want one larger dry blank for a template or a painted panel and you will inspect the corners.

Less suitable: You need one thickness on the page, intact corners, or a sheet that carries a stated load.

Common questions

Is it 6 mm or 2.5 cm?

The bullets and the thickness row say 6 mm. The dimensions line says 59.4 × 42 × 2.5 cm. Both figures are on the stored page.

How did it arrive?

Two United Kingdom reviews say the corners were badly damaged. One of those mentions plenty of packing and still broken corners.

Reviews name pastels, a guitar-body template, oil and acrylic after primer and gesso, and one printer shelf. None of those is a load rating.

AHAQU 10-sheet 6 mm pack

Rank 6

AHAQU 10-sheet 6 mm pack

∼£24

Our view

The AHAQU pack is ten sheets at £23.99, the highest price here, with bullets that say 42 × 30 cm × 6 mm. Across 16 reviews the line is 4.3, and the score is 62 because a United Kingdom reviewer measured 5.85 mm and said that shortfall matters for laser finger joints. The bullet says the sheet meets E1, and the stored listing has no certificate number and no test report, so the claim stays unverified. Width is also split: the bullet says 42 × 30 cm, the dimensions line says 42 × 29.7 cm, and a size row says A3. The material row says engineered wood. Saws are claimed on the page, which is separate from a measured 6 mm. If your joint or jig needs a true 6 mm, this pack is the one to check with calipers before you cut a set.

Pros

  • Ten sheets with a stated 6 mm, the thicker craft blank in this set
  • 4.3 from 16 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • A UK reviewer measured thickness and reported the figure
  • Stated size is in the same band as other 42 × 30 cm packs

Cons

  • One UK review measured 5.85 mm against a 6 mm bullet
  • E1 is a bullet with no certificate
  • Bullet, dimensions line and an A3 row do not share one width
  • £23.99 is the top price here for a small blank, not a full sheet

Best for: You want a thicker small blank than 2 mm or 3 mm and you will measure it before a tight joint.

Less suitable: You need a certified E1 sheet, a true 6 mm for finger joints, or an 18 mm panel.

LDXDRU 24-sheet 2 mm pack

Rank 7

LDXDRU 24-sheet 2 mm pack

∼£20

Our view

The LDXDRU pack is twenty-four sheets at £19.99, with bullets that say 42 × 30 cm × 2 mm. Across 16 reviews the line is 4.2, and the score stays at 58 because the page and the arrival notes do not agree with a simple bulk buy. A dimensions line says 10 × 10 cm, while a United Kingdom buyer who wanted 43 cm received 42 × 30 cm. One UK review says the sheets cut nicely on a laser, and another says they would not cut after many passes, so the title is not a trial of your machine. Corners arrived damaged in one review, and another sheet was split at the edge. A reviewer found the face smooth and suggested a sealer before paint, which is not in the box. The material row says engineered wood, with no grade. Twenty-four thin blanks are useful only if you measure one sheet before you plan a bed size.

Pros

  • Twenty-four stated 2 mm sheets at £19.99
  • 4.2 from 16 amazon.co.uk reviews
  • One UK review reports a clean laser cut
  • A UK note calls the face smooth

Cons

  • Dimensions line says 10 × 10 cm against 42 × 30 cm in the bullets
  • Another UK review: the sheets would not cut on that laser
  • Damaged corners in one review, and one sheet split at the edge
  • No moisture grade

Best for: You want a large count of thin blanks and you will measure a sheet before you commit a laser file.

Less suitable: You need one agreed size on the page, intact corners, or a laser result you can treat as guaranteed.

NAMYEUT 15-sheet 3 mm pack

Rank 8

NAMYEUT 15-sheet 3 mm pack

∼£15

Our view

The NAMYEUT pack is fifteen sheets listed at 40 × 30 cm × 3 mm for £14.99. The amazon.co.uk line is 3.0 from two reviews, and the score is 40 because that sample is too small to carry a product and one of the two reviews says the sheets do not cut on that person’s laser. The other UK review says the boards will do the job and does not name a project. The highlight mentions laser engraving, which those two notes do not confirm. The material row says fibreboard, and the bullets say wood fibres and medium-density fibreboard. There is no paint note and no grade. Fifteen sheets look generous next to a seven-sheet pack, and the price is close to Wonninek’s £14.96 for fewer sheets with 109 reviews. Skip this pack if the cut has to work on a hobby laser the first time.

Pros

  • Fifteen stated 3 mm sheets, 40 × 30 cm, at £14.99
  • Material row says fibreboard
  • One of the two UK reviews says the boards will do the job

Cons

  • 3.0 from only two amazon.co.uk reviews
  • One of those reviews says the sheets do not cut on that laser
  • The laser highlight is not backed by the UK notes
  • No grade and no paint note

Best for: You want a 3 mm blank to try on a non-critical dry job and you can spare a sheet.

Less suitable: You need a laser cut that UK reviews support, or a rating based on more than two reviews.

