The best road salt bags, compared.
Top pick: Darlies brown de-icing salt, 23 kg Best value: Peacock white de-icing salt, 10 kg – Lowest qualifying sack price at about £8.95, with BS 3247:2011 printed and 4.4 from 1,523 reviews. Updated 23 October 2026.
Road salt is sodium chloride in a bag. In the UK you buy it to melt ice, or to stop ice bonding, on a drive, a path, a yard or a set of steps. A public road stays with the highway authority. The same crystals are often sold as a weed treatment, so the title can say weed killer while the bag is still salt. You tell a suitable bag by the job printed on the title, the colour and the dirt it leaves, the weight you can lift, and whether the listing says it conforms to BS 3247. White salt and brown salt both lower the freezing point of water. Brown mined salt carries more dirt. White salt is the bag sold where residue would be walked indoors. Sand and ash give grip on ice. A line that mentions pets leaves the chemistry unchanged. Salt in a council bin stays in that bin. How to read the title, the colour and the weight is set out in the [road salt buying guide](/hub/diy-supplies/road-salt/sub/road-salt-buying-guide).

Question 1 of 2
Where are you spreading it?
UK buyers say this Darlies brown salt melts ice quickly, and they also call it messy if it is trodden indoors. The title is de-icing for ice and snow, £17.99, with 4.6 from 787 amazon.co.uk reviews, the larger of the two 4.6 files in this set. The title says 23 kg and the dimensions line says 25 kg, so about £0.78/kg only if you use the title weight. One bag was 2 to 3 kg light and the buyer received a partial refund. Reviews also use it as a homemade weed treatment. There is no BS 3247 line and no pet-friendly bullet. It ties the Peacock 20 kg bag on stars, so it is not marked as the single top pick. The 30 x 20 x 10 cm cell is not a credible size for a sack this heavy.
Pros
Cons
Best for: A drive or yard where brown residue is acceptable and you want the larger de-icing review file in this set.
Less suitable: A doorway you will walk through in shoes, or anyone who needs BS 3247 printed and one agreed bag weight.
Specifications
Common questions
Does this listing print a BS 3247 line?
No. The title and bullets describe brown de-icing salt and do not mention BS 3247.
Does the listing say it is pet friendly?
No. Pet friendly and residue are unanswered questions. Reviews say it is messy if it is trodden indoors.
Is the bag 23 kg or 25 kg?
The title says 23 kg. The product-dimensions line says 25 kg. One reviewer found a bag 2 to 3 kg light and received a partial refund.
This Peacock white bag is £15.80 for a 20 kg title, about £0.79/kg, with 4.6 from 310 amazon.co.uk reviews and a printed BS 3247:2011 line. That star line ties the Darlies brown 23 kg bag, which has 787 reviews, so neither listing is marked as the single top pick. Buyers confirm white rock salt and use it on monoblock weeds and on ice. One buyer spread a quarter of the bag on 5 square metres, about a kilogram per square metre, which is overspreading rather than a target rate. One bag was wet inside. There is no item-weight line and no part number on the technical block. The listing excludes lawns and ground you want to plant, and pet friendly is unanswered.
Pros
Cons
Best for: A drive where you want white salt, a printed BS 3247 line, and a 20 kg sack rather than 10 kg or 25 kg.
Less suitable: Anyone who reads 4.6 as a unique winner, or who needs a technical weight that is actually printed.
Specifications
Common questions
Does this listing print a BS 3247 line?
Yes. A bullet says it conforms to BS 3247:2011.
Does the listing say it is pet friendly?
No. The bullet excludes lawns and areas you want to plant. Pet friendly is an unanswered question.
How heavy is one dose in the reviews?
One buyer says a quarter of the 20 kg bag covered 5 square metres. That is their spread, not a recommended rate.
This Munnie white bag is a de-icing title for ice, snow, and weed control, 10 kg at £10.95, about £1.10/kg. The star line is 4.6 from 78 amazon.co.uk reviews, which sits under the 100-review line used for badges here, so it is not marked as the top pick. A small UK file says ice cleared, including after a grit bin was removed, and that the salt was hard to spread evenly. One buyer with a lot of hard landscaping says the 10 kg bag only just did the paths. A bullet says it improves safety for families, pets, visitors, and employees. Pet friendly is still an unanswered question, and the bullet is not a test. One buyer says not to use it where you plan to grow plants. There is no BS 3247 line and no item-weight line. It was first available on 22 September 2025.
