How to paint MDF

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have a bare sheet of MDF, a tin of paint, and a cut edge that looks thirsty before the brush even touches it. The face is smooth and dense. The edge is open fibre, so the same coat sits on one and sinks into the other. This page is the order that stops a furry edge: clean, seal the cut, sand the nibs, prime, then topcoat. It does not rank the packs on the [MDF boards comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/mdf-boards). Products Compared used UK decorator notes and amazon.co.uk reviews captured on 21 October 2026, not a coating trial. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

The edge drinks the paint

A factory face on MDF is pressed smooth. A sawn or knifed edge is a bundle of fibres with no skin, and the first watery coat raises those fibres into a fuzz. Decorators at Surrey Painters describe the edge as the thirsty part of the board. Cworkshop's priming guide, updated on 21 September 2026, starts there: if you paint the face first, you judge the job before the weak part has been sealed. A 30 × 40 cm sheet has a short perimeter, and every millimetre of a snapped edge is still open fibre. Seal that edge, let it dry, and only then decide whether the colour is right. Sanding the fuzz makes the dust treated as wood dust on how to cut MDF. Keep the extractor on. Do not sand a bare face hard just to key it.

A workable order

Clean off dust so the first coat is not glued to loose fibre. Seal the cut edges. Let that coat dry. Sand the raised nibs lightly. Prime the faces and the edges with a primer suited to the topcoat. Then apply the topcoat. Recoat times come from the tin in your hand, not from a universal clock. There is no fixed number of coats. Cworkshop's edge guide is seal, sand, and seal again where the edge is still fuzzy. Surrey Painters sand at about 240 grit between coats. Diluted PVA is an older edge trick with drawbacks, not the default beside a purpose-made sealer. MEDITE's note for its own Premier board is to sand profiled edges with 150–240 grit, then seal, prime and topcoat. That sequence is for MEDITE Premier, not a test of these packs.

What buyers of these packs did

None of the nine listings includes a primer. On Wonninek, one United Kingdom reviewer applied two coats of gesso and then painted in acrylics. On TSKDKIT, a reviewer used wood primer, sanded, added gesso, and then used oil and acrylic. On LDXDRU, a reviewer found the face smooth and suggested a sealer before paint. Gesso is an artist's ground. Two coats on a 3 mm craft sheet are not the prescription for every paint. Wonninek's paint-type row says water-based. Kssvzz's says acrylic. Those rows are how the page is filled in, not a coating test. DEAYOU's page does not settle the material as MDF, chipboard or poplar. Follow the tin you actually open.

Paint is not a grade change

A sound paint film slows moisture getting into the fibres. It does not turn standard MDF into moisture-resistant MDF, and it does not make a 2 mm blank suitable for a bathroom. Cworkshop's note on waterproofing makes the same limit: paint by itself is not a waterproofing system. The European Panel Federation wants a moisture-resisting finish on every face that meets water, and a moisture-resistant grade when wetting is frequent. A face-only coat leaves the cut edge as a wick. We do not claim that paint drops formaldehyde to a negligible level. That sentence is not in the HSE sources used here. If the room stays humid, choose the grade on moisture-resistant MDF before you choose a colour.

Common questions

Can I paint straight onto bare MDF?
You can put paint on the face, and the cut edge will still show it was bare. The pressed face is smooth. The edge is open fibre and raises a fuzz when a thin coat soaks in. Seal the edge, let it dry, sand the nibs, then prime and topcoat. None of the nine amazon.co.uk packs includes a primer. A UK reviewer on Wonninek used two coats of gesso before acrylics, which is a ground they chose, not a coating supplied in the box.
Why does the edge look furry?
The saw or knife opens the fibres, and the first coat swells them. Surrey Painters call the edge the thirsty part. Cworkshop's fix is to seal, sand lightly, and seal again where it is still rough. Sanding at about 240 grit between coats is their decorator practice. Do the sanding with extraction running, because MDF sanding is a high-dust task in HSE's WD7 sheet. A furry edge is a missed sealer, not a fault you can hide with a thicker colour coat alone.
Do I need a special primer?
You need a primer or sealer that suits the topcoat, and the recoat time printed on that tin. Zinsser B-I-N Aqua is quoted by Cworkshop at about 25 minutes touch-dry and 45 minutes to recoat, as that product's own times. Those numbers do not transfer to every acrylic. Diluted PVA is an older edge trick with drawbacks, not the default. MEDITE's 150–240 grit note applies to MEDITE Premier, not to these craft packs.
Is gesso the same as an MDF primer?
Gesso is an artist's ground, and it is what two UK reviews in this set actually used. Wonninek's reviewer put on two coats, then acrylics. TSKDKIT's reviewer used wood primer, sanded, then gesso, then oil and acrylic. That is evidence of a method on those sheets. It is not a certificate that gesso replaces a primer-sealer on a show edge or on a humid-room board. Read the gesso tin for its own drying time, and still seal a cut edge that stays fuzzy.
Will paint make the board waterproof?
A coat of paint is not a waterproofing system, and it does not change standard MDF into a moisture-resistant grade. Cworkshop says as much on its waterproofing note. Faces and edges both need a moisture-resisting finish if the board might meet water, which is the European Panel Federation's condition, and frequent wetting still points to a moisture-resistant board. For a shower, look at a purpose-made wet-area panel rather than another coat on a craft blank.