CZMTBO 6-sheet 3 mm pack

Rank 9

CZMTBO 6-sheet 3 mm pack

∼£13

Our view

The CZMTBO pack is six sheets listed at 30 × 40 cm × 3 mm for £13.49, and the material row does say medium density fibreboard. The stored amazon.co.uk text has no customer-review line, so the rating is not stated and the score stays at 0. The brand row says CZMTBO and the manufacturer row says YCFCOK, model UKCC0095, which is two names for one pack. Listed weight is 281 g for six sheets. The page asks whether the board splinters when cut, and the bullets claim a burr-free face without reporting a test. There is no paint note, no cut note and no grade. A material row that names the board is useful, and it does not replace a review of a real job. Leave this pack until the live page shows a star line you can read.

Pros

  • Six stated 3 mm sheets, 30 × 40 cm, at £13.49
  • Material row names medium density fibreboard
  • Bullet size and the dimensions line describe the same 30 × 40 cm sheet

Cons

  • No amazon.co.uk star line in the stored notes
  • Brand CZMTBO and manufacturer YCFCOK on the same page
  • Listed weight is 281 g, with no review that weighs the pack
  • The splinter claim is a bullet, not a reported test

Best for: You only want a 3 mm blank whose material row names fibreboard, and you will wait for reviews.

Less suitable: You want a UK review of cutting or painting, or a pack with a visible star rating.

Common questions

Is there a star rating?

No. The stored amazon.co.uk text has no customer-review line, so the rating is not stated.

How we compared

Shelf prices, stars and review notes are the amazon.co.uk snapshot stored for these nine craft packs, dated 21 October 2026. The score starts from that star line, where a 5.0 would sit near 100, and is then held down for a thin or conflicting listing. This comparison did not lab-test strength, formaldehyde, moisture or a laser setting. A seller’s thickness, E1 line or laser claim stays a seller claim. None of these listings is an 18 mm trade sheet, and none states a moisture-resistant grade.

1

Star line

40%

The amazon.co.uk star line is the starting point. A 5.0 would sit near the top of a 0–100 score. Stars are a review average, separate from a bend test or an emissions test.

2

Listing agreement

30%

Marks come off when the material row disagrees with the title, the dimensions line disagrees with the bullets, or the page gives two thicknesses.

3

UK review evidence

20%

A very small review count, review text from outside the UK, a damaged arrival, or a measured thickness that misses the bullet holds the score down. Non-UK text is not British opinion.

4

Grade for the job

10%

No declared grade, an E1 line with no report, and a craft thickness that cannot be a cabinet sheet hold the score down. None of these packs states a moisture-resistant grade.

MDF boards buying guide

You are choosing a sheet for a dry craft job, or checking whether a thin pack can stand in for a cabinet. The nine amazon.co.uk listings here are unfinished craft packs, mostly 2 mm, 3 mm or 6 mm, from about £9.99 to about £23.99. None is an 18 mm trade sheet, and none states a moisture-resistant grade. The top pick is the Wonninek 7-sheet pack at about £14.96 when UK reviews need to call the sheet MDF and the job is a small dry blank.

What is an MDF board?

MDF boards are medium-density fibreboard: wood fibres pressed into a sheet with a smooth face and no grain. UK merchants sell full boards, often 2440 × 1220 mm, for cabinets, shelves and wall linings. amazon.co.uk also sells small unfinished craft packs, about 300 × 400 mm or 300 × 420 mm, mostly 2 mm, 3 mm or 6 mm. The nine listings in this table are that craft object. A carcass, a long shelf or a humid room is a different buy. Grades follow EN 622-5. Standard MDF is for dry interiors.

Best for

  • Dry-room craft, models and art on a small unfinished blank
  • A light panel where about 6 mm is enough and you will measure it

Not ideal for

  • A cupboard, a long shelf or a bathroom carcass
  • A job that needs a named moisture-resistant grade or a fire class

Mistakes to avoid

  1. 1

    Treating A3 as paper size

A3 paper is 297 × 420 mm. Packs sold as 42 × 30 cm are wider. A UK review of the Kssvzz sheets said they would not fit an A3 frame. Read both size lines, then measure if a frame is tight.

  2. 2

    Using 2 mm as structure

A 2 mm sheet is an art blank. One UK review said a Kssvzz sheet warped as a canvas back. Cabinets and shelves sit around 12–18 mm and up. None of these nine packs is that sheet.

  3. 3

Buying a laser title as a test

Laser notes in this set disagree. One LDXDRU review reports a clean cut and another says the sheets would not cut. One NAMYEUT review says that laser would not cut. The word on the title is a seller claim.

What to weigh up

Job and thickness

High

The first check is the job, because thickness follows it. Trade guidance uses about 3 mm for backing, 6 mm for a light panel, and 12–18 mm and above for cabinets and shelves. None of the nine packs in this table is an 18 mm sheet. A 2 mm blank is for light dry artwork. A UK review of the Kssvzz 2 mm sheets said one warped when it was used as a canvas back, and called them too thin for that job.