Pros
Cons
Best for: A short path where you want a white 10 kg de-icing title and can accept a review file of 78.
Less suitable: Anyone who needs a printed BS 3247 line, a large review sample, or a bag that states its weight twice.
Specifications
Common questions
Does this listing print a BS 3247 line?
No. The title is a white de-icer and the bullets do not mention BS 3247.
Does the listing say it is pet friendly?
A bullet says it improves safety for families, pets, visitors, and employees. Pet friendly is still an unanswered question on the page. The bullet is not a test.
How far does 10 kg go in the reviews?
One buyer with a lot of hard landscaping says the 10 kg bag only just did the paths, and that it was hard to spread evenly.
The title says 10 kg of white Laeto weed-killer salt at £11.99, about £1.20/kg on that title, while the item-weight line prints 9.95 kg. The star line is 4.5 from 1,918 amazon.co.uk reviews, and the opening review matches the other white Laeto listings. You should not treat that count as a test of this 10 kg bag alone. A bullet says it is safe around animals when applied as directed. That is listing copy, not a test. There is no BS 3247 line and no method for spreading. The shared file includes a soggy bag and a white order that arrived brown. Dimensions are given as 41.1 x 33 x 9.1 cm, which is a small carton next to a 25 kg sack.
Pros
Cons
Best for: A small white bag sold as a patio weed treatment, if you accept that the star count is shared.
Less suitable: Anyone who needs the weight lines to agree, a de-icing title, or a review sample that belongs only to this ASIN.

Common questions
Does this listing print a BS 3247 line?
No. The title is a weed killer and the bullets do not mention BS 3247.
Does the listing say it is pet friendly?
Yes, as a bullet: safe around animals when applied as directed. That is listing copy, not a test.
Is the bag 10 kg?
The title and size line say 10 kg. The item-weight line says 9.95 kg.
This white Laeto bag is a weed killer for a driveway and patio, 15 kg at £13.99, about £0.93/kg. The star line is 4.5 from 1,918 amazon.co.uk reviews, the same count as the 10 kg white Laeto listing, and the file repeats those reviews, including one dated 5 September 2026. The bag was first available on 9 October 2025, so that shared history cannot be a separate test of this size. A bullet says it is safe around animals when applied as directed. That is not a test. There is no BS 3247 line and no spreading method. The best-sellers rank line matches the 10 kg white bag. You are buying a mid-weight weed-killer title, not a highways specification.
Pros
Cons
Best for: A buyer who wants a 15 kg white bag sold as a patio weed treatment and will ignore the shared star count.
Less suitable: Anyone who needs a de-icing title, BS 3247 printed, or reviews that started after this listing appeared.

Common questions
Does this listing print a BS 3247 line?
No. The title is a weed killer and the bullets do not mention BS 3247.
Does the listing say it is pet friendly?
Yes, as a bullet: safe around animals when applied as directed. That line is not a test.
Are these reviews of the 15 kg bag?
The opening review matches the other white Laeto listings. The star count 1,918 matches the 10 kg white bag. Do not treat it as a separate sample.
The title is a weed killer for a driveway and patio, white on the spec line, 20 kg at £17.99, about £0.90/kg. The star line is 4.5 from 1,917 amazon.co.uk reviews, but the review block matches the other white Laeto bags, so this is not a separate test of the 20 kg sack. Themes in that shared file are weeds, ice on a drive, a soggy bag, and a white order that arrived brown. A bullet says it is safe around animals when applied as directed. That is listing copy, not a test. There is no BS 3247 line and no spreading method. The power-source field prints ac_dc, which does not describe a bag of salt. Treat the count as one Laeto white file repeated across sizes, not as 1,917 reviews of this bag alone.
Pros
Cons
Best for: Someone who wants a 20 kg white bag sold as a driveway weed treatment and will not treat the star count as unique to this size.
Less suitable: A buyer who needs a de-icing title, a printed BS 3247 line, or an independent review sample.

Common questions
Does this listing print a BS 3247 line?
No. The title is a weed killer. The bullets do not mention BS 3247.
Does the listing say it is pet friendly?
Yes, as a bullet: safe for use around animals when applied as directed. That line is not a test result.
Are the 1,917 reviews only about this 20 kg bag?
