MDF board buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You search for MDF boards and amazon.co.uk offers a £9.99 pack of three thin sheets beside the idea of a cupboard side. A craft blank here is about 30 × 40 cm or 42 × 30 cm, mostly 2 mm, 3 mm or a stated 6 mm. A trade sheet is commonly 2440 × 1220 mm, and cabinet work sits around 18 mm. This MDF board buying guide is the order to use before you sort by stars: thickness for the job, the millimetres in both size rows, then the grade for the room. The nine packs are on the [MDF boards comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/mdf-boards). Listings were read on 21 October 2026. This was not a lab test.

Two products share the name

A pack under £24 and an 8×4 sheet solve different jobs, even when both listings say MDF. The nine boards in the comparison are unfinished craft blanks. None of them is a 2440 × 1220 mm panel, and none is an 18 mm carcass side. On 21 October 2026 a separate amazon.co.uk listing, B00BEF12TS, offered five 2440 × 1220 × 18 mm sheets at £158.00, which is £31.60 a sheet. That listing is not one of the nine. If you are cutting a model or a small painted panel, stay with the comparison. If you are building a cupboard, buy a merchant sheet you can name by thickness and grade. Who should skip each craft pack is in best MDF boards.

Thickness follows the job

Choose thickness from the span and the load, then look at price. Merchant pages, seller guidance rather than a standard we tested, put about 18 mm on cabinet sides and about 12 mm on backs. MDF Direct's shelving note is 18 mm for light loads up to about 80 cm, with a thicker board or a lip when the span or the weight goes up. About 3 mm is a backing, 6 mm a light panel, and 12–18 mm and above a cabinet or shelf. None of the nine packs is an 18 mm sheet. The thickest stated figures are 6 mm, and those rows are not clean. A UK reviewer measured an AHAQU sheet at 5.85 mm where the bullet says 6 mm. TSKDKIT's bullets say 6 mm while the dimensions line says 2.5 cm. One UK reviewer stuck a canvas to a Kssvzz 2 mm sheet and it warped.

Read both size lines

A3 paper is 297 × 420 mm. A pack sold as 42 × 30 cm is 420 × 300 mm, so the short side is wider than A3 paper. A UK reviewer said the Kssvzz sheets are slightly wider than A3 and do not fit an A3 frame. The word A3 on a bullet is a seller's label. The millimetres are the size you can plan with. LDXDRU's bullets say 42 × 30 cm × 2 mm, and a dimensions line says 10 × 10 cm. AHAQU's bullet says 42 × 30 cm, the dimensions line says 42 × 29.7 cm, and a size row says A3. Kssvzz's material row says plywood while the title says MDF. DEAYOU's title says medium-density fibreboard and chipboard, and the material row says poplar. If a frame or a jig needs one rectangle, measure the sheet when it arrives.

Grade and E1 are not the same dial

A thicker sheet does not choose the room. Standard MDF is for dry interiors. Moisture-resistant board, MDF.H in EN 622-5, is for humid interiors and is often dyed green so you can see the core. Paint on a standard blank does not turn that blank into MDF.H. None of the nine listings says moisture-resistant. A kitchen, bathroom or utility room belongs on moisture-resistant MDF. E1 is an emissions class, not a room certificate. FIRA describes the older E1 figure as up to 0.124 mg/m³. A tighter EU article limit of 0.062 mg/m³ is not automatically Great Britain REACH. It matters on the EU market and in Northern Ireland. Only AHAQU's bullet claims E1, with no certificate on the captured page. None of these craft listings has a declaration of performance under EN 13986. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Common questions

What thickness of MDF do I need?
Match the thickness to the job, using merchant bands as guidance rather than a test we ran. About 3 mm suits a backing, about 6 mm a light panel, and about 12–18 mm a cabinet side or a light shelf up to roughly 80 cm. Heavier spans want a thicker board or a lip. The nine amazon.co.uk packs stop at a stated 6 mm, and one UK review measured 5.85 mm on a sheet sold as 6 mm. A cupboard side is a trade sheet, not one of these packs.
Is 18 mm the board for a cupboard?
UK merchant guidance, including MDF Direct, treats 18 mm as the usual cabinet side and 12 mm as a more typical back. That is seller practice, not a span table from this comparison. On 21 October 2026, amazon.co.uk listing B00BEF12TS showed five 2440 × 1220 × 18 mm sheets at £158.00, or £31.60 each. None of the nine craft packs is 18 mm. If the cupboard is in a humid room, thickness alone still leaves the grade to choose.
Does A3 on an MDF board mean 297 by 420 mm?
A3 paper is 297 × 420 mm. Packs listed as 42 × 30 cm are 420 × 300 mm, which is wider than that paper on the short side. A UK reviewer said the Kssvzz sheets do not fit an A3 frame. Read the centimetre lines, including a dimensions row that may disagree with the bullet. If the frame is a true A3, measure the sheet or buy a board cut to 297 × 420 mm.
What is E1, and which packs state it?
E1 is an emissions class. FIRA describes it as up to 0.124 mg/m³. The EU article limit of 0.062 mg/m³ is a separate rule and is not automatically Great Britain REACH, though it matters in Northern Ireland and on the EU market. In this set only AHAQU's bullet says E1, with no certificate and no test report on the captured page. We do not treat that bullet as documented E1. A declaration of performance under EN 13986 is what you ask a merchant for on building work.
When do I need moisture-resistant board instead of a thicker sheet?
You need the grade when the room is humid, not when the shelf is long. Standard MDF is a dry-interior board. MDF.H is the moisture-resistant grade for humid interiors, and it is still not a board for standing water. Extra millimetres on a standard craft pack do not change that. None of the nine listings states the grade. Keep 18 mm for the structural choice, and choose the grade before you paint a bathroom panel.
