How to cut MDF

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have a sheet of MDF on the bench, a pencil line, and a room that will fill with dust the moment a blade or a sander starts. The cut is the easy part to picture. The dust is the part the Health and Safety Executive treats as wood dust under COSHH, including MDF. This page matches the tool to the thickness and says how to catch that dust. Pack choice sits beside the [MDF boards comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/mdf-boards). HSE guidance and amazon.co.uk review notes were used, not a timed workshop trial. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

The dust is the job

HSE counts MDF dust with other wood dust. The workplace exposure limits are 3 mg/m³ for hardwood dust and 5 mg/m³ for softwood dust, as an eight-hour average. Mixtures use the 3 mg/m³ figure. Those numbers are legal limits for exposure, not a hobby allowance. For most cutting and sanding, HSE's example of suitable respiratory protection is a mask at assigned protection factor 20. FFP3 is the example they give. WIS23 says nuisance masks do not filter wood dust. Catch the dust at the tool with an M-class or H-class unit, especially in an enclosed room or when the trigger time runs to 15–30 minutes. A household vacuum with a HEPA filter is not that unit. Powered sanding of MDF can be a high-dust task. If cutting leaves you wheezy, or you get a rash, stop and get medical advice.

Thin sheet can be scored

A utility knife is a reasonable tool on about 3 mm, and it is the wrong assumption on a thick sheet. How-to sites describe several firm passes along a straightedge, then a snap, for board around 3 mm or thinner. Those pages lean on American workshop practice, so treat them as a method sketch. A Wonninek reviewer cut the stated 3 mm sheets with a knife in a couple of passes. The same notes say the dust is very fine. Keep the knife for that thin band. Packs stated at 2 mm sit in the same scoring range. A stated 6 mm sheet is already past a casual snap. AHAQU's bullet says 6 mm, and a UK reviewer measured 5.85 mm where finger joints needed the full 6 mm. Scoring will not fix a short thickness.

Thicker sheet needs a saw and support

Once the board is past the thin craft packs, use a fine-tooth saw and support the offcut so it does not tear the last few millimetres. A panel saw, a circular saw with a fine blade, or a jigsaw with a fine blade all appear in ordinary UK practice. We do not have a tested tooth count for these ASINs, so the blade choice stays with the saw maker's wood setting and a scrap cut. Hold the sheet so the offcut cannot drop. Eighteen millimetres is a different object. A full 2440 × 1220 mm sheet is heavy. One amazon.co.uk page for a single sheet states 23 kg. Buying the board pre-cut removes the dust at source. If the span needs 12–18 mm, change the board on the MDF board buying guide before you change the saw.

A laser title is not a setting

Several packs mention a laser in the title or the highlights. The UK reviews do not agree, and this page will not invent power, speed or a number of passes. On LDXDRU, one United Kingdom review says the sheets cut nicely, and another says they would not cut after many passes. On NAMYEUT, one of two UK reviews says the sheets do not cut on that person's laser. If you run a hobby laser, cut a corner you can spare. Do not scale a title up to an 18 mm sheet. When the cut is done, the raw edge is open fibre. Seal it before you judge the paint, and keep the extractor running while you sand nibs. A class M unit belongs on that sanding as much as on the saw.

Common questions

Can I cut 3 mm MDF with a knife?
Yes for a thin blank, as a scoring method rather than a guarantee. How-to write-ups describe several passes and a snap on about 3 mm or less. A UK reviewer on the Wonninek 3 mm pack did it in a couple of passes. The same notes say the dust is very fine, so a mask still belongs on the bench when you clean the edge. Do not carry that method over to a stated 6 mm sheet or to 18 mm cabinet board.
What about 6 mm or 18 mm?
Use a fine-tooth saw, support the offcut, and confirm the thickness before you cut a joint. AHAQU is stated at 6 mm and one UK review measured 5.85 mm. TSKDKIT prints both 6 mm and 2.5 cm. An 18 mm sheet of 2440 × 1220 mm is a trade board, and one single-sheet listing states 23 kg. Pre-cutting that sheet at a merchant with extraction is the safer plan in a flat. The knife method stays with the thin packs.
What mask does HSE use as the example?
HSE's example for most wood cutting and sanding is respiratory protection at assigned protection factor 20, and FFP3 is the mask they name. WIS23 says nuisance dust masks do not filter wood dust. The limit for mixed wood dust is 3 mg/m³ over eight hours. A mask does not replace extraction at the tool. If you are wheezy or you develop a rash, stop and get medical advice rather than finishing the stack.
Can I sweep MDF dust afterwards?
Leave the broom and the airline in the cupboard. HSE's WIS23 tells you to capture dust at source and to avoid dry sweeping and compressed air, because both throw wood dust back into the air. Clean up with an M-class or H-class extractor. A household vacuum fitted with a HEPA bag is not that unit. CIS69 draws the line. The same rule covers the nibs you sand before paint.
Will these Amazon packs cut on a hobby laser?
Some UK reviews say yes and some say no, so a laser word on the title is not a setting. LDXDRU's reviews split between a clean cut and a sheet that would not cut after many passes. One of NAMYEUT's two UK reviews says the laser would not cut. YourLaser's range, mostly 3 mm and 4 mm on their own machines, is not a result for these ASINs. Try a scrap corner, and do not expect an 18 mm board to behave like a 3 mm blank.