No. The same opening review and the same themes appear on the Laeto white 10 kg and 15 kg listings.
UK buyers describe this Zoutman sack as white salt with little residue, used on ice and on block-paving weeds, at £16.90 for a 25 kg title, about £0.68/kg, with 4.5 from 350 amazon.co.uk reviews. The spec table does not print a colour, so white is a review description rather than a listing field. The title is de-icing for roads and paths. Driveways are an unanswered question. One bag weighed 20.7 kg. One box carried biohazard warnings. There is no BS 3247 line, no pet-friendly bullet, and no spreading method, though the bullets mention varying crystal size. A buyer believes white salt does not damage concrete. The listing does not say that. You get a low price per kilogram and a de-icing title, with the colour left to the reviews.
Pros
Cons
Best for: A household that can lift 25 kg and wants a cheap-per-kilogram de-icing title, accepting that colour is only in the reviews.
Less suitable: Anyone who needs colour, BS 3247, or a driveway claim printed on the listing itself.
Specifications
Common questions
Does this listing print a BS 3247 line?
No. The bullets say de-icing salt for roads and paths, dry free-flowing crystals, and a 25 kg bag. They do not mention BS 3247.
Does the listing say it is pet friendly?
No. The page does not print a pet-friendly bullet. Driveways and smaller bags are unanswered questions.
What colour is it?
The spec table does not print a colour. Reviews describe it as white salt without much sand. One buyer believes white salt does not damage concrete. The listing does not say that.
This is the best value bag in the set on the rule used here: the lowest shelf price among listings with at least 100 reviews and a star line of at least 4.0. It is Peacock white de-icing salt, 10 kg at £8.95, about £0.90/kg, with 4.4 from 1,523 amazon.co.uk reviews and a bullet that says it conforms to BS 3247:2011. UK buyers use it on weeds in gravel and on icy steps. A bullet says the size suits topping up a grit bin. The bag is not itself a bin, and that line is not permission to take salt from a council bin. Packaging was damaged for one buyer, one buyer says it did not work on weeds, and some salt arrived moist. Pet friendly is an unanswered question. The two £16.90 sacks are cheaper per kilogram if you can lift 25 kg.
Pros
Cons
Best for: A short path or a grit-bin top-up where you want a printed BS 3247 line and the lowest qualifying sack price in this set.
Less suitable: A yard that needs one heavy sack, or anyone comparing price per kilogram rather than the price of the bag.
Specifications
Common questions
Does this listing print a BS 3247 line?
Yes. A bullet says it conforms to BS 3247:2011.
Does the listing say it is pet friendly?
No. Pet friendly is an unanswered question on the page.
Is this a grit bin?
No. It is a 10 kg bag. A bullet says the bag size is suitable for topping up grit bins.
This Peacock white sack is the dearest bag in the set at £19.75 for a 25 kg title, about £0.79/kg, and a bullet says it conforms to BS 3247:2011. Across 365 amazon.co.uk reviews, most comments are about weeds on drives rather than a timed ice test. One buyer says the salt was not Peacock, and others say crystals get tracked into the kitchen. The technical block prints an item weight of 200 g and dimensions of 20 x 50 x 80 cm against that 25 kg title, so the weight row is not usable. A review still calls the bag 25 kg, which matches the title rather than the 200 g line. The listing says it is not for lawns or ground you want to plant, and pet friendly is unanswered. You are paying for the printed standard and the large sack, not for a clean technical sheet.
Pros
Cons
Best for: A buyer who wants the BS 3247 line on a 25 kg white de-icing title and will ignore the 200 g weight row.
Less suitable: Anyone who needs the technical weight to match the sack, or who wants the lowest price per kilogram.

Common questions
Does this listing print a BS 3247 line?
Yes. A bullet says it conforms to BS 3247:2011, the British Standard for de-icing salt.
Does the listing say it is pet friendly?
No. The bullet says it is not for lawns or areas you want to plant. Pet friendly is an unanswered question.
Why do the weights disagree?
The title says 25 kg. Technical details print an item weight of 200 g and dimensions of 20 x 50 x 80 cm. A review also calls the bag 25 kg.
