Moisture resistant MDF

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are about to put MDF in a kitchen, a bathroom or a utility room, and the pack in the basket has no grade printed on it. Moisture resistant MDF is a humid-interior board. A green core is a dye so you can recognise the grade. This page says what the grade is, why you still seal it, and why none of the nine amazon.co.uk packs in the [MDF boards comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/mdf-boards) states it. Products Compared used public UK and European panel notes on 21 October 2026, not a soak test of these listings. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What the grade actually is

Standard MDF is for dry interiors. Moisture-resistant MDF is the humid-interior grade, MDF.H in EN 622-5. MEDITE's own MR board is sold as option 1 of that standard and as Use Class 2 under EN 335. Use Class 2, as APA Wood Europe explains it, means under cover, not in the rain, with occasional wetting such as condensation. It is not a licence to leave a panel on a patio. MEDITE's FAQ says the board is for kitchens and bathrooms, and that it should not be used outside. The same FAQ says the board is not waterproof. The European Panel Federation tells you to seal MDF.H where water is only intermittent, and recommends the moisture-resistant grade when wetting is frequent. It allows standard board only when every surface that might meet water has a moisture-resisting finish. An 18 mm standard panel and a 6 mm standard blank are the same grade problem in a steamy room. The millimetres are on the MDF board buying guide.

Green is a dye

Many moisture-resistant sheets are dyed green through the core so a cutter can see the grade on an offcut. MEDITE explains the green as identification on its own MR board. The dye is not the moisture resistance, and painting over it does not remove the need to seal the panel. A brown craft blank with no green core, and no MR line on the listing, has not become the grade because the title says MDF. MEDITE publishes a reaction-to-fire line for its own MR board at 9 mm and above. That line is not a rating for these craft packs. If a building job needs a class, ask for the declaration of performance on the sheet you are buying.

You still seal every face and edge

Moisture-resistant board still wants a finish. MEDITE's FAQ says to seal and coat it fully in a bathroom. The European Panel Federation keeps the same condition: the surfaces that meet water or high humidity need a moisture-resisting finish. Edges, housings and the backs of panels are part of that sentence. A face coat with a raw cut edge leaves a path into the core. MEDITE's MR datasheet talks about conditioning for two to three days. That instruction is for MEDITE MR, not for these nine packs. Coat order is on how to paint MDF.

These packs are not that grade

None of the nine listings says moisture-resistant, and none describes a green core. Wonninek, the top pick for a small dry blank, is stated at 3 mm. Kssvzz, the best value at £9.99, is stated at 2 mm and carries a plywood material row. AHAQU's bullet talks about E1, not about moisture. DEAYOU's title says MDF and chipboard and the material row says poplar. A bathroom buyer who sorts the comparison by stars is sorting the wrong shelf. Leave the craft table for this job. Buy a merchant sheet marked MDF.H, in the thickness the span needs. Ask for Use Class 2 if the room is humid and under cover. A shower zone with standing water is a different material. Specialist merchants contrast that job with a purpose-made wet-area panel such as compact laminate. We have not compared those products here.

Common questions

Is moisture-resistant MDF waterproof?
Moisture-resistant MDF is for humid interiors, not for standing water or rain. MEDITE's FAQ on its own MR board says it is not waterproof and should not be used outside, including a porch left open to weather. Use Class 2 is occasional wetting under cover, such as condensation. You still seal and coat a bathroom panel. A soak, a shower tray or an outdoor screen wants a different product from MDF.H.
What does the green core mean?
The green is a dye so you can see that the sheet is the moisture-resistant grade on a cut edge. MEDITE describes it that way on its own board. The dye is not a coating and it is not the proof of a test. A listing that never mentions green or MR has not shown you the grade. In this comparison, none of the nine packs describes a green core. Read the stamp or the product data on a merchant sheet before you treat colour as performance.
Can I paint ordinary MDF and put it in a bathroom?
The European Panel Federation allows standard MDF only where every surface that meets water or high humidity has a moisture-resisting finish, and it recommends a moisture-resistant grade when wetting is frequent. None of the nine craft packs states that grade, so painting a 2 mm or 3 mm blank is not a bathroom specification. Seal faces and edges if you use standard board in light humidity, and move to MDF.H when the room stays wet.
Do any boards in this comparison state MR?
No. The nine amazon.co.uk packs kept for the main table do not say moisture-resistant and do not show a green core. Their UK review notes cover craft, paint, lasers and damaged corners. DEAYOU is also unsettled as MDF, chipboard or poplar. A star rating is not a moisture test. For a humid room, buy a named MDF.H sheet from a merchant and keep these packs for dry blanks.
What is Use Class 2 in plain words?
Use Class 2 means the wood product is under cover and may see occasional wetting, such as condensation, not direct rain. APA Wood Europe sets it out that way from EN 335. It is not a number of years of life. MEDITE links its MR board to that class and still tells you to seal it in a bathroom and to keep it indoors. A sheet screwed under a leaking sill is outside the class even if the core is green.
What should I buy instead for a shower zone?
A shower with standing water is outside what MDF.H is for. Moisture-resistant MDF is a humid-interior sheet, and MEDITE says its MR board is not waterproof. Specialist merchants contrast that job with a purpose-made wet-area panel such as compact laminate. We have not tested compact-laminate boards in this folder, so ask the merchant for the product they specify for the wet zone. Do not step up from 3 mm craft MDF to 18 mm standard MDF and call the shower solved.