Size, material row and grade

High

Read the bullet size and the dimensions line as one check. A3 paper is 297 × 420 mm. Packs sold as 42 × 30 cm are wider, and a UK reviewer said the Kssvzz sheets would not fit an A3 frame. LDXDRU’s bullets say 42 × 30 cm × 2 mm and a dimensions line says 10 × 10 cm. AHAQU’s bullet says 42 × 30 cm, the dimensions line says 42 × 29.7 cm, and a size row says A3. TSKDKIT’s bullets say 59.4 × 42 cm, the largest blank here, while the dimensions line also prints 2.5 cm of thickness.

Which option suits you?

Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.

Dry craft and paint

You want a small dry blank for acrylics, models or a light CNC, and you will prime it yourself. The Wonninek 7-sheet pack is the top pick at about £14.96, stated 3 mm, with 4.4 from 109 reviews. UK reviewers say the sheets are MDF. There is no declared grade.

Thin art on a budget

You want the lowest price in this set for light dry artwork, and you will read the material row. The Kssvzz 3-sheet pack is best value at about £9.99, stated 2 mm, with 4.4 from 138 reviews. The row says plywood while the title says MDF. One UK review said a sheet warped as a canvas back.

A thicker small blank

You want something thicker than 2 mm or 3 mm for a small dry job, and you will measure before a tight joint. The AHAQU 10-sheet pack is about £23.99, with bullets that say 6 mm and 4.3 from 16 reviews. One UK review measured 5.85 mm. The E1 line has no certificate.

Common questions about MDF boards

Which MDF board is the top pick in this comparison?
The top pick is the Wonninek 7-sheet pack at about £14.96. It scores 76, the highest in this craft set, with 4.4 from 109 amazon.co.uk reviews, and UK reviewers say the sheets are MDF. It is a stated 3 mm blank with no declared grade and no E1 line. The score is an editorial reading of the star line and the listing. A cupboard or a bathroom needs a merchant sheet with a named grade.
How much do MDF boards cost on amazon.co.uk?
On the stored amazon.co.uk capture, these craft packs run from about £9.99 to about £23.99. Kssvzz is about £9.99 for three stated 2 mm sheets. Wonninek is about £14.96 for seven stated 3 mm sheets. AHAQU is about £23.99 for ten stated 6 mm sheets. Full 2440 × 1220 × 18 mm sheets are a different listing: on 21 October 2026, packs of five and ten were about £31.60 and £30.50 a sheet.
What should I check before I buy MDF boards?
Start with the job and the thickness. About 3 mm is backing, 6 mm a light panel, and 12–18 mm a cabinet or shelf. Then read both dimensions. A3 paper is 297 × 420 mm, so the word A3 is not that size. Check that the material row agrees with the title, because some pages say plywood, chipboard or poplar as well as MDF. None of these nine listings states a moisture-resistant grade.
Is moisture-resistant MDF waterproof?
Standard MDF is for dry interiors. Moisture-resistant board, MDF.H in EN 622-5, is for humid interiors and is often dyed green. It still needs a seal if water is only occasional, and it is not a board for standing water. A coat of paint leaves standard board absorbent. Load-bearing humid grade MDF.HLS is limited to short-term load. None of the nine craft listings here says MR. A bathroom carcass needs a merchant sheet with that grade named.
Does A3 on an MDF listing mean A3 paper?
A3 paper is 297 × 420 mm. Packs sold as 42 × 30 cm are wider than that sheet of paper. A UK reviewer said the Kssvzz sheets, listed at 42 × 30 cm, would not fit an A3 frame. AHAQU’s bullet says 42 × 30 cm, the dimensions line says 42 × 29.7 cm, and a size row says A3, so those three lines are not one width.
How do I cut MDF boards without filling the room with dust?
HSE treats MDF dust as wood dust under COSHH. The eight-hour limits are 3 mg/m³ for hardwood dust and 5 mg/m³ for softwood dust, and mixtures use 3 mg/m³. Use extraction, a class M vacuum rather than a broom or compressed air, and RPE at assigned protection factor 20. FFP3 is the example HSE gives for most machining. If cutting leaves you wheezy or with a rash, stop and get medical advice.
Is an E1 line on a craft pack a certificate?
FIRA describes E1 as up to 0.124 mg/m³. The EU article limit of 0.062 mg/m³ is not automatically Great Britain REACH. It matters in Northern Ireland and on the EU market. Only the AHAQU bullet claims E1, and the stored page has no certificate number and no test report, so the claim stays unverified. No other pack here carries an E1 line. EN 13986 sits on a declaration of performance, which none of these craft pages has.
When should I buy a trade sheet instead of a craft pack?
Buy a trade sheet when the job is a cupboard, a long shelf or a bathroom carcass. You want a named thickness, usually 12–18 mm and up, and a named grade. Moisture-resistant board for a humid room is MDF.H, rather than a 2 mm or 3 mm craft blank. If the job is rain off a shed roof rather than a panel, that is the gutter comparison, not an MDF pack.

Our verdict