This brown Laeto bag is titled as a weed killer, 20 kg at £16.99, about £0.85/kg, while the bullets also claim de-icing. The star line is 4.4 from 310 amazon.co.uk reviews, and the text is shared with the 10 kg brown Laeto bag. That shared file includes a reflux-gel review that is not about salt, so the count is not a clean sample of this sack. Themes that do belong are weeds and a wet bag. A review says the salt kills the soil as well as the weeds. There is no BS 3247 line and no pet-friendly bullet. The page says some products cannot be delivered outside mainland UK, and that this is confirmed only after you enter an address.
Pros
Cons
Best for: A yard where brown residue is acceptable and you want a 20 kg bag whose bullets mention de-icing as well as weeds.
Less suitable: A doorway, a lawn, or anyone who needs BS 3247 printed and a review file that belongs only to this bag.

Common questions
Does this listing print a BS 3247 line?
No. The bullets describe brown salt for de-icing and the title is a weed killer. Neither prints BS 3247.
Does the listing say it is pet friendly?
No. Pet friendly is an unanswered question. A review says the salt kills the soil as well as the weeds.
Can this bag be delivered everywhere in the UK?
The page says some products cannot be delivered outside mainland UK, and that this is confirmed only after you enter an address.
This brown Laeto bag is titled as a weed killer, 10 kg at £11.99, about £1.20/kg, and a bullet also calls it path salt you can spread by hand or with a spreader. The star line is 4.3 from 311 amazon.co.uk reviews, and the block matches the 20 kg brown Laeto bag, including a reflux-gel review that is not about salt. There is no BS 3247 line and no pet-friendly bullet. Bullets describe fine granules and a compact bag. A review in the shared file says the salt kills the soil as well as the weeds. It is the lighter brown sack if you want that colour without lifting 20 kg. The star count is not a separate test of this 10 kg listing, which was first available on 18 September 2024.
Pros
Cons
Best for: A short path where brown salt is acceptable and you want a 10 kg bag whose bullets mention spreading.
Less suitable: A buyer who needs a de-icing title, BS 3247 printed, or a review file that is only about this ASIN.

Common questions
Does this listing print a BS 3247 line?
No. The title is a weed killer. A bullet mentions path salt. Neither prints BS 3247.
Does the listing say it is pet friendly?
No. Pet friendly is an unanswered question.
Are the 311 reviews only about this 10 kg bag?
No. The opening review and the theme counts match the Laeto brown 20 kg listing.
Across 512 amazon.co.uk reviews, buyers use this Darlies white bag on frost, snow, and weeds, at £16.90 for the 25 kg title, about £0.68/kg. The title is a de-icing claim for ice and snow, so the winter job is printed even though many comments also treat it as a weed treatment. There is no BS 3247 line, so you cannot read it as a highway specification. One reviewer found a bag about 20% light, and the seller then resolved it. A courier left heavy sacks at the wrong address, which is a real problem when each bag is a 25 kg lift. Pet friendly is an unanswered question, and one review says salt on grass kills the grass. The title and the weight block do not fight each other, which is cleaner than some other rows in this set.
Pros
Cons
Best for: A household that can lift 25 kg and wants a white de-icing title at the low price per kilogram in this set.
Less suitable: Anyone who needs a printed BS 3247 line, a 10 kg bag, or a listing that answers the pet question.
Specifications
Common questions
Does this listing print a BS 3247 line?
No. The title is white de-icing rock salt for ice and snow, and the bullets do not mention BS 3247.
Does the listing say it is pet friendly?
No. Pet friendly is a question on the page with no seller answer. One review says salt on grass kills the grass.
Is the bag weight consistent?
The title says 25 kg. There is no separate item-weight line. One reviewer was about 20% short, and the seller then resolved it.
The figure beside each bag is the amazon.co.uk star line times 20, so 4.6 becomes 92. It is not a laboratory melt test, and it is not a sum of the checks below. No bag is marked as the top pick. Darlies brown, titled 23 kg, is 4.6 from 787 reviews, and Peacock white 20 kg is 4.6 from 310. The star line ties, and Munnie at 4.6 from 78 sits under the 100-review line used for that badge. Best value is the lowest shelf price among bags with at least 100 reviews and a star line of at least 4.0. That is the Peacock white 10 kg bag at about £8.95. The two bags at about £16.90 are cheaper per kilogram. Shared Laeto review text is shown because it is on the listing. It is not a separate test of each size.
Star line
40%The figure on each bag is the amazon.co.uk star line times 20. A 4.6 becomes 92. A tie at 4.6 with at least 100 reviews is why there is no top pick.
Review sample
20%Badges use a line of at least 100 reviews. Munnie’s 78 sits under it. A shared Laeto file is one sample, repeated across sizes.
Sack price
20%Best value uses the shelf price of the bag, not the price per kilogram. The two bags at about £16.90 are cheaper per kilogram and are not the award.
Job and standard line
10%A de-icing title can be held to winter use. Only a printed BS 3247 line is treated as that claim. A house drive sits outside a highway specification.
Listing conflicts
10%A weight row that fights the title, or a colour that appears only in reviews, is read as a conflict. It is not a second specification.
You are choosing a bag of sodium chloride for a path, a drive, steps or a yard. These twelve amazon.co.uk listings are not one product: white and brown bags, 10 kg to 25 kg, de-icing titles and weed-killer titles. Shelf prices run from about £8.95 to about £19.75. There is no top pick, because two bags tie at 4.6 with at least 100 reviews. Best value is the Peacock white 10 kg bag at about £8.95, which also prints BS 3247:2011.
Road salt here is sodium chloride in a bag, sold to melt ice or to stop it bonding on a drive, a path, a yard or steps. Household bags are rock salt or a white de-icing salt. Brown grit usually means that rock salt. Sharp sand is a different product. Sand and ash add grip on ice. Melting is what the salt is for. Acetate and urea de-icers sit outside this set. The job on the title is the first check. De-icing, ice or snow is a winter claim you can hold the seller to.
Salt works better before ice packs hard. Compacted ice is hard to treat, and GOV.UK says to leave water off it. Clear early. A heavy scatter, around a kilogram per square metre in one review, is over-spreading.
GOV.UK says council grit bins stay as they are. A 10 kg bag sold for topping up a bin is a bag you bought. It is not permission to take salt from the highway authority.
A pet-friendly bullet is listing copy. RSPCA advice is to wipe paws and to call a vet if a pet eats the salt. A weed-only title has not promised a de-icing specification, and a shared Laeto review file is not a separate test of each size.
The first check is the job on the title. De-icing, ice or snow is a winter claim you can hold the seller to. A weed-only title is still rock salt, and it has not promised a highways specification. BS 3247:2011+A1:2016 is the British Standard for salt spread on highways: storage, moisture, grading, composition and marking. BSI says salt works better before ice packs hard. A house drive sits outside that highway job.
Bag weight decides whether you can lift the sack and what you pay for it. In these twelve amazon.co.uk captures, 10 kg bags are about £8.95 to about £11.99, bags of 15–23 kg are about £13.99 to about £17.99, and 25 kg bags are about £16.90 or about £19.75. About £0.68 per kilogram, on the two bags at about £16.90, is the low end of this set. Those bands are these listings only.
Three typical situations, each with a recommendation from this comparison.
You want a bag you can lift, a de-icing title and a printed BS 3247 line. Peacock white 10 kg is best value at about £8.95, with 4.4 from 1,523 reviews. The bullet says the size suits topping up a bin you already own. Council grit stays in the council bin.
Darlies brown salt is titled for ice and snow, 23 kg at about £17.99, with 4.6 from 787 reviews, the larger of the two 4.6 files. Reviews say it melts ice and that it is messy indoors. The title says 23 kg and the dimensions line says 25 kg. There is no BS 3247 line.
Employers grit early evening or early morning, on the HSE timing. A pet-friendly bullet is not the plan. Peacock white 20 kg prints BS 3247:2011 on a de-icing title, at about £15.80, with 4.6 from 310 reviews. A public road stays with the highway authority.
There is no top pick in this set. Darlies brown salt, titled 23 kg, is 4.6 from 787 amazon.co.uk reviews, and Peacock white 20 kg is 4.6 from 310. The star line ties, and Munnie at 4.6 from 78 sits under the 100-review line, so the two larger 4.6 files stay level. Best value is Peacock white de-icing salt, 10 kg, at about £8.95: the lowest shelf price among bags with at least 100 reviews and a star line of at least 4.0, with 4.4 from 1,523 reviews and BS 3247:2011 printed. The two sacks at about £16.90 are cheaper per kilogram if you can lift 25 kg. Scores are the star line times 20. This is not a laboratory melt test.
Peacock white de-icing salt, 10 kg
Lowest qualifying sack price at about £8.95, with BS 3247:2011 printed and 4.4 from 1,523 reviews.
